Book excerpt: This book is about the Custom Cowboys of Houston County. It's a hard life. We've lived our lives fighting the rain, wind & weather, while riding the brush, briers and thickets of east Texas. The men these stories are about made a living with their horses and dogs during the Jet Age. They play the most important role in the cattle industry. No way ranchers could do without them. Their jobs are penning cattle to work, de-worming, helping with their necessary vaccinations, catching wild cattle, pasture doctoring sick cattle, pulling calves, thrashing cattle out of the brush and many other things that people never think about. They also get cattle out of the backwater when rivers & creeks overflow, trailing them down highways and roads when there is no way to haul them. I, for one, am glad I got to serve the public with my services as a cowboy for all the years I did. These are my stories, plus some that have been told to me by other cowboys.
Book Synopsis Birdlife of Houston, Galveston, and the Upper Texas Coast by : Ted L. Eubanks
Download or read book Birdlife of Houston, Galveston, and the Upper Texas Coast written by Ted L. Eubanks and published by Texas A&M University Press. This book was released on 2006-10-03 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the last thirty years, the Upper Texas Coast has become a “must go” destination for birders around the globe. This book will serve as an essential companion to the customary field guide and pair of binoculars for all visitors to Houston, High Island, Galveston, Freeport, or any of the area’s other exciting birding spots. It also places the birdlife of the region, a seven-county area with a larger bird list than forty-three states, into historical and ecological contexts. Authors Eubanks, Behrstock, and Weeks—all recognized authorities on the migrant and resident birds of this region—present a thorough introduction to the area’s history, physiography, and avifauna. Then, in generous discussions of bird families and species, they synthesize years of records, tracking the comings and goings of more than 480 birds and incorporating their own lifetimes of experience to create an “ornithological mosaic” of lasting significance.
Book Synopsis Sam Houston's Texas by : Sue Flanagan
Download or read book Sam Houston's Texas written by Sue Flanagan and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2010-06-28 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With engaging text, extensive quotations, and more than 100 striking photographs, this volume captures the world of the iconic Texas Revolutionary. When Sam Houston crossed the Red River for the first time in 1832, he termed Texas the “finest portion of the Globe that has ever blessed my vision.” His diplomatic, military, political, and personal activities took him all over what is now the eastern half of the state—and he fell in love with every foot of it. With panoramic vision and broad descriptive power, he expressed his lasting affection for the country in everything he said and wrote. Having followed the trail of every trip he made in Texas, Sue Flanagan presents the Texas Houston knew—through his picturesque language and her own evocative photographs. The face of Texas east of San Antonio is pictured in all its varied features. With great discernment, Flanagan captures the landscapes, buildings, and objects in the most revealing light and in the best atmospheric conditions. These spots in nature which Houston saw, these objects which he knew, these houses where he was entertained and where he lived—all are tangible reminders of “this colorful, cagey, and controversial man,” this Texas hero whose life was a tragedy in divided loyalties.

Book Synopsis Descendants of William Cromartie and Ruhamah Doane by : Amanda Cook Gilbert
Download or read book Descendants of William Cromartie and Ruhamah Doane written by Amanda Cook Gilbert and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2013 with total page 795 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This ambitious work chronicles 250 years of the Cromartie Family genealogical history. Included in the index of nearly 50,000 names are the current generations, and all of those preceding, which trace ancestry to our family patriarch, William Cromartie who was born in 1731 in Orkney, Scotland and his second wife, Ruhamah Doane who was born in 1745. Arriving in America in 1758, William Cromartie settled and developed a plantation on South River, a tributary of the Cape Fear near Wilmington, North Carolina. On April 2, 1766, William married Ruhamah Doane, a fifth generation descendant of a Mayflower passenger to Plymouth, Stephen Hopkins. If Cromartie is your last name, or that of one of your blood relatives, it is almost certain that you can trace your ancestry to one of the thirteen children of William Cromartie, his first wife, and Ruhamah Doane, who became the founding ancestors of our Cromartie Family in America: William Jr, James, Thankful, Elizabeth, Hannah Ruhamah, Alexander, John, Margaret Nancy, Mary, Catherine, Jean, Peter Patrick, and Ann E. Cromartie. These four volumes hold an account of the descent of each of these first-generation Cromarties in America, including personal antidotes, photographs, copies of family Bibles, wills and other historical documents. Their pages hold a personal record of our ancestors and where you belong in the Cromartie Family Tree.
