Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The last book on the lactating sow was published over 15 years ago. This new book brings us up to date in current knowledge on the gestating and lactating sow. It covers new and important topics such as conditioning of gilts for optimal reproductive performance, feeding high fibre diets to gestating sows and providing various fat sources in gestation and lactation. It also describes the several key success factors to group-housing systems in gestation, which is a must due to the current move towards group-housing. The new concept of transition feeding for sows is discussed, as well as the factors involved in mammary development of gilts and sows, both of which are instrumental for maximum colostrum and/or milk yields. The impact of the human-animal interactions on sow welfare and performance is discussed with focus on new handling practices that could be developed to overbalance the negative interactions inherent to pig management systems. Updates on must-have topics, such as amino acid and energy requirements of sows, colostrum and milk yield and composition, and sow health are also provided. The subjects covered in this book will assist animal scientists, nutritionists, veterinarians and swine producers in learning the most recent information on relevant and current topics affecting sow production, and in knowing which areas are in need of further research efforts.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The domestic pig is perceived as an animal with intelligence and character and yet, in the industrialized world, the majority of people have had little or no contact with them. Pigs are subject to a wide range of environments from the tropics to the sub-arctic, ranging from small-scale, extensive systems to large-scale intensive systems. They may spend their whole life on one farm or may be subject to long-distance transport multiple times. Not surprisingly, many aspects of their life experiences can impact their welfare. This book brings together a team of leading pig welfare research scientists to review the natural history of the pig, the welfare of pigs at different stages of life and to indicate what the future holds in terms of pig welfare. The text is aimed at researchers and teachers working in veterinary and animal science together with those working in the pig industry and for governmental and non-governmental animal welfare organizations.

Book excerpt: This new edition of the Code is intended as a guide for all people responsible for the welfare of pigs under both intensive, deep litter and outdoor systems. Good welfare of farmed pigs will ensure that pigs cope well in their environment and that factors such as growth, reproductive performance, disease levels, injuries and death rates are within industry standards. The Code recognizes that the basic requirement for the welfare of pigs is a husbandry system, managed by trained and skilled stock-people to ensure that basic needs of pigs are met: * Readily accessible appropriate and sufficient food and water * Adequate shelter to protect from climatic extremes * Opportunity to display appropriate patterns of behaviour * Physical handling in a manner which minimizes the likelihood of unreasonable or unnecessary pain or distress * Protection from, and/or rapid diagnosis and correct treatment of injury or disease * Freedom for necessary movement including to stand, stretch and lie down * Visual and social contact with other pigs This Model Code of Practice for the Welfare of Animals has been prepared by the Animal Welfare Working Group (AWWG) for the Primary Industries Ministerial Council (PIMC). The AWWG is made up of representatives from CSIRO, Animal Health Australia, the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry - Australia, and from each of the State Departments responsible for agriculture. Extensive consultation has taken place with industry and animal welfare organisations in the development of the Code. This new edition supercedes the Second Edition, SCARM Report 66

This book was released on 2019 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Welfare concerns regarding farrowing and lactating sows, commonly kept in single housing systems with farrowing crates, have led to an intensifying social debate, also being the subject of recent political considerations in Germany. The aim of this study was to analyse a free farrowing system with regard to its animal friendliness for sows and piglets, which was designed to be easily installed on commercial farms and offered space for a group of five lactating sows. Therefore, sows ́ and piglets ́ behaviour, skin injuries as well as piglets ́ weight gain were analysed during lactation. The piglets ́ skin lesions and weight gain in group housing (GH) were compared to piglets kept in conventional individual housing (IH), before and after weaning. The investigated GH-system was located on the research farm of the University of Veterinary Medicine Hannover, Foundation (Germany), and consisted of five farrowing pens (ca. 5 m2), a central common area (11.6 m2) as well as an area which was only available for the piglets (piglet area 1.8 m2). Inside the pens, rubber bollards and flexible iron bars replaced the farrowing crate to protect the piglets from being crushed by the sow. Three farrowing pens were equipped with less perforated plastic flooring (0.7 %), where straw could be provided daily, whereas the both remaining pens were fitted with more highly perforated plastic flooring (29 %) including a central lying area. Flexible steps at the entrance of the pens prevented the piglets from leaving the pens during their first days of life until they were physically able to master the steps. Sows could leave the pens by easily crossing the steps, thus being able to move freely within the housing system. In IH, sows were confined to farrowing crates throughout the housing period and piglets remained separated from foreign litters. The piglets were weaned 35 days post-partum on average in both housing systems. In total, data of 25 sows kept in GH and 34 litters kept in GH and IH were studied in a total of five batches. Video-observations were carried out to determine the activity and location of sows and piglets in GH. The suckling behaviour including cross-suckling was analysed by direct recording and the dunging behaviour by scoring the soiling of the different floor areas in GH. Skin lesions of several parts of the sows ́ and piglets ́ bodies were assessed by using a cumulative lesion score. Additionally, the occurrence of sows ́ shoulder lesions was documented. At weaning, some piglets were chosen for a further experiment and mixed into groups of ten, with five piglets from two different litters each. The two different litters within a group originated from the same farrowing system. Skin injuries and daily weight gain of these piglets were recorded. The piglets left the farrowing pens 10.6 days post-partum in GH, corresponding to the behaviour under semi-natural conditions. Between parturition and the time before the piglets could leave the farrowing pens, sows spent most of their time inside the pens together with their litters (p

