Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Born in 1948, Sheila Cornett grew up in a time when almost everyone’s father had served in the Second World War. Like many veterans of that conflict, her own father did not talk about his wartime experiences. Six decades later and after her mother’s death, Sheila discovered her father’s letters to his future wife, Marjory, written during the five and a half years he served with the Royal Canadian Artillery In Hoping to Hear from You Soon: Canadian War Letters, 1940–1945, Don Cornett describes what life is like for many servicemen in the Canadian Army at the time. From a training camp in Ontario to several more years of training in the UK, and then to the battlefields of northwest Europe, Don’s journey is very different from what he’d imagined on enlisting. He learns quickly that army life involves lengthy periods of idleness. Stationed in the UK, he complains that “month after month, we do next to nothing” and “our existence over here seems so utterly futile.” Writing with candour and insight, he critiques Canada’s political leadership and finds it wanting; discusses current affairs and the progress of the war; and expounds his views on bureaucracy within the army. After disembarking in Normandy, Don’s endurance is tested in new ways. Soon he is transferred to the Fourth Field Regiment to command a battery. He is mentioned in despatches. He tells Marjory “it’s pretty hard to find the time [to write] when we’re busy fighting.” Those days of idleness are long gone.

Union soldiers described southern women as defi ant, beautiful, crude, and pitiful. Read of women aboard blockade-runners, the fall of Wilmington, Sherman’s march, Stoneman’s western raiders, and the end of the war. Did any civilians die due to these raids? Did they idly sit by as their lives and homes were destroyed? The war did come to their doorstep during the second half of the confl ict. Both Volume I and II tell something from each of the state’s 87 counties. Perhaps you may fi nd information about your ancestor among these pages. Information from period newspapers, as well as mostly unpublished letters, tell their stories.

Book excerpt: Some might say we are what we inherit. Others may suggest that one ought to ponder over where we come from, claiming that it serves as a moral compass and guides us on our journey through life. Our lives would scarcely be interesting if we were able to predict the details of our destination. Instead one should savour the experiences and embrace the journey. Amelia Binneman was a farmer's daughter, a Boer woman whose light shone brightly. From the outset she had a clear perception of the life she wanted, a life etched in her dreams and expectations. One night of passion during her final year at school changed everything. All the dreams she had and the pledges she ever made, were in jeopardy. It prompted her into leaving the Cape Colony and joining her parents on a journey to Springfontein, a remote village in the Republic of the Orange Free State, where they began farming. The story is told against the background of the Anglo Boer War in 1899 and describes Amelia's journey of survival, taken by women and children. It tells of the gold rush on the Witwatersrand and how the leaders chose war while grasping at greed, allowing the option of peace to pass them by. It explores the lives of ordinary people who were caught up in the turmoil of this war, some of whom were incarcerated in refugee camps. It tells of an intrepid group of people, who abandoned their farm to escape the dominance of the British, and who were given refuge by a Koranna tribe in a settlement near the Basotholand border. It is here that Amelia meets the benevolent Chief Thaba and the intimidating Pulani, a sangoma with whom she forges a relationship and discovers a remarkable cure for one of the many ailments that ravaged the lives of children during the war. After learning that her mother Helena and companion Mieta were captured and relocated to a new camp at Norvals Pont, Amelia and her son Daniel attempt a daring mission to rescue them. The story describes the events that led Amelia's father Christoffel Binneman, to assist Generals De la Rey, De Wet and others, before they assembled at Melrose House in Pretoria on the 31st May 1902, to sign the Peace Treaty of Vereeniging. It describes the futility of this war.

Book excerpt: This memoir of a man who was instrumental in shaping the vibrant Five Points neighborhood that is now Denver’s only Historic Cultural District begins with his roots. His parents fled the Jim Crow laws of Texas on an eight-month 1903 wagon train into Indian Territory where Leroy Smith was born in the oldest black town of what had by then become Oklahoma. His personal “Great Migration” began when he walked across the border into Arkansas. Working and vagabonding his way northeast to be rescued when he received a bus ticket from a friend who suggested he come west to Utah for a decent job on the railway. Working the trains, Leroy was drawn to Denver which he had learned was the “Harlem of the West.” There he met Lulu Ann Green, convinced her in a whirlwind courtship to marry and join him as a partner in a tiny shop they rented for ten dollars a month. Leroy bought black newspapers, hair products and vinyl music on his Chicago train runs that Lulu sold to Denver’s fast growing black population. By 1941 Leroy could quit the railroad to create the “Rhythm Record Shop” in a two-story building he purchased in the busy Wellton Street business district known as “The Points.” In 1944 he held his first dance concert which his ingenuity handily saved from disaster and began booking the great names of rock and roll, rhythm and blues, gospel, jazz, etc. to cities in Colorado and surrounding states. Often referred to as “the Mayor of Five Points,” he was known as a cool band leader who sold “race music,” black hair products and quality goods within the “red lines.” Smith was also a gifted sportsman who hunted, fished, and pitched on black baseball teams. He soon added the words “and Sporting Goods” to the already expanded merchandise found in his shop, offering fishing and hunting licenses with gear. He became Colorado’s first black outfitter licensed to sell firearms with his sports equipment. He was named an honorary game warden and—after lobbying for an officer-manned lockup only three doors away—an honorary police officer. An audacious masonic leader, Leroy fought city hall to bring black Shiners to his ingeniously desegregated Denver hotels for conventions. He paid to advertise his ventures on the radio by becoming, his own disc jockey on his midnight “Rockin’ with Leroy” show. His sharp instincts for enterprise and entertainment lifted him into business, cultural, mining, and other endeavors that inspired the diverse neighborhood to action. His political inclinations led him to success in opening the second floor of his building as the Voters Club, a swinging night club with live music and famed visitors which he used to rally African Americans to vote and fight for their American civil rights. All proceeds from sale of this scrapbook of photos, letters and memories are destined solely for the support of Denver’s Black American West Museum & Heritage Center.

Book excerpt: Dear Uncle Oscar… I’m going to put a note on the back of our book to explain to readers what our correspondence inside is all about. It goes like this... A hundred years ago a German shell dropped on Pte. Oscar French on Vimy Ridge and ended his adventures in the First World War. A century later author Orland French replies to Oscar’s real letters home to his mother and tells him, in his own sardonic style, how the world turned out after the horrific War to End All Wars. Letters to Vimy is an excellent and highly entertaining personal guide to the birth and growth of Canadian nationalism out of that victory at Vimy. Sources abounded for this project, including a memorable conversation with a group of elderly German tourists on the steps of the Vimy Monument. Your nephew in history, Orland French

Book excerpt: Voices of the Left Behind contains the personal stories of nearly 50 Canadian war children who have been helped by Project Roots. It is filled with fascinating archival images and documents as well as original wartime correspondence between the mothers, the Canadian fathers, and the Department of National Defence, Veterans Affairs, and other Canadian institutions. Letters from the war children to the Military Personnel Records Unit of the National Archives of Canada illustrate the historic pattern of denial. What these institutions all have in common is their consistent refusal to help war children find their Canadian fathers. Introductory essays frame the subject and give a historical context to the tragic situations these women and their children found themselves in.
