Book excerpt: A frenzied escape. A city of hope. An unforeseen threat. Skyra, Lincoln, and their companions have narrowly escaped a brutal war between Neanderthals and humans. Now they find themselves far in the future, in a world filled with a puzzling assortment of creatures, many with a craving for flesh and a habit of attacking in swarms. With equipment remaining for only one more time jump, the group must try to make a life here or risk jumping to an even more hostile environment. The good news? A city of gleaming skyscrapers is visible in the distance. After a harrowing journey through miles of wilderness, the travelers discover the city is empty. Or is it? Never mind the giant killer bats roosting in the abandoned buildings-something else is here, a presence not even Lincoln, with his vast technological knowledge, can explain. Skyra is Neanderthal, Lincoln is human, but they are bound by an intense love for each other. They just want to find a safe place to start a new life. The abandoned city seems like a suitable home-until the residents begin to show themselves. Hostile Emergence, the third book in the Across Horizons series, is for readers who love time travel adventures, strange alien societies, and unforgettable characters.

Download or read book The Emergence of Corporate Governance written by Knut Sogner and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-05-31 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Corporate governance is not just about models of best practice organisation or prescriptions following laws or social conventions. Corporate governance is also about persons of power seeking performance, and they do so in ways that transcend structures and pre-conceived notions of the structural set-up of the business. This book emphasises the decision-making dimensions of corporate governance, placing it right in the messy middle of the ever-changing world of capitalism, focussing on the interplay between professional managers and shareholders. This book aims to bring together several fresh perspectives on the development of capitalism seen through the lens of corporate governance. It illustrates the role of intentionality and persons, both as a method with which to understand processes of change, but also as a principle with which to seek a deeper understanding of the corporate governance choices made. It will be of interest to researchers, academics and students in the fields of corporate governance and entrepreneurship, as well as practitioners and other audience interested in the evolution of capitalism and corporate culture.
Book Synopsis The Hostile Mind: The Sources And Consequences Of Rage And Hate by : Leon Joseph Saul
Download or read book The Hostile Mind: The Sources And Consequences Of Rage And Hate written by Leon Joseph Saul and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2015-11-06 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THE PURPOSE of this book is to provide some basic psychiatric information about human hostility. It is also a call to the relevant sciences and to intelligent men and women everywhere to turn their attention to the world’s most important and urgent danger: man’s hostility to man, in the hope of helping to handle, control and alleviate the great suffering it creates. As this is written, the newspapers report that plans for a rocket trip to the moon are being discussed, that a scientist has devised a reasonable and practical way to travel to Mars and back. What was unthinkable yesterday becomes tomorrow’s reality. The fact that great strides are daily being made in the understanding of human nature rarely makes headlines. But it is true that the dream of man maturing fully, living peacefully with his fellow men, and achieving his real nature of goodness and strength is now as much within our reach theoretically as is the dream of space travel. What makes criminals and great men, what makes the loftiest achievements of the human spirit and what makes the destruction, chaos and unutterable bestiality and misery of war—this is now known. To apply such knowledge is a vast and enormously difficult task in human engineering, but it is only a practical task. To show that this is so and to focus attention upon it is the goal of this book.

Book Synopsis Corporate Takeover Law and Management Discipline by : Francis A Okanigbuan Jnr
Download or read book Corporate Takeover Law and Management Discipline written by Francis A Okanigbuan Jnr and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-12-06 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the effectiveness of corporate takeovers. The dominant ideologies of corporate takeovers include synergistic gains and its managerial disciplinary role. These dominant themes are being undermined by the challenges of costly acquisitions. The UK Takeover Code is a regulatory response to the role of managers of target companies only. Also, the regulatory framework for takeovers in the United States is largely focused on target companies. The book demonstrates that managements can influence the role of takeovers, thereby undermining its synergistic and disciplinary values. Presenting an identification and evaluation of the limits of current regulatory and judicial control over the role of management during takeovers in the UK and the US -Delaware, it will identify the relevance of institutional control as an effective mechanism for addressing the challenges of managerial influence over takeover functions. It will also identify how the role of managements can be addressed with the complementary benefit to shareholder and employee interests; thereby challenging the shareholder/ stakeholder primacy debate in corporate law, particularly in relation to takeovers. This book will be essential reading for scholars and students interested in the market for corporate control, corporate law and company law.

