Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What do you do when there are goldfish in the horse's water tank, a baby magpie in the bedroom, a cow in the kitchen and a half-dozen small dogs rolling in the dirt to get rid of the smell of skunk? It's all in a day's work on Gayle Bunney's farm near Bonnyville, Alberta. Bunney's hilarious and heartwarming stories are filled with down-to-earth observations on country life and the animals she loves. There's Old Pete, the cow that uses the kitchen sink as a water trough; Tramp, the fearless little dog who takes on coyotes and muskrats and climbs on a roof in pursuit of a cat; and Studley, the diminutive but raging black stallion. From encounters with eccentric neighbours and a curious herd of buffalo to the perils of working in a country bar and Internet dating, cowgirl style, Bunney conveys the frustrations and joys of rural Alberta life with wit and compassion.

Book Synopsis Leaving the Wild by : Gavin Ehringer
Download or read book Leaving the Wild written by Gavin Ehringer and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2017-12-05 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A thought-provoking and surprising book that explores the ever-evolving relationship between humans and domesticated animals. The domestication of animals changed the course of human history. But what are the consequences for these animals who have abandoned their wild existence in exchange for our care and protection? Domestication has proven to be a wildly successful survival strategy, but this success has not been without its drawbacks. A modern dairy cow’s daily energy output equals that of a Tour de France rider. Feral cats overpopulate urban areas. And our methods of breeding horses and dogs have resulted in debilitating and sometimes lethal genetic diseases. But these problems and more can be addressed, if we have the will and the compassion. Human values and choices determine an animal’s lot in life even before he or she is born. Just as a sculptor’s hands shape clay, so human values shape our animals—for good and or evil. The little-examined, yet omnipresent act of breeding lies at the core of Gavin Ehringer’s eye-opening book.
Book Synopsis Animal Welfare by : Sir Colin Spedding
Download or read book Animal Welfare written by Sir Colin Spedding and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-02-04 with total page 179 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Awareness of the use of animals in human society in fields such as farming, biotechnology and sport is dogged by the lack of a clear and objective exposition of the issues involved and a sense of possible conflict between human and animal welfare. This text addresses these dilemmas - what is the actual scale of the animal welfare problem; where does responsibility begin; what positive steps are actually being taken to alleviate animal suffering; and can a rational and compelling argument be given for the importance of animal welfare. It therefore aims to offer a comprehensive guide to the uninformed as well as those who have knowledge of the issues but lack conviction.
Book Synopsis Minding Animals in the Old and New Worlds by : Steven Wagschal
Download or read book Minding Animals in the Old and New Worlds written by Steven Wagschal and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2018-10-16 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Minding Animals in the Old and New Worlds employs current research in cognitive science and the philosophy of animal cognition to explore how humans have understood non-human animals in the Iberian world, from the Middle Ages through the early modern period. Using texts from European and Indigenously-informed sources, Steven Wagschal argues that people tend to conceptualize the minds of animals in ways that reflect their own uses for the animal, the manner in which they interact with the animal, and the place in which the animal lives. Often this has little if anything to do with the actual cognitive abilities of the animal. However, occasionally early authors made surprisingly accurate assumptions about the thoughts and feelings of animals. Wagschal explores a number of ways in which culture and human cognition interact, including: the utility of anthropomorphism; the symbolic use of animals in medieval Christian texts; attempts at understanding the minds of animals in Spain's early modern farming and hunting books; the effect of novelty on animal conceptualizations in "New World" histories, and how Cervantes navigated the forms of anthropomorphism that preceded him to create the first embodied animal minds in fiction.