This book was released on 2017 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two experiments were completed to evaluate the effects of different management strategies on commercial swine operations. Experiment 1 was divided into two separate studies. The objective of Study 1 was to evaluate the effects of floor space during the grow-finish period on pigs marketed at 136 kg. In Study 1, 170 commercial crossbred pigs were blocked by weight and sex, then randomly assigned to one of 5 floor space allocations of 0.71, 0.80, 0.89, 0.98, and 1.08 m2/per pig. Pigs remained on test at the assigned floor space until a pen averaged 136 kg, at which point Study 1 ended. Pigs were weighed and feed disappearance was recorded bi-weekly in order to calculate average daily gain (ADG), average daily feed intake (ADFI), and gain:feed ratio (G:F). Lameness and skin lesions were also recorded bi-weekly as indicators of individual pig welfare. Salivary cortisol was taken at 80 and 136 kg to evaluate physiological stress response to floor space allowance. The objective of Study 2 was to evaluate the effects of floor space allowance of pigs weighing 136 kg until marketing. In Study 2, 70 pigs were subjected to the same floor space allowances as in Study 1 for 14 days at which point they were weighed and feed disappearance was recorded to calculate performance characteristics previously described. Repeated measure analysis was used when analyzing performance data. There were no effects (P > 0.05) of floor space on ADG, ADFI, or G:F in Study 1. Additionally, there were no differences (P > 0.05) in salivary cortisol concentrations, or the incidence of lameness or skin lesions. Similarly, there were no differences (P > 0.05) in the performance or welfare data collected in Study 2. The objective of the second experiment was to evaluate the effects of rubber mat flooring on the mitigation of lameness and performance of sows during farrowing and lactation. In this experiment 213 multiparous lame (L) and non-lame (NL) sows were assigned standard farrowing crate control (C), or a crate with a heavy duty rubber mat fixed to the floor underneath the sow (R) in a 2 x 2 factorial design. Piglet weights were measured the week of farrowing and the week of weaning, while lameness, lesion scores, sow weight, and body condition measurements were obtained weekly. Additionally, 2 hours of behavioral observations were taken, using 15 minute interval scans (lying, standing, sitting, drinking, feeding, and nursing), post morning feeding over the course of 4 weeks in the farrowing crate. Farrowing records and piglet mortality data were obtained post-hoc via records from the farm’s computer database PigKnows®. The implementation of rubber mats did not affect (P > 0.05) lameness prevalence in either L or NL sows, however all sows on rubber mat spent a reduced proportion of time lying (P 0.05). Flooring treatment had an effect (P

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The last books discussing the neonatal or weaned pig were published over 15 years ago. This new book provides up to date information on the suckling and weaned piglet. It covers novel and important topics such as microbiota development in piglets and management of hyperprolific litters. It also discusses topics such as weaning age and its long term influence on piglet heath and performance. The developments of lean and fat tissues and of the intestinal immune system in young pigs are described in detail. Emphasis is put on well-being with chapters focussing on husbandry interventions in suckling piglets as well as consequences of the lactational environment on behavioural disturbances of pigs after weaning. The multiple stressors encountered at and post-weaning are also discussed. Updates on essential subjects such as neonatal mortality, creep feeding of suckling piglets, feeding strategies for weaned pigs, housing systems post-weaning and diseases of piglets are provided. The information covered in this book should be of great assistance to animal scientists, nutritionists, veterinarians and swine producers. They will be made aware of most recent knowledge that will assist in improving the performance and welfare of suckling and weaned piglets.
