Book excerpt: This book tells the story of German-language literature on film, beginning with pioneering motion picture adaptations of Faust in 1897 and early debates focused on high art as mass culture. It explores, analyzes and contextualizes the so-called 'golden age' of silent cinema in the 1920s, the impact of sound on adaptation practices, the abuse of literary heritage by Nazi filmmakers, and traces the role of German-language literature in exile and postwar films, across ideological boundaries in divided Germany, in New German Cinema, and in remakes and movies for cinema as well as television and streaming services in the 21st century. Having provided the narrative core to thousands of films since the late 19th century, many of German cinema's most influential masterpieces were inspired by canonical texts, popular plays, and even children's literature. Not being restricted to German adaptations, however, this book also traces the role of literature originally written in German in international film productions, which sheds light on the interrelation between cinema and key historical events. It outlines how processes of adaptation are shaped by global catastrophes and the emergence of nations, by materialist conditions, liberal economies and capitalist imperatives, political agendas, the mobility of individuals, and sometimes by the desire to create reflective surfaces and, perhaps, even art. Commercial cinema's adaptation practices have foregrounded economic interest, but numerous filmmakers throughout cinema history have turned to German-language literature not simply to entertain, but as a creative contribution to the public sphere, marking adaptation practice, at least potentially, as a form of active citizenship.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The term 'word order studies' designates an area of syntax which has become an increasingly central theme in linguistic research. Since, in at least a narrow sense, syntax is the study of how meaningful elements are put together to form sentences, a preoccupation with word order would seem inherent in any syntactic study. However, the focus implied by 'word order studies' is anything but trivial, going as it does to the heart of two vital areas of linguistic theory: language universals, and the form of linguistic models. The present collection of papers offers the reader an opportunity to examine some of the more recent ideas in this broad area, concentrating on some of the more controversial issues within the generative-transformational model.

Book excerpt: In this final volume in the epic adventures of the Blades of the Moonsea, Geran Hulmaster seeks revenge against the mage who hurt his family and his people Rhovann Disarnnyl was once an arrogant elf lord who exploited the life of luxury his ancestral home in Myth Drannor afforded him. But that was before the upstart human Geran Hulmaster maimed him in a duel—and before Rhovann was exiled from Myth Drannor for practicing shadow magic. In a cruel act of vengeance, Rhovann drives Geran’s family from their ancestral lands, fills Hulburg with nightmarish goelms to enforce his will, and crushes the natives with the aggressive enforcement of unfair laws. But Geran Hulmaster will not stand idly by as Rhovann continues his tyrannical rule. Intent on making Rhovann’s life miserable, he violates his exile to stalk the streets of his former home, hunting down the wretched moon elf mage and rallying the oppressed people of Hulburg. But Geran’s enemies are as numerous as the laws he breaks in the name of revenge—and each and every one of them is determined to see him dead.

This quirky adventure story is perfect for reading out loud. The Robber Hotzenplotz works hard at his job, waking early to hide in the woods and waylay new victims. One morning Kasperl’s grandmother is sitting in the sun outside her house, grinding coffee in her new musical coffee mill—a birthday gift from Kasperl and his best friend Seppel—when suddenly Hotzenplotz, attracted by the music, leaps out to steal the mill. Sergeant Dimplemoser hears Grandmother’s cries and comes to her aid, but Hotzenplotz has evaded the useless police for years. So Kasperl and Seppel vow to catch the robber themselves. But catching robbers is not as easy as all that... Kasperl and Seppel soon discover that even the best-laid plans can be foiled, especially when Hotzenplotz enlists the help of his wicked magician friend Petrosilius Zackleman, a gluttonous villain with a weakness for fried potatoes.
