Book excerpt: In the Revelation Jesus speaks directly to John: "Write the things which thou hast seen, and the things which are, and the things which shall be hereafter;" The Revelation is not about "the things that were" or the past, at the time it was written. If this book is primarily about the future from the time of John receiving the Revelation, then we must consider that much of the things which shall be hereafter having commenced shortly thereafter, would now, in our time, 1900 years later, have already happened over that span of time, and can be found in history. The first three chapters of the Revelation relate to the things which are, at the time of writing by St. John. The epistles should be read and understood by the plain reading of the text. Chapters four and five concern things otherworldly: a glimpse into the heavenly realm and the drama about unsealing the book of future things. Chapters six through nineteen concern the future history unsealed by the Lamb or Jesus, the things which shall be Hereafter. It is explicitly stated that it is about "things which must shortly come to pass" - future things which would begin, or commence almost immediately upon the completion of the Revelation to St. John. Historicism is the method of interpretation that actually developed out of the Protestant Reformation, that is the reason why, to quote one critic, the "view was so widely held, that for a long time it was called the Protestant view." That alone should pique interest to a deeper study of the view. The Council of Trent and Counter-Reformation has been most instrumental and very successful in suppressing this Protestant view for the past two centuries, so much so that it can be easily ridiculed even by so-called Protestants, who have forgotten why they are called protestant, if ever they even knew or considered the meaning of the Reformed Protest Against the Biblical and Historical Antichrist. This edition brings the nearly 170 years of history that has followed E. B. Elliot's 5th edition into view with updates and revisions necessary to the same method of interpretation employed by the original work, with what conclusions we believe the original author would have come to if he could have seen what history has unfolded since.

To crystallize the subject matter and make the historical facts live in modem times, the author also made extensive travels throughout Europe and Asia. The doctrines of the primitive Christian church spread to Ireland, Scotland, and Wales. As grains of a mustard seed they lodged in the hearts of many Godly souls in southern France and northern Italy — people known as the Albigenses and the Waldenses. The faith of Jesus was valiantly upheld by the Church of the East. This term, as used by the author, not only includes the Syrian and Assyrian Churches, but is also the term applied to the development of apostolic Christianity throughout the lands of the East. The spirit of Christ, burning in the hearts of loyal men who would not compromise with paganism, sent them forth as missionaries to lands afar. Patrick, Columbanus, Marcos, and a host of others were missionaries to distant lands. They braved the ignorance of the barbarian, the intolerance of the apostate church leaders, and the persecution of the state in order that they might win souls to God. To unfold the dangers that were ever present in the conflict of the true church against error, to reveal the sinister working of evil and the divine strength by which men of God made truth triumphant, to challenge the Remnant Church today in its final controversy against the powers of evil, and to show the holy, unchanging message of the Bible as it has been preserved for t hose who will “fear God, and keep His commandments” — these are the sincere aims of the author as he presents this book to those who know the truth. Early in the church's history speculation grew up around the text - Revelation 11:3-13 - depicting two witnesses, or prophets, who preach at the end of history against the beast from the abyss, the epitome of evil, called Antichrist. Different interpretive methodologies have discovered different meanings in the text, and a symbolic value for political or ecclesial reform has been identified with it throughout the history of its use. The witnesses have been linked to a time of culminating evil, to the final proclamation of hope, and to the end of history associated with divine judgment. Such speculation found ample expression in medieval literature, art, and drama. In the writings of reformers, however, the story acquired increased social implications. The text of the Apocalypse came to lend visionary strength to Protestant piety, polity, and political activity, and the adventual witnesses became increasingly visible in Protestant polemics. Anglo-American commentators, in particular, have used the text both for self-identity and as part of a formula for plotting the onset of Christ's millennial reign. Tracing the history of how the Apocalypse was read, Preaching in the Last Days sheds light on how social groups are formed through ideas occasioned by texts. Petersen's study provides a fascinating look at the theological significance of how we read biblical texts and offers new insights on the development of culture, the Christian movement, and its churches.
