Administrators face the complex task of developing equitable, predictable ways to evaluate, encourage, and reward good teaching in science, math, engineering, and technology. Evaluating, and Improving Undergraduate Teaching in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics offers a vision for systematic evaluation of teaching practices and academic programs, with recommendations to the various stakeholders in higher education about how to achieve change. What is good undergraduate teaching? This book discusses how to evaluate undergraduate teaching of science, mathematics, engineering, and technology and what characterizes effective teaching in these fields. Why has it been difficult for colleges and universities to address the question of teaching effectiveness? The committee explores the implications of differences between the research and teaching cultures-and how practices in rewarding researchers could be transferred to the teaching enterprise. How should administrators approach the evaluation of individual faculty members? And how should evaluation results be used? The committee discusses methodologies, offers practical guidelines, and points out pitfalls. Evaluating, and Improving Undergraduate Teaching in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics provides a blueprint for institutions ready to build effective evaluation programs for teaching in science fields.

And the way to make yourself a great teacher is to learn to think and act like one. In this updated second edition of the best-selling Never Work Harder Than Your Students, Robyn R. Jackson reaffirms that every teacher can become a master teacher. The secret is not a specific strategy or technique, nor it is endless hours of prep time. It's developing a master teacher mindset—rigorously applying seven principles to your teaching until they become your automatic response: Start where you students are. Know where your students are going. Expect to get your students there. Support your students along the way. Use feedback to help you and your students get better. Focus on quality rather than quantity. Never work harder than your students. In her conversational and candid style, Jackson explains the mastery principles and how to start using them to guide planning, instruction, assessment, and classroom management. She answers questions, shares stories from her own practice and work with other teachers, and provides all-new, empowering advice on navigating external evaluation. There's even a self-assessment to help you identify your current levels of mastery and take control of your own practice. Teaching is hard work, and great teaching means doing the right kind of hard work: the kind that pays off. Join tens of thousands of teachers around the world who have embarked on their journeys toward mastery. Discover for yourself the difference that Jackson's principles will make in your classroom and for your students.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past two decades, evaluation and assessment have been fundamental to education reform efforts to create a high-quality teaching profession. To this end, reliance on the appraisal of teachers has gained favour with policy makers across a wide range of countries. This book uses a research project on teacher performance appraisal in Kenya to analyse and reflect on the education reform contexts associated with the origins and adoption of the teacher appraisal policy. It argues that schools need to implement effective teacher performance appraisal schemes because of their potential benefits, there is a growing need to tackle some issues that make appraisals unpopular and that schools need firm policies on teacher continuous development to be integrated into appraisal programmes if quality education strategies are to be accomplished. It is recommended that an effective "appraisal-for-development" scheme under a facilitating, professional and formative model would be the most desirable form of teacher appraisal. The book will appeal to students, teachers, education leaders and policy makers alike.

Book excerpt: This is the first book to pull together what we have learned about the impacts and challenges of data-intensive teacher evaluation systemsa defining characteristic of the current education policy landscape. Expert researchers and practitioners speak to what we know (and what remains to be known) about evaluation measures themselves, the implementation of evaluation systems, and the use of evaluation data. The authors argue that rigorous teacher evaluation systems have the potential to promote school improvement but only if the systems are carefully designed and implemented and the data they generate are interpreted and used appropriately. This timely and important volume will be relevant and useful to school and district administrators, policymakers, researchers, and teacher education institutions grappling with issues of teacher accountability and school leadership.

Book excerpt: In education circles there is a growing recognition that the quality of teaching affects student learning. In many countries, however, the concept--not to mention the use--of teacher appraisals sparks discussion whenever it is mentioned. According to what criteria? Who decides? And what should the results of teacher appraisals be used for? But education stakeholders are beginning to find some agreement with the idea that appraisals can be a key lever for focusing more on teaching quality and continuous professional development for teachers. This book summarizes the findings on teacher appraisals presented at the third International Summit on the Teaching Profession. Hosted by the Netherlands, the OECD, and Education International, the summit brought together education ministers, union leaders, and other teacher leaders from high-performing and rapidly improving education systems to discuss how teacher quality is defined and measured. The book explores how standards are set, and by whom, what systems are in place for teacher evaluation, and how evaluations are conducted. It also reveals how teacher evaluation contributes to school improvement and teacher self-efficacy.

Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2010 in the subject Pedagogy - The Teacher, Educational Leadership, grade: 3.0, - (Kabale University ), course: Educational Management, language: English, comment: I AM GRATEFUL TO ASSOCIATE WITH YOUR PUBLISHING COMPANY. AKAMPURIRA ABRAHAM, abstract: The study was carried out to investigate the effectiveness of Teachers' Performance in Secondary Schools. The methods used include qualitative and quantitative approaches to collect and analyse data. The research study was carried out in Kabale Municipality where it was found out that performance appraisal is not generally well conducted. There is poor feedback management, where appraisal results are not used for staff promotion, professional development or determining remunerations. Poor feedback has also bred into negative results like demotion, abuse and reduced salary. All the above have therefore resulted into staff failing to fill appraisal forms or when filled they fail to submit them to the Ministry of Education to use the appraisal results for staff promotion, job improvement and counselling sessions to improve staff competence.
