Book excerpt: “This coffee-table book is the first-ever collection of works devoted to celebrating black models. Fashion devotees will find glorious images of supers such as Iman, Tyra Banks, Naomi Campbell, Joan Smalls, and Adwoa Aboah alongside interviews and personal essays.” —Vogue Filled with revealing essays, interviews, and stunning photographs, Supreme Models pays tribute to black models past and present: from the first to be featured in catalogs and on magazine covers, like Iman, Donyale Luna, and Beverly Johnson, to the supermodels who reigned in the nineties—Tyra Banks, Naomi Campbell, and Veronica Webb. The book also observes the newest generation of models—Adut Akech, Jourdan Dunn, and Joan Smalls—who are shaking up the fashion industry by speaking out about racial prejudice while becoming social media sensations. Written by celebrity fashion stylist and journalist Marcellas Reynolds, Supreme Models features more than 70 women from the last 75 years. Reynolds writes, “I hope that everyone who reads this book learns something about the models included within—and more about the business of fashion and modeling. But what I want most is for Supreme Models to be a source for the little boys, or girls, who like my childhood self, need to see themselves represented in a positive light.” The book, filled with gorgeous photographs of the women, details their most memorable campaigns, covers, editorials, and runway shows. Black models have been influencing fashion and pop culture for decades, reshaping beauty standards and boundaries. Supreme Models is a celebration of their monumental impact.

Book excerpt: Specializing in the most-prized gemstones, from Colombian emeralds to sapphires found in the remote hills of Kashmir, David Morris celebrates color, flawless craftsmanship, and unique creativity in jewelry design. This is the jewelry house’s first major book. David Morris established his eponymous fine jewelry house in 1962 at the height of the Swinging Sixties and quickly gained a global reputation for his opulent use of the rarest, most extraordinary gemstones and for innovative design sought by jewelry connoisseurs the world over. The house’s creations—now overseen by his son Jeremy Morris—are all designed and handcrafted to exacting standards in the New Bond Street atelier. This sumptuous slipcased tome, featuring brand-new photography and newly commissioned gouaches created especially for the book, delves into the enchanting history of David Morris, aka the London Jeweler, whose legacy shines as brilliantly as the gemstones the house atelier transforms into objects of art. Over the years the house has gained a reputation for adorning Hollywood, British, and European royals from Elizabeth Taylor to Diana, Princess of Wales. Today, a David Morris jewel still radiates star quality, connecting the brand’s storied past to its future. This first major monograph debuts some of the house’s latest, most innovative designs as well as a large selection of its most famous pieces, and beautifully showcases the sophistication and creativity of one of the most masterful jewelers working today.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Is Hardcore is Pulp's cry for help. A giant, sprawling, flawed masterpiece of a record, the 1998 album manages to tackle some of the most inappropriate grown-up issues of the day – fame, ageing, mortality, drugs, and pornography – and still come out crying and laughing on the other side. The subject of pornography dominates the record – from its controversial artwork to the images conjured up by songs like "Seductive Barry" and the title track – after Pulp's main man, Jarvis Cocker – who'd spent most of his teenage and adult life chasing celebrity, only to be cruelly disappointed when it finally arrived in spades – hit upon the grand notion of using pornography as a metaphor for fame. The album's commercial failure as a follow-up to the band's Britpop-defining, Different Class, also symbolizes a death knell for Britpop itself. Dark, right? Except just like Pulp themselves, Jane Savidge's book is playful and sometimes very funny indeed. Kicking off with an imaginary conversation between Jarvis Cocker and the people who run the Total Fame Solutions helpline, Savidge expertly guides us through the trials and tribulations of an album that begins with the so-called Michael Jackson Incident, when Cocker got up on stage at the 1996 Brit Awards and waggled his fully-clothed bum at the King of Pop. Pulp's This Is Hardcore may be a sleazy run through porn and mental demise, and an album that chronicles Cocker's continuing disillusionment with his newfound lot in life, but Savidge's book assesses the cultural and historical context of the album with insider knowledge and a sharp modern lens, ultimately making a case for it as one of the most important albums of the 1990s.

Book excerpt: One of the most important artistic movements in recent years is chronicled and showcased in this dynamic work.Born in Germany in the years following the collapse of the Communist regime, the New Leipzig School started when a group of classmates at the Leipzig Academy rediscovered figurative art. Their paintings reflected the melancholy that pervaded East Germany as it struggled with capitalism, high unemployment and depopulation. Fifteen year later, paintings by the Leipzig school and its related movement, Dresden Pop, are conquering the international art market. The authors take on this important trend one painter at a time. They examine each artist's oeuvre on its own merit and consider various factors behind the movements--the onset of the digital age, social disillusionment and individual protest. Breathtaking reproductions allow readers to form their own ideas about what constitutes and drives new German painting, and understand its significance around the world.
