This book provides the rationale and scientific basis for hormones and vitamins, which play an important role in cancer management, and emphasizes the significance of hormones and vitamins in chemoprevention and chemoprophylaxis of cancer. Topics discussed in this book include the criteria for selecting patients for hormonotherapy and vitamin therapy; the favorable effects and advantages of hormonotherapy and vitamin therapy over (or used as adjuvant therapeutic agents) more aggressive methods, such as chemotherapy, radiation therapy, immunotherapy or surgery; and hormone-like substances, such as growth factors, interferons, interleukins, and prostoglandins. Also included is the newest information regarding the role of diet in cancer prevention. This book is packed with valuable information for researchers, physicians, and students of endrocrinology and clinical oncology. It is also the only book of its kind that discusses the role of hormones, hormone-like substances, and vitamins in cancer prevention and treatment.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The series, Hormones in Health and Disease, was launched in 1993 to provide a scientific platform for investigators engaged in research on the biological actions of hormones and to anticipate relevance for their findings in clinical applications. The first volume of the series was dedicated to the discussion and understanding of molecular mechanisms by which steroid hormones influence target cells in normal and pathological conditions. With the diversity of information and the vast amount of literature on steroid hormone physiology, a more thorough treatment of Hormones and Cancer was identified as a timely topic. In this second volume in the series, Dr. Wayne V. Vedeckis has success fully undertaken the monumental task of editing the findings of the leading investigators in hormone and cancer research. Dr. Vedeckis brings to this project two decades of research experience in hormone action; he is actively engaged in elucidating hormone and cancer interrelations. It is a pleasure to welcome him to the series as an editor and congratulate him and all contribu tors in presenting this comprehensive treatise. The 20 chapters include discussions on contemporary topics relating control of cell division and signal transduction to the basic mechanisms of carcinogenesis by cloning patient genes, and recognizing the importance of steroid receptors in treatment protocols of various endocrine abnormalities.

Book excerpt: The clinical benefits of hormone replacement therapy in women have to be carefully balanced against the possible risks, and a particular theoretical concern relates to risks associated with various forms of female oncology. Because of conflicting reports, gynecologists and oncologists especially need a single, authoritative resource of up-to-date information. Hormone Replacement Therapy and Cancer, published in association with the International Menopause Society, provides the very consensus statement that clinicians need in this difficult and complex area. Many of the world's leading specialists have contributed important chapters that provide state-of-the-art knowledge about the effects of hormones on women and possible cancer risks. The introductory section deals with carcinogenesis, and the other main sections cover HRT and breast cancer, endometrial cancer, colon cancer, melanoma and epithelial ovarian cancer. The concluding chapters discuss the benefits and risks of sp ecific therapies. An authoritative clinical reference with extensive bibliographic references and index, Hormone Replacement Therapy and Cancer covers all aspects of HRT and cancer based on the research available up to June 2001.

Book excerpt: Nutrients in Cancer Prevention and Treatment contains articles that were presented by leading researchers and physicians in the field of nutritional oncology. Most of the previous conference proceedings on Nutrition and Cancer have dealt primarily with the issue of the role of nutrients in cancer prevention. This is logical because enormous quantities of laboratory and epi demiologic data have been published on the topic. Nutrients in Cancer Prevention and Treatment also contains several studies on the role of diet and vitamins in cancer treat ment. There are very few books that have reviewed laboratory and clinical studies and the role of vitamins in cancer treatment. There are preliminary data suggesting that daily supplementa tion with high doses of certain vitamins in combination with conventional therapeutic agents may enhance their growth inhibitory effects on tumor cells, and may protect normal tissues against some of their toxic effects. This book is unique in the sense that several articles have discussed the mechanisms of action of individual vitamins on cellular and molecular parameters. It is very exciting to note that some of the vitamins inhibit protein kinase C activity, increase the production of certain growth factors, and modulate the expression of a number of oncogenes. These studies, at least in part, offer rationales for the cancer protective effects of vitamins.

Book excerpt: Through epidemical studies, it is known that Asian men, whose diets are high in soy products, have a much lower incident of hormone-dependent disease such as prostate cancer. Vitamins are essential for normal metabolism, growth, development and general health. Recent research has shown that vitamins might have important roles in cancer prevention or even treatment as antioxidants and hormones. This study was designed to investigate the effect of the vitamin E, soy isoflavones and a combination of the two on PC-3 prostate cancer cells in vivo and in vitro. For the in vivo studies, 24 nude mice were injected with PC-3 cells and randomly assigned to 1 of 4 diets including; control, high vitamin E, high soy-isoflavone, and high soy-isoflavone high vitamin E. There were no significant differences in tumor growth between the groups in the study. For the in vitro studies, PC-3 cells were treated with various concentrations of soy isoflavones, vitamin E (alpha-Tocopherol) alone or in combination. Cell proliferation was then measured using 3H-Thymidine Incorporation Assays. Unexpectedly, the isoflavones increased cell proliferation of PC-3 cells, especially at the higher concentrations; however, both vitamin E and isoflavone genistein in combination with vitamin E reduced PC-3 proliferation at concentrations of 10-5 M. In conclusion, these results suggest that vitamin E alone or in combination with the soy isoflavone genistein may prove to be a potential dietary therapy for prostate cancer. However, the observation that soy isoflavones alone do not reduce PC-3 growth in vitro or in vivo, and stimulate proliferation in vitro requires further investigation and raises some concerns over the use of soy in the treatment prostate cancer.

Book excerpt: This volume is the newest release in the authoritative series of quantitative estimates of nutrient intakes to be used for planning and assessing diets for healthy people. Dietary Reference Intakes (DRIs) is the newest framework for an expanded approach developed by U.S. and Canadian scientists. This book discusses in detail the role of vitamin C, vitamin E, selenium, and the carotenoids in human physiology and health. For each nutrient the committee presents what is known about how it functions in the human body, which factors may affect how it works, and how the nutrient may be related to chronic disease. Dietary Reference Intakes provides reference intakes, such as Recommended Dietary Allowances (RDAs), for use in planning nutritionally adequate diets for different groups based on age and gender, along with a new reference intake, the Tolerable Upper Intake Level (UL), designed to assist an individual in knowing how much is "too much" of a nutrient.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about Nutraceuticals in cancer therapy, specifically targeted and Adjuvant therapy. It shows several approaches for possibly reducing systemic toxicity. This book illustrates the role of several dietary agents, collectively called nutraceuticals or natural agents in the prevention and/or treatment of human malignancies known to be mediated through alterations in multiple molecular targets. This book contains sixteen chapters which begin with historical perspective on the value of natural agents in the prevention of human malignancies followed by a series of current topics on multiple nutraceuticals targeting multiple cancers. This collection would likely be useful for bringing newer generations with broader perspectives in launching cutting-edge innovative molecular research, which would certainly help in designing targeted clinical trials in order to realize the dream of customize strategies for the prevention and/or treatment of human malignancies without causing any systemic toxicity. Moreover, the knowledge gained would allow novel utilization of nutraceuticals as adjunct to both conventional chemotherapy and radiation therapy in order to improve the overall quality of life and survival of patients diagnosed with cancers.
