Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ever since the Canadian prairies were first settled and the Mounties marched west to establish and maintain law and order, the names of individual officers have left their mark on the national landscape. Their long tradition has been honoured in many of the place names of Canada, especially in the West. In this collection, over 250 of the NWMP, RNWMP and RCMP members who died while on duty, or who enjoyed long or extraordinary careers, are remembered. Other place names are connected to a Mountie-related event or were named by a pioneering Mountie in honour of some significant occurrence. Authors William "Bill" Hulgaard and John "Jack" White, both retired Mounties, extended their research across Canada to compile the information for Honoured in Places.

Book excerpt: This powerful book helps teachers redefine an inclusive curriculum by questioning what is taught, how it is taught, to whom, and under what conditions. It offers teachers a wealth of challenging, open-ended pursuits that give students "voice" and help them better understand their world. It explores opportunities for students to connect with social justice issues in the real world through imagined experiences found in short stories, novels, plays, picture books, graphic novels, and primary source documents, such as letters.

He longs for a relationship like the ones his buddies have, but, after his girlfriend of three years dumps him just when he thinks they're solid, he struggles to believe it's possible. He's invited to a backyard barbecue at Mason's house, where he meets up with the spitfire he's met before and knows won't give an inch. Warrick is intrigued, even though the she-devil won't stop arguing long enough to get to know her. Penny Magnus loves her job as a clerk in the medical insurance offices, but trying to get stubborn men to fill out a few forms properly isn't her idea of a good time. With a fiery personality, Penny's open to starting a new romance but absolutely not with a difficult man, even if he is gorgeous. Her best friend got herself in an ugly relationship and had to ask Penny for help in escaping him. Now, just when Penny and Warrick are calming down enough to actually connect, her friend's boyfriend contacts her. He blames Penny for the mess she created when she tore the love of his life from him. He goes on a rampage, targeting Penny--only he's thwarted by one big, badass warrior standing firmly in his way, protecting her. Book excerpt: In this stimulating investigation, Gideon Freudenthal has linked social history with the history of science by formulating an interesting proposal: that the supposed influence of social theory may be seen as actual through its co herence with the process of formation of physical concepts. The reinterpre tation of the development of science in the seventeenth century, now widely influential, receives at Freudenthal's hand its most persuasive statement, most significantly because of his attention to the theoretical form which is charac teristic. of classical Newtonian mechanics. He pursues the sources of the parallels that may be noted between that mechanics and the dominant philosophical systems and social theories of the time; and in a fascinating development Freudenthal shows how a quite precise method - as he descriptively labels it, the 'analytic-synthetic method' - which underlay the Newtonian form of theoretical argument, was due to certain interpretive premisses concerning particle mechanics. If he is right, these depend upon a particular stage of con ceptual achievement in the theories of both society and nature; further, that the conceptual was generalized philosophically; but, strikingly, Freudenthal shows that this concept-formation itself was linked to the specific social relations of the times of Newton and Hobbes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Universities are more than engines propelling us into a bold new future. They are also living history. A college campus serves as a repository for the memories of countless students, staff, and faculty who have passed through its halls. The history of a university resides not just in its archives but also in the place itself—the walkways and bridges, the libraries and classrooms, the gardens and creeks winding their way across campus. To think of Emory as place, as Hauk invites you to do, is not only to consider its geography and its architecture (the lay of the land and the built-up spaces its people inhabit) but also to imagine how the external, constructed world can cultivate an internal world of wonder and purpose and responsibility—in short, how a landscape creates meaning. Emory as Place offers physical, though mute, evidence of how landscape and population have shaped each other over decades of debate about architecture, curriculum, and resources. More than that, the physical development of the place mirrors the university’s awareness of itself as an arena of tension between the past and the future—even between the past and the present, between what the university has been and what it now purports or intends to be, through its spaces. Most of all, thinking of Emory as place suggests a way to get at the core meaning of an institution as large, diverse, complex, and tentacled as a modern research university.

Book excerpt: In the rugged expanse of West Texas, a timeless tale of love, loyalty, deception, and redemption unfolds against the backdrop of the early 1900s Texas Panhandle. Meet Trent Sanderson, a man as striking as the untamed landscapes he commands, dedicated to his sprawling ranch and the loyal cowboys who tend to it. Within the bounds of the ranch, respect is earned, and trust is sacred—except when it comes to the women in his life. Helen, once a vibrant spirit, now confined to a wheelchair, will do anything to protect Trent from unsuitable, money-hungry women, even if it means weaving a web of lies. Flossy seeks to ensnare Trent in her web of desire. But when her intentions turn to marriage, Helen's lies spiral out of control. Sassy, a sweet young woman with a secret past, resorts to deceit when Trent questions her about his personal life. Her prayers for forgiveness echo through the vast prairie. Patsy, the pretty teacher, and Angel, Trent's younger sister, also harbor secrets, further complicating the tangled web of deception that surrounds Trent. Trent's world is shaken in the wake of a devastating tornado, testing the limits of his strength and love. As he faces the aftermath, he questions his own feelings and seeks the elusive truth of genuine love. As secrets unravel and hearts collide, Trent's journey toward authenticity takes center stage as honor clashes with love. Publisher’s Note: Readers who savor heartfelt tales of life, faith, and romance will not want to miss this endearing series set in early 1900s West Texas, where the struggles and joys of a bygone era come to life.
