Book excerpt: Excerpt from Home Portraiture: For Amateur Photographers HE following chapters are intended as supplementary instructions in the art of photography for those who have learned its first principles. Most attention has been paid to the Chief elements of success in home portraiture, which are Posing and Light ing, and less to the after manipulations of Printing, etc. I do not think it necessary to describe in detail the many printing processes, but prefer to refer the reader to special treatises, if more than the manufacturer's instructions are required. I feel that such a course is the best one, because, during my connection with a journal devoted to the interests of amateur photographers, I had almost unequalled facilities for inspecting amateurs' first attempts at portraiture, and, in the majority of cases, printing, toning, etc., were really excellent, while posing and lighting had been woefully neglected. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Amateur Photographer's Hand Book: A Manual of Instruction for the Amateur Although this book cannot be called an invention, yet necessity is its mother; it is needed by beginners, by amateurs and by many who make the art a business. And this, after all, may be only another way of alluding to "a long felt want." It is only a little book, yet it embodies the result of a "powerful amount" of work and experiment. When the author was beguiled into buying a camera many years ago, he could find nothing in print which explained clearly the various operations. There were numerous instruction books, but they omitted the explanations which were of vital importance to the beginner. Therefore he was compelled to grope in the dark, experimenting continually, and often uselessly, wasting precious time - not to mention dollars - which he could ill afford to lose. The instruction books misled him, as they do to-day, and chemicals were wasted because the formulas were wrongly given. "Dissolve one ounce of pyro in sixteen ounces water." He did so, and after four-fifths of the solution had grown black and valueless, he learned that it was not wise to dissolve more pyro than was to be used immediately. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Evening Work for Amateur Photographers To photographers the coming of winter is indeed a melan choly time, for they love the sun, 'and the sun is seldom to be seen in our dull, damp English winter time. We must indeed envy our Canadian cousins, who know not of our troubles, unless, indeed, they are so ill-advised as to spend a winter in England. They are used to a sharp, cold atmo sphere, with the thermometer lingering below zero in a way it never does here. But the air is dry, and they do not feel it; moreover, their houses are built in such a way that the cold air cannot get in, and the warm air is not wasted up the chimneys. So the poet's line, All things that love the sun are out of doors, will hold good all the year round in Canada; but here in England the lovers of sunlight must stop indoors or pay for their temerity, excepting always those cast - iron individuals already referred to. Although the amateur photographer is debarred from pursuing with the camera his ordinary course of work, there are certain opportunities for taking pictures which are only afforded during the winter time. I, of course, refer to hoar-frost and snow studies. But these can be under taken only by the robust, and by those who have leisure and the means of watching their opportunity. For instance. Book excerpt: Excerpt from How to Make Pictures: Easy Lessons for the Amateur Photographer In the space of eight weeks a second edition of this book has been demanded. This must be due to the awakening of a great popular desire for amateur photography. The devotees are to be found among scientists, microscopists, bankers, merchants, the ladies, the youth, yachtsmen, canoeists; in fact it would be hard to say where they are not, and it is because of a love of the art, the increase of adherents, and the great success which has attended their efforts, that the author finds cause for congratulation. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Photography Made Easy For more than twenty years it has been my daily task to reply to enquiries made by amateur photographers, the majority of them beginners, each morning's post bring ing from half a dozen upwards. No one could do this for long without knowing fairly accurately what it is which the novice wishes to know, or ought to know; and, in writing this book, the questions put to me have been constantly in mind. If the directions given in some cases seem needlessly explicit, I ask any reader who is impatient, to believe that there are other would-be photographers who have found less explicit instructions puzzling to them. Mere verbiage I hate as much as anyone but experience shows that brevity is often bought at the expense of clearness. And that it is very difficult to write even so little as a single sentence of practical instruction in photography which anyone with no previous knowledge whatever of the subject is able to under stand fully. Most of the book is limited strictly to practical photo graphy; but the two chapters on how a lens works have been included because, although they do not come strictly under that heading, they may indirectly help the user of a lens to understand its principles, and to apply that know ledge in his work. So many seem to think the working of a lens a very difficult thing to grasp, and ask questions which a careful reading of those two chapters should make quite unnecessary. Those who do not feel tempted to go into the subject can pass them over and keep to the strictly practical side of the subject. It only remains to add that, while the book has been founded upon the Lessons for Beginners, which have been a weekly feature in The Amateur Photographer and Photo graphy for the last ten years, it is not an exact reprint of any of them, but has been gathered from many, and revised and modified to give it its present form. Read; make notes; carry them; and consult them frequently at the appropriate time - these are excellent rules to follow. How To Study This Book The method used in studying any book is very important, and especially is this true in Photography. If you attempt to digest too much of the material herein, at a few readings, you will soon relegate the book to the attic in despair, therefore, go about it correctly. It is well to read through the whole book at the start, if you get well interested, but no notes whatsoever should be made at this reading. Your second, third, fourth, and further readings are the readings on which to make your notes. For the beginner, all he will need for a while is written in the first eleven chapters. The subject-matter is given with the object of making it just as easy and simple as possible for the beginner, therefore, every step is laid out in a simple manner and with an eye to the order in which the different steps should be studied. Naturally a description of cameras and lenses belongs in the opening pages of the book, but it does not necessarily imply that the beginner should thoroughly learn these principles before taking a picture. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Dictionary of Photography for the Amateur and Professional Photographer In the preparation of the present edition of the Dictionary Of Photography the aim has been the production of a complete yet concise volume of reference, mainly for the practical photographer. Nearly a hundred extra pages and many hundreds of new definitions have been added, and while retaining those features that have made the Dictionary a standard work, a certain amount of matter found to be obsolete or superfluous in the previous edition has been deleted. Several new processes, etc., that have come into general use since the publication of the Eighth Edition of the Dictionary are included and dealt with fully. The definitions now included, although primarily intended to be explanatory only, have in a great number of instances been enlarged to the proportions of descriptive articles where the subjects have been thought of sufficient interest for the general worker. In most cases also the task of revision has been directed towards the concentration of information previously scattered throughout the book, as, for example, in the cases of "Developers and Development," "Toning," or "Photo-Mechanical Processes." Under these heads will be found all information relating to the various phases and subdivisions of the subjects; while in their respective alphabetical order, terms appertaining thereto are briefly mentioned, and cross-references made to the main articles concerned. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Home Portraiture Made Easy The Little Books on photography of which this is one are the outcome of The Practical Lessons for Beginners which have appeared every week since July, 1904, in The Amateur Photo grapher, and are still continuing. The unparalleled expression of appreciation with which those Lessons have met leaves little room for doubt that there are very many who would find such plain talks on every-day photographic practice useful in book form. To merely reprint the Lessons from The Amateur Photographer would hardly have been sufficient, and the subjects dealt with, therefore, have been en tirely, re-written. In the following pages it is hoped that the beginner will find practical help in making por traits in an ordinary living-room; but the reader is advised to procure the other Little Books which are uniform with this, the subjects of which are: How to Ensure Correct Exposure.
