Book excerpt: We have had an operant-conditioning rat lab associated with either our Experimental or Introductory Psychology course at Western Michigan University since 1964. Many students report that the rat lab is very exciting and that they find it the best feature of our course. It has been our impression however that this lab has an even more important effect. The experience of directly modifying the behavior of another organism is a primary factor in demonstrating to students the power and validity of the basic principles of behavior.

Book Synopsis Learning, Speech, and the Complex Effects of Punishment by : Donald K. Routh

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: DONALD K. ROUTH WHAT THIS BOOK IS ABOUT A reader who happens onto this book on the library shelf may find the title a puzzle. Learning is one broad subject. Speech is another. And the "complex effects of punishment" might seem far afield from either. Perhaps, intrigued by this apparent diversity and wanting to discover what common theme underlies it, the reader may begin leafing through the chapters. The first one recounts a series of studies of rats-using learning techniques from the psychology laboratory, to be sure, but applied to the study of behavior genetics, sex differences, and aging. The second chapter has to do with young children's discrimination learning. Then, there is a chapter on learning sets. Next, there is a chapter on stuttering. Then the topic shifts back to the study of learning in rats. Then, there is a clinical chapter on punishment effects. Finally, there is a historically oriented essay on Iowa psychology graduates. Surely, by now the puzzled reader wants an explana tion of why such diversity belongs between the covers of a single book.

Book Synopsis Issues in the Analysis of Behavior by : Richard W. Malott
Download or read book Issues in the Analysis of Behavior written by Richard W. Malott and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2012-01-14 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is designed to be an intermediate-level text in the analysis of behavior that should all, in concept, somewhere between introductory texts, such as Keller and Schoenfeld's Principles of Psychology, Ferster & Perrott's Behavior Principles, or Whaley and Malott's Elementary Principles of Behavior; and more advanced works, such as Honig's Operant Behavior: Areas of Research and Application. However this textbook is self-contained and could, therefore, be read by the more diligent student without a background in behavioral analysis. Most of the issues discussed in this text are somewhat controversial, even among professional behavior analysts. So while we might hope to win a few minor controversies along the way, the primary purpose of this text is to increase the skill of the reader in using behavioral concepts in the analysis of complex behavioral phenomena. In addition, we do with selected topics in the philosophy of science in which the behavioral analysts will most likely be interested.
Book Synopsis Behavior Therapy by : William O'Donohue
Download or read book Behavior Therapy written by William O'Donohue and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-10-17 with total page 797 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive overview of first, second, and third wave behavior therapies, comparing and contrasting their relative strengths and weaknesses. Recent discussion and research has focused intently on third wave behavior therapies, in particular Dialectical Behavior Therapy and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). This is in contrast with first wave behavior therapies (what today might be called applied behavior analysis or clinical behavior therapy) and second wave behavior therapies brought about by the “cognitive revolution”. The editors aim to provide a fuller understanding of this psychotherapeutic paradigm, tracking how behavior therapies have evolved through history and various paradigm shifts in the field. To this end, the book is organized into five sections covering: Introduction to the three waves of behavior therapy Assessment and measurement strategies Comparative issues and controversies Applications of the three waves of behavior therapy to 7 major disorders: anxiety, depression, obesity, psychosis, substance abuse, ADHD, and chronic pain Implications of and future directions for behavior therapies This volume provides a useful perspective on the evolution of cognitive behavior therapy that will inform the study and practice of a variety of mental health professionals.
