Book Synopsis A Visual Guide to Rocks and Minerals by : Diana Malizia
Download or read book A Visual Guide to Rocks and Minerals written by Diana Malizia and published by The Rosen Publishing Group, Inc. This book was released on 2017-12-15 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By studying rocks, we can reconstruct the history of the earth. Even the most insignificant rocks can tell stories about other times because rocks have been around since the beginning of the universe. They provide clues about previous geological events and about what the earth's surface was like in the past. In addition, nearly all the modern products that surround us have elements provided by rocks and minerals, including aluminum cans, copper cables, and titanium spaceships. In this lavishly illustrated volume loaded with timelines, infographics, and diagrams, readers will find invaluable information about the language of rocks and will learn to identify the most important minerals, know their physical and chemical properties, and discover the environments in which they form.

Book Synopsis Remote Sensing of Volcanic Processes and Risk by : Francesca Cigna
Download or read book Remote Sensing of Volcanic Processes and Risk written by Francesca Cigna and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2021-03-17 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Remote sensing data and methods are increasingly being implemented in assessments of volcanic processes and risk. This happens thanks to their capability to provide a spectrum of observation and measurement opportunities to accurately sense the dynamics, magnitude, frequency, and impacts of volcanic activity. This book includes research papers on the use of satellite, aerial, and ground-based remote sensing to detect thermal features and anomalies, investigate lava and pyroclastic flows, predict the flow path of lahars, measure gas emissions and plumes, and estimate ground deformation. The multi-disciplinary character of the approaches employed for volcano monitoring and the combination of a variety of sensor types, platforms, and methods that come out from the papers testify to the current scientific and technology trends toward multi-data and multi-sensor monitoring solutions. The added value of the papers lies in the demonstration of how remote sensing can improve our knowledge of volcanoes that pose a threat to local communities; back-analysis and critical revision of recent volcanic eruptions and unrest periods; and improvement of modeling and prediction methods. Therefore, the selected case studies also demonstrate the societal impact that this scientific discipline can potentially have on volcanic hazard and risk management.

Book Synopsis Carbonatite Volcanism by : Keith Bell
Download or read book Carbonatite Volcanism written by Keith Bell and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the last few years, carbonatites have received a considerable amount of attention. Some of this interest was no doubt kindled by the importance of volatiles in the Earth's mantle, particularly CO , by the fact that carbonatites 2 can be used to monitor the chemical evolution of the sub-continental upper mantle, and by the fact that carbonatites may be effective metasomatizing agents at both mantle and crustal levels. The interest in Oldoinyo Lengai has extended over at least 100 years, but it was not until the eruptions of 1960, when the unique carbonatitic nature of its lavas was recognized, that the volcano took on special significance in volcanology and igneous petrology. The recognition of carbonatitic flows coin cided with the first successful laboratory experiments carried out on carbonatitic melts. Since then, Oldoinyo Lengai has formed a cornerstone in all carbonatite discussions. It is probably true to say that the findings from Oldoinyo Lengai have dominated our ideas about carbonatites, in spite of the fact that the alkali rich, natrocarbonatitic lavas of Oldoinyo Lengai are markedly different from other carbonatites.

Book Synopsis Integrating Zooarchaeology and Paleoethnobotany by : Amber VanDerwarker
Download or read book Integrating Zooarchaeology and Paleoethnobotany written by Amber VanDerwarker and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-01-22 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, scholars have emphasized the need for more holistic subsistence analyses, and collaborative publications towards this endeavor have become more numerous in the literature. However, there are relatively few attempts to qualitatively integrate zooarchaeological (animal) and paleoethnobotanical (plant) data, and even fewer attempts to quantitatively integrate these two types of subsistence evidence. Given the vastly different methods used in recovering and quantifying these data, not to mention their different preservational histories, it is no wonder that so few have undertaken this problem. Integrating Zooarchaeology and Paleoethnobotany takes the lead in tackling this important issue by addressing the methodological limitations of data integration, proposing new methods and innovative ways of using established methods, and highlighting case studies that successfully employ these methods to shed new light on ancient foodways. The volume challenges the perception that plant and animal foodways are distinct and contends that the separation of the analysis of archaeological plant and animal remains sets up a false dichotomy between these portions of the diet. In advocating qualitative and quantitative data integration, the volume establishes a clear set of methods for (1) determining the suitability of data integration in any particular case, and (2) carrying out an integrated qualitative or quantitative approach.