Book Synopsis Toward a Concrete Philosophy by : Mikko Immanen
Download or read book Toward a Concrete Philosophy written by Mikko Immanen and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2020-11-15 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Toward a Concrete Philosophy explores the reactions of Theodor Adorno, Max Horkheimer, and Herbert Marcuse to Martin Heidegger prior to their dismissal of him once he turned to the Nazi party in 1933. Mikko Immanen provides a fascinating glimpse of the three future giants of twentieth-century social criticism when they were still looking for their philosophical voices. By reconstructing their overlooked debates with Heidegger and Heideggerians, Immanen argues that Adorno, Horkheimer, and Marcuse saw Heidegger's 1927 magnum opus, Being and Time, as a serious effort to make philosophy relevant for life again and as the most provocative challenge to their nascent materialist diagnoses of the discontents of European modernity. Our knowledge of Adorno's "Frankfurt discussion" with "Frankfurt Heideggerians" remains anecdotal, even though it led to a proto-version of Dialectic of Enlightenment's idea of the entwinement of myth and reason. Similarly, Horkheimer's enthusiasm over Heidegger's legendary post–World War I lectures and criticism of Being and Time have escaped attention almost entirely. And Marcuse's intriguing debate with Heidegger over Hegel and the origin of the problematic of "being and time" has remained uncharted until now. Reading these debates as fruitful intellectual encounters rather than hostile confrontations, Toward a Concrete Philosophy offers scholars of critical theory a new, thought-provoking perspective on the emergence of the Frankfurt School as a rejoinder to Heidegger's philosophical revolution.

