This book was released on 2019-02-27 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'A concise guide to early-stage innovation which will be valuable to everyone making the transition from individual scientist or engineer to a role in achieving innovation by an organization.'This transition is often harder than is recognized. The target audience has typically reached the top of an educational ladder, and moves, with a first job, to an organization with different norms, objectives and understanding of innovation. Relevant organizations are wide-ranging, and include companies, governments (local or national), government agencies and educational institutions. The primary purpose of this book is to provide a useful resource for those making the above transition. It may also be of value to people interacting with innovative scientists and technologists from other perspectives, for example from those in funding, commercial or managerial roles. The book has three areas of focus. Firstly, on early-stage innovation, covering the journey from idea to proof-of-concept. Here the factors involved are common across many different areas. Secondly, on the needs of scientists and technologists, and thirdly on innovation by organizations. The contents cover key ideas in innovation, processes for stimulating and managing early-stage innovation, open innovation, and behaviors and communications which support innovation. Conceptual frameworks are described, as well as practical examples. A set of case studies is included, and extensive references are provided. A concluding chapter discusses developments in the management of innovation. The content has been shaped by the author's experience in giving many interactive courses on managing early stage innovation to scientists and engineers, which has given insights into needs; the style is shaped by the author's track record in scientific publications and lecturing. The focus, content and style will make the book more accessible and attractive to the target readership than related books on the market, and will benefit the target readership by enabling them to become more effective in roles involving innovation.

Book excerpt: There are fewer grounds today than in the past to deplore a North‑South divide in research and innovation. This is one of the key findings of the UNESCO Science Report: towards 2030. A large number of countries are now incorporating science, technology and innovation in their national development agenda, in order to make their economies less reliant on raw materials and more rooted in knowledge. Most research and development (R&D) is taking place in high-income countries, but innovation of some kind is now occurring across the full spectrum of income levels according to the first survey of manufacturing companies in 65 countries conducted by the UNESCO Institute for Statistics and summarized in this report. For many lower-income countries, sustainable development has become an integral part of their national development plans for the next 10–20 years. Among higher-income countries, a firm commitment to sustainable development is often coupled with the desire to maintain competitiveness in global markets that are increasingly leaning towards ‘green’ technologies. The quest for clean energy and greater energy efficiency now figures among the research priorities of numerous countries. Written by more than 50 experts who are each covering the country or region from which they hail, the UNESCO Science Report: towards 2030 provides more country-level information than ever before. The trends and developments in science, technology and innovation policy and governance between 2009 and mid-2015 described here provide essential baseline information on the concerns and priorities of countries that could orient the implementation and drive the assessment of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development in the years to come.

In this book, twelve “valleys of death” are identified which, following a linear approach, correspond to the various obstacles that limit the various passages from an original idea to invention, and then to industrial innovation. These various limiting factors have a variety of origins: disciplined scientific training, weak general and scientific culture, New Public Management, hierarchical support, funding, evaluation, proof of concepts, complexity management, and heuristic and interdisciplinary approaches on the one hand, and attractiveness for the new on the other. After an idea is formulated, these contexts bring small elements of science into play, but above all human aspects ranging from motivation and the quality of exchanges to responsibility. In short, it is a possible dynamic way of living together to promote innovations stemming from science. This is not easy, but if the invention is profitable for society, the downstream sector can greatly facilitate the various stages of commercialization.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nandan Nilekani earned his place as an iconic entrepreneur in India in the 1980s, having co-founded Infosys Limited in 1981. In the post-economic liberalisation era, he cemented his reputation as a pioneer in the corporate and information technology world, just as he helped launch Infosys into the big league of world’s IT-enabled services companies. He served as the company’s Chief Executive Officer from 2001 to 2007. At the fag end of his career in Infosys, Nilekani wrote a best-selling book in 2009, Imagining India: the Idea of a Nation Renewed. The book is widely acclaimed for heralding a new, idea-based approach to meet the present and future challenges facing India. It spelt out the theoretical framework for the provision of a unique identity for all its citizens as an important step towards putting, what Nilekani called, “human capital front and center as the main driver of productivity and growth”. His long experience in the corporate world and his passion for the citizen empowerment—as proved in the successful Bangalore Agenda Task Force experiment started in 1999 as well as enunciated in his 2009 book—made him the natural choice to be the first chairman of the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) that was being set up by the Union government to provide residents of India with a unique identity and a digital platform—known as the Aadhaar. Nilekani left Infosys to head the UIDAI in July 2009. In five years, Aadhaar has transformed India’s approach to socio-economic justice and equity, and became the lynchpin to the government’s welfare programmes that seek to achieve these goals. It also set the stage for an efficient and transparent mechanism to monitor government programmes, which is crucial to cut waste and slippage in order to maintain fiscal prudence at the national level. The authors of the essays in this volume are accomplished experts in their respective fields. Together, they piece together a wide range of issues relevant to India’s present and future: fiscal and monetary policies, political and economic governance, financial sector reforms, financial inclusion, urban development, corporate governance, competitive markets, food security, national security, public policy advocacy and information & communication technology. The volume not only offers clear-cut analyses on these topics, but also a clear vision for the future.
