Book excerpt: Hi. I see you’re reading the back of my book. This tells me that you either: A) are hoping to find a brief summary of what to expect from a how-to book by Sterling Archer, the world’s greatest secret agent, or B) don’t know how books work. If your answer was “A,” your best bet is probably the table of contents, which is where you’ll find the “contents” of this book listed in a convenient, easy-to-read “table” format. So maybe go check that out for a minute and then come back here. I’ll wait. . . . Pretty cool, right? What other book will teach you how to dress properly and how to drive an elephant? How to field strip an AK-47 and how to haggle with a Thai prostitute—in her native tongue? How to pilot an airboat and how to make about a million delicious cocktails, including a Molotov one? How to kill a guy and how to prepare a fabulous brunch? Plus how to do tons of other stuff that I forgot, but that is nonetheless probably in this book (which, to be honest, I really only kinda skimmed). So if you want to learn more about how to be more—or at all—like Sterling Archer, the world’s greatest secret agent, quit smearing your greasy fingerprints all over this book and buy it. For one thing, I really need the royalties. For another thing, the last time I checked, this wasn’t a damn library. (Note: If your answer was “B,” this probably isn’t the book you want to start with.)

I wanted to lose myself in the small town of Pelion, Maine. To forget everything I had left behind. The sound of rain. The blood. The coldness of a gun against my skin. But the moment I meet Archer Hale, my entire world tilts on its axis . . . and never rights itself again. Until I trespass into his strange, silent, and isolated world, Archer communicates with no one. Yet in his whiskey-colored eyes, something intangible happens between us. There's so much more to him than just his beauty, his presence, or the ways his hands communicate with me. On me. But it's only in Archer's silence that we might just find what we need to heal . . . and live. Includes an exclusive extended epilogue from Archer's POV! Book excerpt: From the #1 best-selling author of The Alchemist comes an inspiring story about a young man seeking wisdom from an elder, and the practical lessons imparted along the way. Includes stunning illustrations by Christoph Niemann. “A novelist who writes in a universal language.” —The New York Times In The Archer we meet Tetsuya, a man once famous for his prodigious gift with a bow and arrow but who has since retired from public life, and the boy who comes searching for him. The boy has many questions, and in answering them Tetsuya illustrates the way of the bow and the tenets of a meaningful life. Paulo Coelho's story suggests that living without a connection between action and soul cannot fulfill, that a life constricted by fear of rejection or failure is not a life worth living. Instead one must take risks, build courage, and embrace the unexpected journey fate has to offer. With the wisdom, generosity, simplicity, and grace that have made him an international best seller, Paulo Coelho provides the framework for a rewarding life: hard work, passion, purpose, thoughtfulness, the willingness to fail, and the urge to make a difference.

Book excerpt: Aloysius Archer, the straight-talking World War II veteran fresh out of prison, returns in this riveting #1 New York Times bestselling thriller from David Baldacci. The 1950s are on the horizon, and Archer is in dire need of a fresh start after a nearly fatal detour in Poca City. So Archer hops on a bus and begins the long journey out west to California, where rumor has it there is money to be made if you’re hard-working, lucky, criminal—or all three. Along the way, Archer stops in Reno, where a stroke of fortune delivers him a wad of cash and an eye-popping blood-red 1939 Delahaye convertible—plus a companion for the final leg of the journey, an aspiring actress named Liberty Callahan who is planning to try her luck in Hollywood. But when the two arrive in Bay Town, California, Archer quickly discovers that the hordes of people who flocked there seeking fame and fortune landed in a false paradise that instead caters to their worst addictions and fears. Archer’s first stop is a P.I. office where he is hoping to apprentice with a legendary private eye and former FBI agent named Willie Dash. He lands the job, and immediately finds himself in the thick of a potential scandal: a blackmail case involving a wealthy well-connected politician running for mayor that soon spins into something even more sinister. As bodies begin falling, Archer and Dash must infiltrate the world of brothels, gambling dens, drug operations, and long-hidden secrets, descending into the rotten bones of a corrupt town that is selling itself as the promised land—but might actually be the road to perdition, and Archer’s final resting place.

Obviously, you won’t be as good at it as I am, but that’s because you’re you, and I’m Sterling Archer. I know, I know, it sucks not being me. But don’t beat yourself up about it, because I’m going to show you all the good stuff—what to wear; what to drink; how to seduce women (and, when necessary, men); how to beat up men (and, when necessary, women); how to tell the difference between call girls and hookers (hint: when they’re dead, they’re just hookers) and everything about weapons, secret devices, lying ex-girlfriends, and turtlenecks. In a word? How to Archer.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Everyone who has progressed past the stage of ‘just shooting’ knows that moment of mental confusion when the subconscious mind somehow takes control over the conscious attempt to release the string steadily for accurate, repeatable shots, leaving a surprise poor shot and a sense of amnesia about what led up to it. Don’t PANIC – it‘s just a reflex! The archery world has long referred to this as ’target panic’. Yet most affected archers feel no sense of panic at all: they plan the shot, feel comfortable about taking it, and are unafraid of the bow recoiling or the arrow hitting its mark. In fact, they experience no ‚panic’ at all. Yet most find that they experience the same outcome: an uncontrolled release, followed by that baffled feeling. As the arrow lands askew, and our memory of those critical moments goes blank, we ask ourselves „What happened there?” In this ground-breaking practical guide Jes Lysgaard applies his background in psychology and hypnotherapy to his experience as a traditional archer, to uncover what our minds are actually doing as we live this frustrating experience. Jes explains how this neural program has quietly become so deeply ingrained over the course of our hundreds of previous successful shots that, at that vital moment in our shot cycle, it knows “this is what good looks like; go now!”, quite outside our conscious control. Meanwhile, the cognitive process which we have rehearsed to hold and expand for an involuntary, perfectly stable release is still obediently determined to hold the string until it releases automatically. This sudden clash between opposing neural signals - the conscious ‘hold!’ and the subconscious ‘release now!‘ - gives rise to that bewildering mental flurry and yet another uncontrolled release. Not a ‘panic’ at all. Just the Archer’s Reflex. REGAIN CONTROL – REPROGRAM YOUR BRAIN In practical steps which you can follow as you practise, Jes shows how to deprogram your own Archer’s Reflex, and build in its place a new, positive, replacement neural program with which you can regain control over your shot cycle and fresh enjoyment of your shooting. REDISCOVER THE JOY OF SHOOTING