Book Synopsis Projecting the Future Through Political Discourse by : Patricia L. Dunmire
Download or read book Projecting the Future Through Political Discourse written by Patricia L. Dunmire and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2011 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph examines the rhetorical nature and function of representations of the future in political discourse, focusing on political actors use of hegemonic images of future reality to achieve their political goals. It argues that a key ideological dimension of political rhetoric lies in politicians use of projections of the future to legitimate policies and actions. This argument is grounded in systemic-functional and critical discourse analyses of the Bush Doctrine, the U.S. policy response to the September 11 terrorist attacks which sanctioned a preemptive military posture. By focusing on the discursive construction of the future, this project addresses a lacunae in critical discourse studies and calls attention to the crucial role that the discourse and practice of futurology has played in post-Cold War politics and society. It will be of value to scholars interested in the discourses of politics, the war on terror, U.S. national security, and futurology."
Book Synopsis Economics, Culture and Social Theory by : William A. Jackson
Download or read book Economics, Culture and Social Theory written by William A. Jackson and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2009 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: . . . the book is excellent in setting out and explaining a fundamental critique of economics one moreover that has been missed by most other current critics of the field. Making this case is an achievement. Hopefully, it will have a greater impact than its author probably expects. Journal of Cultural Economics Economics evolved by perfecting the taking of culture out of its reductionist and virtual world. But culture has recently been reintroduced, both as a sphere of application for an otherwise unchanging methodology and as a weak form of acknowledging that the economic alone is inadequate as the basis even for explaining the economy. This volume is an essential critical starting point for understanding the changing relationship between economics and culture and in offering a more satisfactory and stable union between the two. Ben Fine, University of London, UK Economics, Culture and Social Theory examines how culture has been neglected in economic theorising and considers how economics could benefit by incorporating ideas from social and cultural theory. Orthodox economics has prompted a long line of cultural criticism that goes back to the origins of economic theory and extends to recent debates surrounding postmodernism. William A. Jackson discusses the cultural critique of economics, identifies the main arguments, and assesses their implications. Among the topics covered are relativism and realism, idealism and materialism, agency and structure, hermeneutics, semiotics, and cultural evolution. Drawing from varied literatures, notably social and cultural theory, the book stresses the importance of culture for economic behaviour and looks at the prospects for a renewed and culturally informed economics. The book will be invaluable to heterodox economists and to anyone interested in the links between culture and the economy. It takes an interdisciplinary approach, arguing against the isolation of economics, and will therefore hold wide appeal for social scientists working in related fields, as well as for economists specialising in cultural economics and economic methodology.
Book Synopsis Hostile Homes by : Steven A. Hirschler
Download or read book Hostile Homes written by Steven A. Hirschler and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-09-01 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the ways in which the state and private security firms contribute to the direct and structural harm of asylum seekers through policies and practices that result in states of perpetual destitution, exclusion, and neglect. By synthesising historic and contemporary public policy, criminological and sociological perspectives, political philosophy, and the direct experiential accounts of asylum seekers living within dispersed accommodation, this text exposes the complex and co-dependent relationship between the state’s social control aims and neoliberal imperatives of market expansion into the immigration control regime. The title borrows from former Home Secretary Theresa May’s pronouncement that the UK government aimed to foster a ‘hostile environment’ in its response to illegal immigration. While the Home Office later attempted to rebrand its hostile environment policy as a ‘compliant environment’, this book illustrates how aggressive approaches toward the management of asylum-seeking populations has effectively extended the hostile environment to those legally present within the UK. Through an examination of the expanded privatisation of dispersed asylum housing and the UK government’s reliance on contracts with private security firms like G4S and Serco, this book explores the lived realities of hostile environments as asylum seekers’ accounts reveal the human costs of marketised asylum accommodation programmes.
Book Synopsis A Global History of Pre-Modern Warfare by : Kaushik Roy
Download or read book A Global History of Pre-Modern Warfare written by Kaushik Roy and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-09-14 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the military histories of the regions beyond Western Europe in the pre-modern era. Existing works on global military history mainly focus on the western part of Eurasia after 1500 CE. As regards the ancient period, such works concentrate exclusively on Greece and Rome. So, ‘global’ military history is actually the triumphal story of the West from Classical Greece onwards. This volume focuses not only on the eastern part of Eurasia but also on South America, Africa and Australasia and seeks to explain the history and varied trajectories of warfare in non-Western regions in the pre-modern era. Further, it evaluates whether warfare in non-Western regions should be considered primitive or inferior when compared with Western warfare. The book notes that Western Europe became militarily significant only in the early modern era and argues that the military divergence that occurred during the early modern era is not unique – it had also occurred in the Bronze Age, the Classical era and in the medieval period. This was due to the dynamism and innovativeness of non-Western militaries and the interconnectedness that existed in parts of the Eurasian landmass. Further, those polities which were able to construct a balanced military force by synthesising diverse elements were not only able to survive but also became capable of projecting power across continents. This book will be of much interest to students of military history, strategic studies and world history.

Book Synopsis Hostile Business and the Sovereign State by : Michael J. Strauss
Download or read book Hostile Business and the Sovereign State written by Michael J. Strauss and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-01-02 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes and assesses an emerging threat to states’ territorial control and sovereignty: the hostile control of companies that carry out privatized aspects of sovereign authority. The threat arises from the massive worldwide shift of state activities to the private sector since the late 1970s in conjunction with two other modern trends – the globalization of business and the liberalization of international capital flows. The work introduces three new concepts: firstly, the rise of companies that handle privatized activities, and the associated advent of "post-government companies" that make such activities their core business. Control of them may reside with individual investors, other companies or investment funds, or it may reside with other states through state-owned enterprises or sovereign wealth funds. Secondly, "imperfect privatizations:" when a state privatizes an activity to another state’s public sector. The book identifies cases where this is happening. It also elaborates on how ownership and influence of companies that perform privatized functions may not be transparent, and can pass to inherently hostile actors, including criminal or terrorist organizations. Thirdly, "belligerent companies," whose conduct is hostile to those of states where they are active. The book concludes by assessing the adequacy of existing legal and regulatory regimes and how relevant norms may evolve.
