This product will have to be small, lightweight, aerodynamic, and modular. It will only have to rely on 1 channel input from the aircraft receiver for the RC/Autopilot switching function. It will have to be able to fly a predetermined route while having the ability for the consumer to override the autopilot feature if desired by using their remote control. Our RC aircraft autopilot system will be interfaced with a computer in order to program the way-points that will make up the flight plan. All of these objectives are critical in order to have a functional RC aircraft autopilot system. Our time frame for completion of this project is 32 weeks and our target for total cost for the build is $500. The product that we are proposing is a GPS-Guided Autopilot System designed for radio-controlled aircraft. This project is a modular RC/Autopilot Aircraft System that will be designed for small, inexpensive, and basic radio controlled unmanned aerial vehicles. Although our target market will be RC hobbyists that are interested in flying their airplanes autonomously, our system will also have the potential to expand to larger markets such as hobbyists flying helicopters as well as Unmanned Aerial Vehicles used in the military. There will be three phases to this project, Phase (1) is our goal and is dedicated as the Autopilot function once the aircraft has reached altitude. Phase (2) is the addition of Autopilot landing, and Phase (3) is the addition of Autopilot takeoff. Phases (2) and (3) are left as optional and will be completed if and only if the team has enough time before the end of the series of Senior Project courses. The project can be broken down into three basic modules to perform these tasks. These modules are the Sensing module, the Receiver/Processor module, and a flight Control module. The combination of these three modules will be assembled to form the autopilot function. The Sensing module will consist of a GPS antenna and a signal processor along with a 2-axis gyroscope and a 3-axis accelerometer. The GPS signal from satellites will be processed into information that will be used by the receiver/processor module to send flight path corrections to the flight control module to keep the aircraft on the programmed path. The flight controls affected by the GPS signals will be the engine speed and the rudder.

This section covers documents types such as the variously; Aircraft Equipment List, Weight and Balance document, FAA Form 337 for record major alterations and the Approved Flight Manual. This section describes what approved data that can be used to alter an aircraft and how that record information be included in the FAA Form 337 is. Section 5 Aircraft Fundamentals This section is designed to cover the basic of aircraft construction and operations. The reason for this section to help provide an understanding how an Autopilot system interfaces with the parts of the aircraft structure. An autopilot system will need to mimic the actions and controls of the pilot and technicians will need to understand what the system is doing. Section 6 Introduction to Autopilots This section covers the history of autopilots in aircraft and what they are expected to do for the pilots. First describing the three basic channels and the systems and control they move. Then the individual controls and components are covered to include how those components connect to the aircraft systems. Section 7 Testing the Autopilot This part the book is designed to correspond with the Autopilot Installers part of the course. At the lab section of this course, the student is expected to install and test a basic general aviation autopilot system. This section goes over how the specific systems operate and how the technician is to test and certify the new installation. Section 8 Air Carrier Auto Flight Systems This section covers more advanced autopilot systems that can be found in large air carrier aircraft. Starting with the analog Boeing 727 system students will learn how to turn on, engage and test a large aircraft autopilot system in all its various modes. Section 9 Flight Director Systems This section covers the system that assists pilot with visual cues when flying an aircraft. Starting with the Attitude Director Indicator to the FMS Mode Annunciation panel technicians will understand how the information is presented to the pilot and how to simulate the inputs to test the system. The International Aerial Robotics Competition (IARC) challenges teams to develop autonomous platforms to accomplish missions with problems not previously solved. The Pennsylvania UAV Research Lab (PURL) is competing in IARC's Mission 9, which partially requires high-speed flight with a large payload. The SIG Rascal 168, a radio-controlled aircraft with conventional gear, is the chosen platform and has motivated the model development and controller design presented in this work. The typical control challenges of this tailwheel aircraft, intensified by the added payload, make this vehicle a useful flight-test platform. This thesis presents the integration of the aircraft model into a previously developed flight simulation environment that uses a neural network-based adaptive flight controller to refine flight characteristics during specific mission phases, including take-off and landing. The resulting autopilot design is evaluated in simulation and prepared to be incorporated with the necessary hardware onboard Rascal 168.

Linear and nonlinear aircraft models and system identification of the aircraft system were developed to design flight control laws. Proportional-integral-derivative control laws as well as fuzzy logic supervisory control for fixed wing autopilots in cruise mode were developed. Hardware in the loop for UAV flight simulation was also developed. The current work focuses on designing control laws for takeoff, cruise, and landing, and conducting flight test verification of these law. Implementation of control laws for different flight modes need further study in switching between flight modes. A hybrid control scheme, which acts as a supervisory control for coordinating the conventional control laws for each flight mode is proposed. This involves the usage of a state-machine block to coordinate the transition of each of the flight modes. A way of using fuzzy logic control to map the gain values for different flight equilibrium states is developed and simulated in this work. The contributions of this thesis are the development of digital flight control system software and hardware"--Abstract.
