Book excerpt: In praise of Charlie D. "Falloon's eloquent explication of the life of the legendary Charlie D delivers a good read while exposing that most under-publicized commodity of them all-a mega-trader with a low public profile whose superhuman trading abilities were exceeded by only one thing-the extended reach of his heart and soul." -Patrick H. Arbor Chairman, Chicago Board of Trade "Charlie D. is a tribute to the entrepreneurial spirit of Charlie D, whose legend still lives today on our trading floors. It also captures the essence of the men and women of Chicago who, working in a unique environment, through their trading provide economic benefits around the world." -Thomas R. Donovan President and Chief Executive Officer Chicago Board of Trade "Charlie D was unique-a poker-faced, unemotional, swashbuckling trader every other trader seeks to emulate. At the same time, he was also a model of trading integrity and one of the most generous people I have ever known. Whether trading or gambling, vacationing with family or go lfing with superstars, he did everything with a special flair and spirit. Charlie was truly larger than life." -Thomas DeMark Author of The New Science of Technical Analysis and New Market Timing Techniques "Falloon captures the essence of the Charlie D I knew and rekindles my memories of a larger-than-life individual-how he laughed in the face of cancer, his generosity, and his sense of humor." -Mike Manning Rand Financial Services, Inc. "Charlie D was the most dynamic trader I've ever seen in my nineteen years in this business, and, beyond that, the best human being I've known." -Tom Fitzgerald TPF Trading

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I joined the teachers’ revolution of the 60s, expecting to work for a just and honored profession. Colliding symbiotic values fomented into the experiences that defined my future. The established order asked us to comply and compromise. Idealism required us to accommodate pragmatism while never compromising our passion for justice. Mine is a story about choices. Choices that took me from school teacher to teacher advocate, from the teachings of John Calvin to the philosophy of Baruch Spinoza, from conservative to the progressive/left. A path guided by inculcated values, influenced by social and political events, molded by mentors and interrupted by tragedy. Along the way I met great teachers, organizers, philosophers, policy makers, writers, and presidents. Born into a conservative rural, Iowa family, I was inspired by Bobby Kennedy’s promise of withdrawal from Viet Nam and his passion to fulfill Martin Luther King’s vision of a just society. But Bobby was gone and with him much of the hope he had inspired. Flying away from my safe, predictable life as a teacher near Lake Okoboji, I hoped to embrace a new life as an organizer. Today, as I reflect on life’s lessons, I believe that justice, mercy, and humility should guide the organizer’s mantra: “Educate, Agitate, Organize.”

Book excerpt: Singular and star-studded writings on America’s neon-lit playground At once a Technicolor wonderland and the embodiment of American mythology, Las Vegas exists at the Ground Zero of a reverence for risk-taking and the transformative power of a winning hand. Jake Johnson edits a collection of short essays and flash ideas that probes how music-making and soundscapes shape the City of Second Chances. Treating topics ranging from Cher to Cirque de Soleil, the contributors delve into how music and musicians factored in the early development of Vegas’s image; the role of local communities of musicians and Strip mainstays in sustaining tensions between belief and disbelief; the ways aging showroom stars provide a sense of timelessness that inoculates visitors against the outside world; the link connecting fantasies of sexual prowess and democracy with the musical values of Liberace and others; considerations of how musicians and establishments gambled with identity and opened the door for audience members to explore Sin City–only versions of themselves; and the echoes and energy generated by the idea of Las Vegas as it travels across the country. Contributors: Celine Ayala, Kirstin Bews, Laura Dallman, Joanna Dee Das, James Deaville, Robert Fink, Pheaross Graham, Jessica A. Holmes, Maddie House-Tuck, Jake Johnson, Kelly Kessler, Michael Kinney, Carlo Lanfossi, Jason Leddington, Janis McKay, Sam Murray, Louis Niebur, Lynda Paul, Arianne Johnson Quinn, Michael M.
