Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A former Wisconsin high school science teacher makes the case that how and why we teach science matters, especially now that its legitimacy is under attack. Why teach science? The answer to that question will determine how it is taught. Yet despite the enduring belief in this country that science should be taught, there has been no enduring consensus about how or why. This is especially true when it comes to teaching scientific process. Nearly all of the basic knowledge we have about the world is rock solid. The science we teach in high schools in particular—laws of motion, the structure of the atom, cell division, DNA replication, the universal speed limit of light—is accepted as the way nature works. Everyone also agrees that students and the public more generally should understand the methods used to gain this knowledge. But what exactly is the scientific method? Ever since the late 1800s, scientists and science educators have grappled with that question. Through the years, they’ve advanced an assortment of strategies, ranging from “the laboratory method” to the “five-step method” to “science as inquiry” to no method at all. How We Teach Science reveals that each strategy was influenced by the intellectual, cultural, and political circumstances of the time. In some eras, learning about experimentation and scientific inquiry was seen to contribute to an individual’s intellectual and moral improvement, while in others it was viewed as a way to minimize public interference in institutional science. John Rudolph shows that how we think about and teach science will either sustain or thwart future innovation, and ultimately determine how science is perceived and received by the public.

Book excerpt: The current qualitative phenomenological study involved identifying and exploring the factors contributing to the nursing faculty shortage of Western Massachusetts. Through interviews, 24 participants, including 5 for the pilot study, identified and discussed the reasons why they chose not to teach, or to continue to teach, and why registered nurses did not choose faculty teaching as a career track in education. Poor salaries were the primary factor contributing to the shortage of nursing faculty in Western Massachusetts. Participants provided personal insight and suggestions concerning various educational institutions in Western Massachusetts and participated in a Massachusetts survey that examined many suggestions to alleviate the faculty shortage in Western Massachusetts.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Future of Nursing explores how nurses' roles, responsibilities, and education should change significantly to meet the increased demand for care that will be created by health care reform and to advance improvements in America's increasingly complex health system. At more than 3 million in number, nurses make up the single largest segment of the health care work force. They also spend the greatest amount of time in delivering patient care as a profession. Nurses therefore have valuable insights and unique abilities to contribute as partners with other health care professionals in improving the quality and safety of care as envisioned in the Affordable Care Act (ACA) enacted this year. Nurses should be fully engaged with other health professionals and assume leadership roles in redesigning care in the United States. To ensure its members are well-prepared, the profession should institute residency training for nurses, increase the percentage of nurses who attain a bachelor's degree to 80 percent by 2020, and double the number who pursue doctorates. Furthermore, regulatory and institutional obstacles-including limits on nurses' scope of practice-should be removed so that the health system can reap the full benefit of nurses' training, skills, and knowledge in patient care. In this book, the Institute of Medicine makes recommendations for an action-oriented blueprint for the future of nursing.

Each story opens with a photograph of the nurse's shoes and offers a unique, passionate, personal, and sometimes controversial perspective on nursing in today's health care environment. A springboard for spirited discussion about the future of nursing. When nurses read these reflections of the daily battle to provide quality health care to ordinary people, they are encouraged to act, taking a leadership position in transforming their profession and nurses' role in health care delivery as a whole"--

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sub-Saharan Africa has only 12 percent of the global population, yet this region accounts for 50 percent of child deaths, more than 60 percent of maternal deaths, 85 percent of malaria cases, and close to 67 percent of people living with HIV. Sub-Saharan Africa, however, has the lowest number of health workers in the world-significantly fewer than in South Asia, which is at a comparable level of economic development. The Labor Market for Health Workers in Africa uses the analytical tools of labor markets to examine the human resource crisis in health from an economic perspective. Africa's labor markets are complex, with resources coming from governments, donors, the private sector, and households. Low numbers of health workers and poor understanding of labor market dynamics are major impediments to improving health service delivery. Yet some countries in the region have developed innovative solutions with new approaches to creating a robust health workforce that can respond to the continent's health challenges. As Africa grows economically, the invaluable lessons in this book can help build tomorrow's African health systems.

Book excerpt: Provides important new content on specific ethical, leadership, and advocacy capabilities that advance the DNP role in nursing practice This core text for the DNP curriculum encompasses all facets of the evolving advanced practice role including diverse professional opportunities and options for career advancement. With ten completely new chapters, the third edition conveys the latest developments in doctoral-level capabilities, including the specific ethical, leadership, and advocacy components that advance these roles. New content addresses health equity, role negotiation, ethical and leadership dilemmas for the clinician, and the preceptor role in relation to doctoral-level advanced practice. Considering the predominance of students seeking the Nurse Practitioner role, the book emphasizes the clinical context for the DNP along with the new AACN Domain of Professionalism. There also are contributions from Nurse Midwives, Nurse Anesthetists, Clinical Nurse Specialists, and DNPs in the Nurse Educator role. The text is distinguished by distinctive Reflective Responses to the authors of all chapters. These may be characterized as a Point-Counterpoint feature—consisting of commentaries by scholars of varying points of view—that stimulates substantive critical dialogue. It examines the role of evidence—both practice-based evidence and evidence-based practice—in the context of clinical problems and policy formation and focuses on how the doctoral advanced prepared nurse can discriminate, translate, and sometimes generate new nursing evidence. The text addresses the need for both forms of evidence and underscores the importance of innovative healthcare intervention models. Included is practical information illustrated with examples geared for both BSN-DNP students and MSN-DNP students. Content on the DNP/PhD double doctorate and the impact of DNP leadership on organizations further examines the relationship between nursing practice, education, and science. New to the Third Edition: Ten new chapters, including coverage of: COVID-19; BSN-DNP Trajectories; Practice-Based Evidence and Evidence-Based Practice; Health Equity; Role Negotiation, Ethical, Leadership, and Advocacy Roles; and 2021 AACN Essentials Expanded roles and content for students of varying experience levels Emphasis on the new AACN Domain of Professionalism throughout Key Features: Focuses on DNP role development with extensive contributions by leading DNP scholars and clinicians Delivers Reflective Responses in a Point-Counterpoint format to stimulate vigorous class discussion Provides critical thinking questions throughout including Reflective Response
