Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book is a great, to-the-point, read about what's important." For most of my life, I worked so hard externally to fix how I felt inside. I got better jobs, better skills, lived in better places. And, to some degree, that made me happier. But I still had this gnawing feeling inside of me, this feeling that something wasn't right. I tried Band-Aids like meditation and (unfortunately) positive thinking, yet those didn't make it go away. Rather than step up the fight, I did my best to distract myself from that feeling. That is until a combo of a botched LASIK surgery and a nationwide quarantine made that gnawing feeling something I couldn't ignore anymore. It soon became the only thing that mattered in my life, a monster that needed to be acknowledged. This book details my journey through that monster, thanks to the help of the right teachers at the right time. It's a compilation of 14 of essays that describe what I unlearned, to go from ignorance toward the truth. Essay topics in the book include - Clarity on what we are not. How I began to overcome my biggest fears. Shedding the heaviest emotion. Finally confronting my demon of 1,000 faces. Most importantly, steps toward clearing my mind and achieving inner peace. This isn't about me telling you how to think, it's about empowering you to fight your own gnawing feeling inside by sharing my own journey and some of the techniques I found useful. And I did my best to make the read conversational and concise, so it doesn't feel like a slog you have to get through. I hope you enjoy the book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most evangelical Christians believe that those people who are not saved before they die will be punished in hell forever. But is this what the Bible truly teaches? Do Christians need to rethink their understanding of hell? In the late twentieth century, a growing number of evangelical theologians, biblical scholars, and philosophers began to reject the traditional doctrine of eternal conscious torment in hell in favor of a minority theological perspective called conditional immortality. This view contends that the unsaved are resurrected to face divine judgment, just as Christians have always believed, but due to the fact that immortality is only given to those who are in Christ, the unsaved do not exist forever in hell. Instead, they face the punishment of the "second death"--an end to their conscious existence. This volume brings together excerpts from a variety of well-respected evangelical thinkers, including John Stott, John Wenham, and E. Earl Ellis, as they articulate the biblical, theological, and philosophical arguments for conditionalism. These readings will give thoughtful Christians strong evidence that there are indeed compelling reasons for rethinking hell.

Book excerpt: The Revelations of Julian of Norwich (sixteen visions inspired by the crucified Christ which she received during a serious illness) are recorded in two versions: the short text, written near the time; and the better-known second version, completed some twenty years later. The short text has a personal quality which Julian chose, probably for reasons of modesty, to edit out in her later version, but it has a simplicity and natural grace which give a clear sense of Julian as a person, and has been chosen by Frances Beer as the basis of this translation. Also included is Julian's doctrine of the Motherhood of God, excerpted from the long text. The introduction covers Julian's life and places her in the larger context of the fourteenth-century English mystical tradition.

A novel so compelling that it begs to be read in a single setting, The Sense of an Ending has the psychological and emotional depth and sophistication of Henry James at his best, and is a stunning achievement in Julian Barnes's oeuvre. Tony Webster thought he left his past behind as he built a life for himself, and his career has provided him with a secure retirement and an amicable relationship with his ex-wife and daughter, who now has a family of her own. But when he is presented with a mysterious legacy, he is forced to revise his estimation of his own nature and place in the world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The acclaimed Bible scholar and author of The Historical Jesus and God & Empire—“the greatest New Testament scholar of our generation” (John Shelby Spong) —grapples with Scripture’s two conflicting visions of Jesus and God, one of a loving God, and one of a vengeful God, and explains how Christians can better understand these passages in a way that enriches their faith. Many portions of the New Testament, introduce a compassionate Jesus who turns the other cheek, loves his enemies, and shows grace to all. But the Jesus we find in Revelation and some portions of the Gospels leads an army of angels bent on earthly destruction. Which is the true revelation of the Messiah—and how can both be in the same Bible? How to Read the Bible and Still be a Christian explores this question and offers guidance for the faithful conflicted over which version of the Lord to worship. John Dominic Crossan reconciles these contrasting views, revealing how different writers of the books of the Bible not only possessed different visions of God but also different purposes for writing. Often these books are explicitly competing against another, opposing vision of God from the Bible itself. Crossan explains how to navigate this debate and offers what he believes is the best central thread to what the Bible is all about. He challenges Christians to fully participate in this dialogue, thereby shaping their faith by reading deeply, reflectively, and in community with others who share their uncertainty. Only then, he advises, will Christians be able to read and understand the Bible without losing their faith.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jesus told His followers to go into the world and preach the Good News. However, many Christians aren’t fulfilling this Great Commission. The call to “evangelize” conjures up uncomfortable images of walking inner city streets with a megaphone. We don’t relish facing possible ridicule so prevalent in society today, so we hesitate to reach out. But we are called to witness. And it isn’t that difficult. When we anchor in the goodness of Christ, we realize that sharing the Gospel is a profound honor. The Ministry of the Unveiled Face grounds us in the simplicity of sharing Christ in the everyday. The meekness of the call lies in our being responsive and obedient to God’s prompting as we interact with others. Anchored in persevering prayer, we speak scriptural truths into the lives of others as the Holy Spirit leads. Like the unveiling of a beautiful bride at her wedding, the spiritual veil is removed and Christ’s truth and goodness are revealed.

Book excerpt: National Book Award Finalist: “This man’s ideas may be the most influential, not to say controversial, of the second half of the twentieth century.”—Columbus Dispatch At the heart of this classic, seminal book is Julian Jaynes's still-controversial thesis that human consciousness did not begin far back in animal evolution but instead is a learned process that came about only three thousand years ago and is still developing. The implications of this revolutionary scientific paradigm extend into virtually every aspect of our psychology, our history and culture, our religion—and indeed our future. “Don’t be put off by the academic title of Julian Jaynes’s The Origin of Consciousness in the Breakdown of the Bicameral Mind. Its prose is always lucid and often lyrical…he unfolds his case with the utmost intellectual rigor.”—The New York Times “When Julian Jaynes . . . speculates that until late in the twentieth millennium BC men had no consciousness but were automatically obeying the voices of the gods, we are astounded but compelled to follow this remarkable thesis.”—John Updike, The New Yorker “He is as startling as Freud was in The Interpretation of Dreams, and Jaynes is equally as adept at forcing a new view of known human behavior.”—American Journal of Psychiatry
