Book excerpt: Between April 2001 and July 2002 over one thousand NHS clinical staff were suspended for more than a month. This not only costs the NHS more than £40 million it also adversely affects the clinicians, even if they are exonerated. This report, based on a report from the Comptroller and Auditor General (HC 1143 2002-03 ISBN 0102923558), examines the scale and costs of exclusions and the way the process could be better managed. It finds that there is a need for accurate and timely reporting of exclusions and another survey to determine the true cost. Also the guidance issued in 2003 only applies to doctors, similar guidance is needed for other clinical staff.
