Awoleye & Siyanbola (2005), Bimer (2000), indicated that computers have some gendered attributes that favor man in some way so that men are more likely to use computers and they are more confident. Therefore it can be said that many studies has been support the gender factor in self-efficacy, but this research also showed that this changes are more likely to be depend on the complexity of the task and the year of computer usage of the particular student as Busch(1995) has been found the similar results. Similar to the study of Compeau, and Higging (1995), it is found that self-efficacy shapes the individuals beliefs and behaviors as well. It is not surprising to find out that students have different computer levels and this affects their self-efficacy. Also some students have advance computer knowledge, therefore they complain about the level of the computer courses offered to them. In addition to this it can be said that students with different computer skills shows different self-efficacy levels as well.

Book excerpt: This quantitative research study explored the relationship between students' perceived computer self-efficacy and actual knowledge of computer related skills in computer hardware/technology, windows, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint and whether gender, race, and education level affected the research findings. The participants in this study were students enrolled in an introductory computer concepts course at a community college located in the southeastern region of the United States. The computer course was a requirement for all students to receive an Associate of Arts and Associate of Applied Science degree. Data was collected in traditional face-to-face class sections and consisted of a pre- and post-computer self-efficacy survey and a pre- and post-test skills assessment on three different campuses. The scores in the area of computer hardware/technology, windows, Word, Excel, and Power Point were compared to determine whether a relationship exists between Computer self-efficacy and actual knowledge in the area of computers. In addition to a series of a one-way Analysis of Variance, a Repeated Measures Analysis of Variance, and a Bivariate Correlation, the study also utilized descriptive analysis of demographic data and responses to a questionnaire regarding participants' prior technology experience and usage. Findings of the study indicated that students' computer self-efficacy was much greater than actual knowledge in the area of computers. Findings of the study did show no significant difference in computer self-efficacy concerning gender, race, and education. No significant differences were found in the education level and skill level of the participants at the beginning of the CSC 1113 course. A significant difference was found in skill level among the different races at the beginning of the CSC 1113 course with the exception of Power Point. The study did show that there was no significant difference in skill level for gender except in the area of technology. The study found a positive correlation in the numbers of computer courses students completed in high school to computer self-efficacy at the beginning of the semester in the course CSC 1113. At the completion of the course CSC 1113, Computer Concepts, computer self-efficacy scores were significantly higher. Findings also showed a significant increase in the skill levels, Windows, Word, Excel, and Power Point at the completion of the CSC 1113 course. The study had not shown significant difference in hardware/technology skills at the completion of the CSC 1113 course. --Page ii.

Studies have been done to examine these phenomena, but the vast majority center around the academic environment, and many are deemed archaic due to advances in technology. To examine this problem, this research study's goal was to develop a valid and reliable instrument that measures self-reported computer competence, overall attitudes toward computers, and attitudes toward e-learning appropriate for the corporate, adult learner. The author reviewed various investigations that examined the definition of attitudes toward computers and the phenomenon of computer literacy. Little research exists that examines attitudes toward e-learning, and there is a lack of research for exploring all three phenomena on a nonacademic population. The result of the study yielded the Regan Computer Competence, Attitude, and Behavior Survey. This instrument consists of five sections, totaling 130 items. Each section was comprised of entirely new questions or a combination of existing instruments whose validity and reliability have been explored in previous studies. The author employed a sample of 144 American adults working in a corporate or government organization. The author's analysis revealed that the Regan Computer Competence, Attitude, and Behavior Survey was a valid and reliable instrument. In addition, hypotheses were examined in this research study that looked at the correlation between certain variables and the three phenomena in question.

The papers were authored by researchers from Australia, Brunei Darussalam, Thailand, Malaysia, United Kingdom, and Indonesia. All papers have been scrutinized by a panel of reviewers who provide critical comments and corrections, and thereafter contributed to the improvement of the quality of the papers.

