Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Crazy Horse was as much feared by tribal foes as he was honored by allies. His war record was unmatched by any of his peers, and his rout of Custer at the Little Bighorn reverberates through history. Yet so much about him is unknown or steeped in legend. Crazy Horse: A Lakota Life corrects older, idealized accounts—and draws on a greater variety of sources than other recent biographies—to expose the real Crazy Horse: not the brash Sioux warrior we have come to expect but a modest, reflective man whose courage was anchored in Lakota piety. Kingsley M. Bray has plumbed interviews of Crazy Horse’s contemporaries and consulted modern Lakotas to fill in vital details of Crazy Horse’s inner and public life. Bray places Crazy Horse within the rich context of the nineteenth-century Lakota world. He reassesses the war chief’s achievements in numerous battles and retraces the tragic sequence of misunderstandings, betrayals, and misjudgments that led to his death. Bray also explores the private tragedies that marred Crazy Horse’s childhood and the network of relationships that shaped his adult life. To this day, Crazy Horse remains a compelling symbol of resistance for modern Lakotas. Crazy Horse: A Lakota Life is a singular achievement, scholarly and authoritative, offering a complete portrait of the man and a fuller understanding of his place in American Indian and United States history.

Book excerpt: This book is a historical novel. It is inspired by the life of Isaiah Dorman. It has to be a historical novel because there is virtually no information about his early life as a slave on the Louisiana plantation where he was believed to have been born. Also, there is only sketchy information on his time spent with the Santee Sioux, and there is only basic information about his years working with the Army. However, all the information about the life of a slave on a cotton and rice plantation during his lifetime has been meticulously researched as has been the life of the Santee Sioux during that time period. The historical events are also factual and well researched. The book is written in three parts: The Slaves, The Sioux, and The Soldiers. The Slave portion deals with Isaiah’s life on the plantation until he ran away in his early twenties. This section explores his early years; his relationship with his parents, peers and his attitudes about being a slave. The period with the Santee Sioux explores his life with this tribe and his relationship with the warriors and other members of the tribe. It also tells how he met his wife and about their life together. His time with the Army is detailed up until the time he met his death on June 25, 1876 scouting for General Custer at the battle of the Little Bighorn. The Aftermath deals with what transpired after with the Sioux and African Americans in the years after the battle.

Book excerpt: Food Connections follows the movement of food from its production sites in West Africa to its final spaces of consumption in Europe. It is an ethnographic study of economic and social life amongst a close-knit community of food producers, traders and consumers and a wide range of small intermediaries that operate in Guinea-Bissau and Portugal. By investigating the way meanings of food and land are embedded in everyday experiences and relationships in the various phases of the movement, on both sides of the migration, it reveals the connections that transnational processes of food production, exchange and consumption generate between two lifeworlds.

Book excerpt: Religious education in Nigeria is in a state of transformation, owing to the country's current pluralist nature among other factors. In the process, concepts of religion and education are revisited and reassessed in order to make them meaningful to mankind in his pluralist world. With this book, author Michael Okoh inaugurates a fundamental revision. He brings traditional African education and values alongside Christian ideals into dialogue with the "Western progressive learning approaches," paving new ways for religious education activity in Nigeria, particularly in Igboland. Book excerpt: This is a revised edition of Chinua Achebe (1980), a critical study of the most widely known African writer, which now incorporates a discussion of his most recent work, including his major new novel, Anthills of the Savannah. The study examines the context in which he writes - that complex intermingling of his own Igbo society and European colonialism - before undertaking a critical discussion of the five main novels, his poetry and short stories. Throughout, there is an underlying concern with Achebe's system of values and the pressure on them through periods of colonialism, independence, political disillusionment and civil war. The author, finally, seeks to relate Achebe's career to the role of the African writer, a subject on which the novelist has written at length.
