Book excerpt: The cowboy's name was Bill "Hopalong" Cassidy (a nickname received after being shot in the leg) --- and he was a mid-20th Century star of radio, movies, television, and of course comic books. William Boyd played Hopalong in the movies and TV, and even bought the rights to the character himself. Hopalong was known as a fair-minded, even-handed, sarsaparilla-drinking cowboy who often appeared when honest people were being taken advantage of by crooks, con-men, and other evil-minded people. The comic book series began in the late 1940's and ran through the early 1950s -the peak of Hoppy's popularity. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hopalong Cassidy In this western from Clarence E. Mulford, Jim Meeker came down from Montana to run Texas cattle--only to find that Hoppy's Bar-20 ran the water. So when a trio of snake-mean rustlers started themselves a cattle war, the powder was primed, the guns cocked, and Hoppy was smack in the middle. Friend against friend, brother against brother, gun against blazing gun. And time's running out. Bar-20 Days Cassidy could fan a gun like Billy the Kid. Six rounds in three seconds was his slowest time. No one in Texas could beat him...until he met Slim Travennes, head of the Sandy Creek Vigilante Committee. Slim was snake-fast. None could go up against him and live. Hoppy could stand or die. He had no other choice. This edition of the book is the deluxe, tall rack mass market paperback.

Book Synopsis Branding the American West by : Marian Wardle
Download or read book Branding the American West written by Marian Wardle and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 2016-02-17 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Artists and filmmakers in the early twentieth century reshaped our vision of the American West. In particular, the Taos Society of Artists and the California-based artist Maynard Dixon departed from the legendary depiction of the “Wild West” and fostered new images, or brands, for western art. This volume, illustrated with more than 150 images, examines select paintings and films to demonstrate how these artists both enhanced and contradicted earlier representations of the West. Prior to this period, American art tended to portray the West as a wild frontier with untamed lands and peoples. Renowned artists such as Henry Farny and Frederic Remington set their work in the past, invoking an environment immersed in conflict and violence. This trademark perspective began to change, however, when artists enamored with the Southwest stamped a new imprint on their paintings. The contributors to this volume illuminate the complex ways in which early-twentieth-century artists, as well as filmmakers, evoked a southwestern environment not just suspended in time but also permanent rather than transient. Yet, as the authors also reveal, these artists were not entirely immune to the siren call of the vanishing West, and their portrayal of peaceful yet “exotic” Native Americans was an expansion rather than a dismissal of earlier tropes. Both brands cast a romantic spell on the West, and both have been seared into public consciousness. Branding the American West is published in association with the Brigham Young University Museum of Art, Provo, Utah, and the Stark Museum of Art, Orange, Texas.

Book Synopsis Ladies of the Western by : Michael G. Fitzgerald
Download or read book Ladies of the Western written by Michael G. Fitzgerald and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2015-08-01 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work features interviews with 51 leading ladies who starred in B-westerns, A-westerns, and television westerns. Some were well-known and others were not, but they all have fascinating stories to tell and they talk candidly about their careers and the many difficulties that went along with their jobs. Back then, conditions were often severe, locations were often harsh, and pay was often minimal. The actresses were sometimes the only females on location and they had to provide their own wardrobe and do their own make-up, as well as discourage the advances of over-affectionate co-stars. Despite these difficulties, most of the women interviewed for this agree that they had fun. Claudia Barrett, Virginia Carroll, Francis Dee, Lisa Gaye, Marie Harmon, Kathleen Hughes, Linda Johnson, Ruta Lee, Colleen Miller, Gigi Perreau, Ann Rutherford, Ruth Terry, and June Vincent are among the 51 actresses interviewed.

Book Synopsis The Fountainheads by : Donald Leslie Johnson
Download or read book The Fountainheads written by Donald Leslie Johnson and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2005-01-01 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Speculation abounds about the relationship between Frank Lloyd Wright and Ayn Rand. Was Wright the inspiration for Howard Roark, the architect hero of Rand's The Fountainhead? What can be made of their collaboration on the book's failed 1944 movie adaptation, and what can be gleaned from the 1949 Hollywood production of The Fountainhead? Where does the FBI--Wright was dubbed a communist sympathizer, and Rand was called before the House Un-American Activities Committee--fit into the story? Art, architecture, philosophy, film and politics come together in this exploration, which relies on the writings of Wright and Rand, FBI files, visual evidence and more to cement their connection. Chapters are devoted to Wright and Rand, the two together, their parts in both the failed production of The Fountainhead and the successful one, and the effect FBI harassment had on the movie and on their lives. Subsequent chapters discuss Wright's place as a Hollywood architect, and offer telling set designs and architectural images from the 1949 production of The Fountainhead. Several appendices supplement the illustrated text, and there is a filmography of movies mentioned in the book. A bibliography and index are also included.

Book Synopsis Filmed Television Drama, 1952-1958 by : William Hawes
Download or read book Filmed Television Drama, 1952-1958 written by William Hawes and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2001-12-26 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work examines the change from live to filmed television dramas during the period 1952-1958 and the characteristics and programs that are most associated with filmed television drama. Along with many technical changes that had to be made in the industry in order to convert live television to filmed television came an interesting social one. The American society in general was developing a growing interest in the lives of ordinary people, and television moved with them, offering more programs that concentrated on the middle and lower classes. Because of the inherent qualities of filming, television began to feature more documentary-like realism, began to broaden its interpretation of traditional romantic escapism to include more outer space and supernatural science fiction, began to better fulfill materialistic desires through well-designed, enjoyable commercials, and began to offer the best dramas and most popular personalities, often leading viewers to greater self-appreciation and richer lives. This work focuses on the important anthology programs and specials that were on the air from 1952 to 1958 such as Kraft Television Theatre, Philco Television Playhouse, and The Hallmark Hall of Fame, filmed serials like Colgate Theatre, Amos 'n' Andy, and I Love Lucy, and the challenges of converting from live to filmed television drama.