Book excerpt: It is well known that throughout the 1980s and 1990s, with the growth of computer use in the workplace, older workers had greater difficulties than younger workers in learning new computer skills. Not only were older workers having more difficulties in acquiring new computer skills, but research revealed that their self-efficacy beliefs were also lower, having an adverse effect on their ability to learn and develop new skills. Also, there have been some conflicting results with regards to the mediating effects or influence that educational level has on the acquisition of skills. With a large baby-boom population in Canada, and despite some reaching retirement age, many older workers are choosing to remain in the workforce for various reasons. Since most jobs today require computer skills, it is important to investigate whether older workers are still having the same difficulties, since this may have important implications for organizations. This study proposes five hypotheses to examine how age, computer self-efficacy, and educational level influence computer training outcome. Ninety-two participants, aged 18 to 66 (M = 37.6, SD = 12.7), took part in a two-hour computer training session. Demographic data were collected, followed by measures of pre-training computer self-efficacy and pretest of computer skills. Participants received computer skills instruction, and completed posttest and post-training computer self-efficacy measures. Findings revealed that age negatively influenced computer training outcome, but no correlation was found between age and pre-training computer self-efficacy (and this remained consistent with the post-training self-efficacy measure). An ANCOVA indicated a significant effect of pre-training computer self-efficacy on computer training outcome. While age had a negative effect on training outcome, the absence of a relationship between age and pre-training computer self-efficacy ruled out the possibilities of mediation. Similarly, the absence of a relationship between age and educational level and between educational level and computer training outcome, ruled out the possibility of mediation. Post-training self-efficacy predicted both pretest and posttest results, but age had a significant negative weight, indicating that after accounting for post-training computer self-efficacy, older participants were expected to have lower posttest scores. Results are discussed in terms of implications, limitations, and future research.

The following conclusions were drawn from this study: (a) The number of prior computer classes taken and hours spent using the computer for educational purposes have a positive relationship to pretest computer literacy scores. The number of prior computer classes taken, hours spent using the computer for educational purposes, and hours spent using the computer for e-mail have a positive relationship to pretest computer use confidence scores. (b) Completion of an introduction to computers course results in a significant increase in computer use confidence ratings. (c) Completion of an introduction to computers course results in a significant increase in computer literacy scores. (d) Students completing an introduction to computers course have higher gains in both computer use confidence ratings and computer literacy than students not completing an introduction to computers course. (e) There is a positive relationship between computer use confidence ratings and computer literacy scores. Students with higher computer literacy scores will also have higher computer use confidence ratings.

Since nontraditional students typically have fewer skills than traditionally-aged students, they may be less efficacious regarding their ability to use technology. Unfortunately, such reduced confidence may adversely affect the entire college experience for students, and ultimately, successful employment. The simple process of obtaining information on campus websites may be daunting enough; however, when students enter the classroom, they often find that course requirements include considerable amounts of computer use. Therefore, in addition to learning specific course content, nontraditional students must also learn how to operate computers and conduct Internet research. Such expectations may reduce the potential for college success. To conduct the research, surveys were administered to students attending two Midwestern community colleges. Using the resultant data, various analyses were conducted to examine interactions between computer-related variables and course grades and completion rates. Results indicated that high school access was the most significant factor in determining computer efficacy in college students. The second most successful method of obtaining confidence was found among students who used computers for work. Students employed with computers also enrolled in more online courses than students who were unemployed or who worked in non-technical positions. Additional factors that correlated to efficacy were high-bandwidth Internet access and the availability of computer-related devices. Although more nontraditional than traditional students withdrew from college classes in general, nontraditional students were not more likely to withdraw from computer literacy or online courses. Therefore, adult students seemed to compensate for their reduced proficiency by persisting in the classes necessary to improve skills. Computer efficacy appeared to be more critical than computer skills in online course enrollment. Students with greater confidence in their abilities enrolled in more online courses, even if their actual skills were lower than other students. Additional relationships between computer skills and efficacy and college success factors such as persistance and improved grades are also discussed.

Educators continually search for the most effective approach to individualized instruction, but it remains to be explored how technology use relates to academic self-efficacy and academic achievement.This study addressed three questions through the social cognitive theory framework. What is the relationship between perceived academic self-efficacy and academic achievement in students at each successive grade level? What is the relationship between perceived academic self-efficacy and educational technology use for mathematics and reading instruction at each grade level? What is the relationship between educational technology use for mathematics and reading instruction and academic achievement? A quantitative correlational study was designed to explore the relationship between educational technology use, academic self-efficacy, and academic achievement. The sample included approximately N=414 students from an urban public middle school in the Northeast, N=100 students from each grade (5-8). A questionnaire was used to collect data on academic self-efficacy, academic achievement data were obtained from standardized STAR Assessments in reading and mathematics, and technology use data were collected from two educational technology programs.
