Book Synopsis Horse Mandalas / Mandala Horses by :
Download or read book Horse Mandalas / Mandala Horses written by and published by Hunter House. This book was released on 2012-10-09 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the author writes in the introduction, "Horses are inspiration on four legs. If you have ever seen a horse galloping towards freedom with his head held high and his nostrils wide open, you know that you will never forget that image." Meanwhile, designing and coloring mandalas is an activity that has been around for centuries. The 46 original designs in this charming coloring book bring together the inspiration of horses -- their beautiful lines, thrilling movement and sense of freedom -- with the centering esthetic and timeless beauty of mandalas. Author, illustrator, and horse trainer Miriam Nieuwe Weme created these patterns using images of horses and the traditional rotational symmetry of the mandala design. Some of the horse mandalas are complex and intricate, others are simpler, awaiting the addition of reader's own embellishments and creativity. Miriam Weme has loved horses since she was a little girl. Creating the mandalas featured in this book was a profoundly comforting and inspirational experience for her, and she hopes readers/artists interacting with the book will have the same experience as they color them in and make them their own. Whether horse enthusiast, budding artist, adult or child, this coloring and design book gives readers an opportunity to bring out colored pencils and paints and let these unique mandalas take them on a wonderful journey!

Book Synopsis Japanese Mandalas by : Elizabeth ten Grotenhuis
Download or read book Japanese Mandalas written by Elizabeth ten Grotenhuis and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 1998-11-01 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first broad study of Japanese mandalas to appear in a Western language, this volume interprets mandalas as sanctified realms where identification between the human and the sacred occurs. The author investigates eighth- to seventeenth-century paintings from three traditions: Esoteric Buddhism, Pure Land Buddhism, and the kami-worshipping (Shinto) tradition. It is generally recognized that many of these mandalas are connected with texts and images from India and the Himalayas. A pioneering theme of this study is that, in addition to the South Asian connections, certain paradigmatic Japanese mandalas reflect pre-Buddhist Chinese concepts, including geographical concepts. In convincing and lucid prose, ten Grotenhuis chronicles an intermingling of visual, doctrinal, ritual, and literary elements in these mandalas that has come to be seen as characteristic of the Japanese religious tradition as a whole. This beautifully illustrated work begins in the first millennium B.C.E. in China with an introduction to the Book of Documents and ends in present-day Japan at the sacred site of Kumano. Ten Grotenhuis focuses on the Diamond and Womb World mandalas of Esoteric Buddhist tradition, on the Taima mandala and other related mandalas from the Pure Land Buddhist tradition, and on mandalas associated with the kami-worshipping sites of Kasuga and Kumano. She identifies specific sacred places in Japan with sacred places in India and with Buddhist cosmic diagrams. Through these identifications, the realm of the buddhas is identified with the realms of the kami and of human beings, and Japanese geographical areas are identified with Buddhist sacred geography. Explaining why certain fundamental Japanese mandalas look the way they do and how certain visual forms came to embody the sacred, ten Grotenhuis presents works that show a complex mixture of Indian Buddhist elements, pre-Buddhist Chinese elements, Chinese Buddhist elements, and indigenous Japanese elements.

Book Synopsis Spells, Images, and Mandalas by : Koichi Shinohara
Download or read book Spells, Images, and Mandalas written by Koichi Shinohara and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2014-08-05 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Koichi Shinohara traces the evolution of Esoteric Buddhist rituals from the simple recitation of spells in the fifth century to complex systems involving image worship, mandala initiation, and visualization practices in the ninth century. He presents an important new reading of a seventh-century Chinese text called the Collected Dharani Sutras, which shows how earlier rituals for specific deities were synthesized into a general Esoteric initiation ceremony and how, for the first time, the notion of an Esoteric Buddhist pantheon emerged. In the Collected Dharani Sutras, rituals for specific deities were typically performed around images of the deities, yet Esoteric Buddhist rituals in earlier sources involved the recitation of spells rather than the use of images. The first part of this study explores how such simpler rituals came to be associated with the images of specific deities and ultimately gave rise to the general Esoteric initiation ceremony described in the crucial example of the All-Gathering mandala ritual in the Collected Dharani Sutras. The visualization practices so important to later Esoteric Buddhist rituals were absent from this ceremony, and their introduction would fundamentally change Esoteric Buddhist practice. This study examines the translations of dharani sutras made by Bodhiruci in the early eighth century and later Esoteric texts, such as Yixing's commentary on the Mahavairocana sutra and Amoghavajra's ritual manuals, to show how incorporation of visualization greatly enriched Esoteric rituals and helped develop elaborate iconographies for the deities. Over time, the ritual function of images became less certain, and the emphasis shifted toward visualization. This study clarifies the complex relationship between images and ritual, changing how we perceive Esoteric Buddhist art as well as ritual.
