Book excerpt: Western bituminous coals from the Rocky Mountains are often of low volatility and contain unreactive macerals which are not easily burned in compact boilers designed for more reactive coals. Incomplete combustion leads to further disadvantages due to the contamination of fly ash with unburnt combustible matter. This makes it difficult to collect the fly ash in electrostatic precipitators (ESP) and subsequently to dispose of it as a useful residue, e.g., cement additive. The Canadian Combustion Research Laboratory (CCRL) has evaluated the combustion performance of an unreactive Western Canadian bituminous coal . A study has been made of the influence of the coal's combustion history and particle size distribution on its combustion properties, fly-ash characteristics and subsequent particulate emissions. Also, the influence of blending the coal with a more reactive coal has been examined. By using ash monitoring technique, it has been shown that it is possible to correlate fly-ash resistivity with carbon content and eventually perceptibility in a pilot-scale ESP. It has been found that the combustion efficiency of the coal improves with longer furnace residence times and with smaller input coal feed sizes. The influence of the carbon content of the fly-ash on its resistivity exhibited the usual "S" type curve with the abrupt decrease occurring at about 7% carbon. experience has shown that precipitator performance will deteriorate at higher carbon levels. Generally, it is possible, by using pilot-scale combustion evaluation techniques, to determine options for the use of unreactive coals in boilers that were not designed for them and which satisfy both the combustion performance and particulate emission requirements of these boilers.

Book excerpt: The potential for enhanced methane production and geologic sequestration of carbon dioxide in coalbeds needs to be evaluated before large-scale sequestration projects are undertaken. Geologic sequestration of carbon dioxide in deep unmineable coal seams with the potential for enhanced coalbed methane production has become a viable option to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The coal matrix is believed to shrink during methane production and swell during the injection of carbon dioxide, causing changes in tlie cleat porosity and permeability of the coal seam. However, the influence of swelling and shrinkage, and the geomechanical response during the process of carbon dioxide injection and methane recovery, are not well understood. A three-dimensional swelling and shrinkage model based on constitutive equations that account for the coupled fluid pressure-deformation behavior of a porous medium was developed and implemented in an existing reservoir model. Several reservoir simulations were performed at a field site located in the San Juan basin to investigate the influence of swelling and shrinkage, as well as other geomechanical parameters, using a modified compositional coalbed methane reservoir simulator (modified PSU-COALCOMP). The paper presents numerical results for interpretation of reservoir performance during injection of carbon dioxide at this site. Available measured data at the field site were compared with computed values. Results show that coal swelling and shrinkage during the process of enhanced coalbed methane recovery can have a significant influence on the reservoir performance. Results also show an increase in the gas production rate with an increase in the elastic modulus of the reservoir material and increase in cleat porosity. Further laboratory and field tests of the model are needed to furnish better estimates of petrophysical parameters, test the applicability of thee model, and determine the need for further refinements to the mathematical model.

Breathing CO at high concentrations leads to reduced oxygen transport by hemoglobin, which has health effects that include impaired reaction timing, headaches, lightheadedness, nausea, vomiting, weakness, clouding of consciousness, coma, and, at high enough concentrations and long enough exposure, death. In recognition of those health effects, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), as directed by the Clean Air Act, established the health-based National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS) for CO in 1971. Most areas that were previously designated as "nonattainment" areas have come into compliance with the NAAQS for CO, but some locations still have difficulty in attaining the CO standards. Those locations tend to have topographical or meteorological characteristics that exacerbate pollution. In view of the challenges posed for some areas to attain compliance with the NAAQS for CO, congress asked the National Research Council to investigate the problem of CO in areas with meteorological and topographical problems. This interim report deals specifically with Fairbanks, Alaska. Fairbanks was chosen as a case study because its meteorological and topographical characteristics make it susceptible to severe winter inversions that trap CO and other pollutants at ground level.
