Book excerpt: Excerpt from How to Join the Circus and Gymnasium: The Celebrated Circus and Pantomime Clown The first circus in the United States was run in 1780 by a man named Rickets. Definite information as to its or ganization is now of course unattainable, but if reproduced at this day, and put in contrast with the enormous circuses now competing for public favor, it would doubtless be con sidered a very small affair. Such as it was, however, Gen. Washington and his staff patronized its performances in Philadelphia, and it was deemed quite a high-toned'amuse ment for that city in 1780. Two or three years later a Frenchman named Boschard was associated in management with Rickets, and when the latter died the enterprising Gaul for some time had the business all to himself. His success encouraged rivals, and several circus companies Sprang up during the latter part of the last and the begin ning of the present century. It IS very doubtful, however. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For some, the connection between Jews and athletics might seem far-fetched. But in fact, as is highlighted by the fourteen chapters in this collection, Jews have been participating in-and thinking about-sports for more than two thousand years. The articles in this volume scan a wide chronological range: from the Hellenistic period (first century BCE) to the most recent basketball season. The range of athletes covered is equally broad: from participants in Roman-style games to wrestlers, boxers, fencers, baseball players, and basketball stars. The authors of these essays, many of whom actively participate in athletics themselves, raise a number of intriguing questions, such as: What differing attitudes toward sports have Jews exhibited across periods and cultures? Is it possible to be a "good Jew" and a "great athlete"? In what sports have Jews excelled, and why? How have Jews overcome prejudices on the part of the general populace against a Jewish presence on the field or in the ring? In what ways has Jewish participation in sports aided, or failed to aid, the perception of Jews as "good Germans," "good Hungarians," "good Americans," and so forth? This volume, which features a number of illustrations (many of them quite rare), is not only accessible to the general reader, but also contains much information of interest to the scholar in Jewish studies, American studies, and sports history.

Book excerpt: This collective volume contributes to a growing debate concerning the extent to which we are now living in a global society shaped by sport in addition to economy, technology and so on. It covers 36 countries from five continents, analyzed by 87 contributors, so it offers a large comparative study. It is also a data bank of national information resources for students, researchers, policy-makers, sports leaders and managers. By means of a standard framework used in all chapters, the collected data from national cases on history, management and culture of sport provide interpretations of marketing, sponsorship, finance, target groups, settings for activities, strategy of promotion and social changes as related to Sport for All. This cross-national approach seeks to offer adequate meaning to the practices of each country, stimulating further research on specific themes of physical activities for health and leisure, either in affluent or poor social conditions. The concluding chapter lays the groundwork of Sport for All.
