Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If you really stress out when people come to your house, then you might struggle with hospitality. You don't need to be a perfect hostess or housekeeper to have people feel welcome in your home. "Hospitality in a Nutroll" is an entertaining book of stories, examples, and guidelines on how to be hospitable in many different situations. Rebeca DePra shares the secrets and shortcuts she has learned through her life experience and her faith. What if your parents are staying overnight (or your in-laws, Yikes ), or perhaps a friend of your spouse shows up for dinner unexpectedly? What to do? What do you feed them? What if the house is a wreck? Find answers in this sometimes humorous approach to hospitality. If all else fails, you can use the "secret weapon of welcome" - serve your guests the delicious Nutroll. Rebeca Freytes Chico DePra known to most as Becky, is a Christian, an artist, a teacher, a stay at home mom of three, and a loving wife. She has ADHD which makes her spontaneous and often hilarious (according to her husband). Becky feels called to share her understanding of hospitality with others. Born in Puerto Rico, she grew up in a culture where spontaneous hospitality comes naturally. As a pastor's child, her home was open to all, from dignitaries to the homeless. Her mother's example taught her to be hospitable to everyone, regardless of their status. Her Paternal Grandmother (Abuela Regina) showed her that offering a simple drink of water could bless a stranger. Becky has been blessed with many life experiences, both good and bad, that have taught her to trust in the Lord, and to make guests feel welcome no matter what the circumstances.

Book excerpt: Holistic nutritionist and highly-regarded blogger Sarah Britton presents a refreshing, straight-forward approach to balancing mind, body, and spirit through a diet made up of whole foods. Sarah Britton's approach to plant-based cuisine is about satisfaction--foods that satiate on a physical, emotional, and spiritual level. Based on her knowledge of nutrition and her love of cooking, Sarah Britton crafts recipes made from organic vegetables, fruits, whole grains, beans, lentils, nuts, and seeds. She explains how a diet based on whole foods allows the body to regulate itself, eliminating the need to count calories. My New Roots draws on the enormous appeal of Sarah Britton's blog, which strikes the perfect balance between healthy and delicious food. She is a "whole food lover," a cook who makes simple accessible plant-based meals that are a pleasure to eat and a joy to make. This book takes its cues from the rhythms of the earth, showcasing 100 seasonal recipes. Sarah simmers thinly sliced celery root until it mimics pasta for Butternut Squash Lasagna, and whips up easy raw chocolate to make homemade chocolate-nut butter candy cups. Her recipes are not about sacrifice, deprivation, or labels--they are about enjoying delicious food that's also good for you.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mary Ann Conklin, also known as "Madame Damnable," ran Seattle's first hotel, the Felker House, which burned to the ground in the Great Seattle Fire of 1889. The Rainier Hotel was erected quickly following the Great Seattle Fire but razed around 1910. The Denny Hotel, an architectural masterpiece later known as the Washington Hotel, was built in 1890 but torn down in 1907 during the massive regrade that flattened Denny Hill. Upon opening in 1909, the Sorrento Hotel was declared a "credit to Seattle" by the Seattle Times. The Olympic Hotel was the place for Seattle's high society throughout the 1920s. The Hotel Kalmar was a workingman's hotel built in 1881 and was razed for the Seattle tollway. The Lincoln Hotel was destroyed by a tragic fire in 1920, along with its rooftop gardens. The famous and grand Seattle Hotel in Pioneer Square was replaced by a "sinking ship" parking garage, thus sparking preservationists to band together to establish Pioneer Square as a historic district. Robin Shannon is the author of two previous books in Arcadia's Images of America series: Cemeteries of Seattle and Seattle's Historic Restaurants. In this volume, Seattle's historic hotels are preserved in more than 200 vintage photographs, postcards, and memorabilia, allowing readers to revisit visionary hoteliers and magnificent architecture of the past. The Images of America series celebrates the history of neighborhoods, towns, and cities across the country. Using archival photographs, each title presents the distinctive stories from the past that shape the character of the community today. Arcadia is proud to play a part in the preservation of local heritage, making history available to all.
