From its beginnings in a lone building in Tehuacana to its roots today in the heart of San Antonio, Trinity’s story is one of resilience, ambition, and success. Founded with the vision to create a new university of the highest order, Trinity’s commitment to innovative learning and enterprise have transformed challenge into opportunity and shaped the university into the esteemed private liberal arts and sciences institution it is today. Early entrepreneurs such as the Munger brothers and Marrs McLean paved the way for the current entrepreneurship program and Stumberg competitions. Forward-thinking programs such as the Office of Experiential Learning, the Student Success Center, and the Collaborative for Learning and Teaching also supplement Trinity’s twenty-five academic departments. Trinity University reflects on all these stories and documents the institution’s vision for what a liberal arts education can become.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although science has unlocked the secrets of the human genome, the causes of social and economic development remain stubbornly enigmatic. Why do some countries adopt new technologies more readily than others? Why does income inequality persist in some regions--even in the face of rapid economic growth? Why do some societies welcome the challenges of globalization while others attempt to turn back the tide? Honoring the Past, Building the Future examines these and many related questions through the experience of Latin America and the Caribbean. In an accessible, journalistic style, author Ricardo Ávila explores a tumultuous half-century in which the region went from backwater to breadbasket, from dictatorship to democracy, and from economic basket case to emerging power.

Set in the decaying city of Veridia, a small group of survivors band together, each bringing unique skills and stories of loss to the collective fight for survival. Led by the determined James Holloway, the group faces relentless daily challenges—from scavenging for food and water to defending themselves against both the hostile environment and marauding groups. As they navigate this brutal landscape, the group learns that survival requires more than just endurance—it demands unity, resilience, and the courage to fight back. They decide to organize a resistance against the marauders, a decision that leads to strategic alliances with other survivor groups. Together, they form a fragile network aimed at reclaiming some semblance of security and hope in a world dominated by chaos. As their resistance efforts intensify, the group faces internal conflicts and moral dilemmas, questioning the cost of their fight. Yet, amid the loss and despair, they find moments of hope and purpose, driving them to continue their struggle for a future worth living for. This second installment in the series deepens the emotional and physical journey of the characters, exploring themes of leadership, community, and the enduring strength of the human spirit in the face of overwhelming odds. Book excerpt: The relations between the two states and societies have been rather complex during both the previous half-century and beyond. Embedded in changing political landscapes, the ramifications reach back to the early 19th century. Yet the uniqueness of the relationship network only shows in light of the wholesale murder of Jews in Europe, the creation of the State of Israel, the discussions surrounding the initiation of diplomatic relations and their arrangement until the present day. The development and intensity of the relations with regard to civil society and politics are quite astonishing when considering the beginnings. Approaches, changes and the in part greatly-varying perceptions of the other side can be observed over the course of 50 years of history, and these give rise to questions concerning the current state of the relationship and its future design.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the post-Civil War period, Southern women slowly shook loose from the longstanding image of the lady on the pedestal and, through club work and group association, developed independence and began to affect public life. One such notable new woman was Charleston's Susan Pringle Frost (1873-1960). This book recounts the life story of this active woman, describing her background, philosophy, and accomplishments in the area of advancing the image of the woman in society. A member of an illustrious old family, Frost constantly challenged convention, as a federal district court stenographer, as a real estate woman with an office in the professional district, as a women's rights advocate. She helped get women admitted to the College of Charleston and headed city and state National Woman's Party efforts to achieve women's suffrage and later, the Equal Rights Amendment. Bland asserts that Frost is chiefly important, however, as an historic preservationist. In a rapidly expanding sweep, beginning about 1909, Miss Frost bought and renovated numerous houses in the historic East Battery ristrict. Indebtedness mounted, and to aid her efforts she founded and for many years headed the Preservation Society of Charleston. On several Charleston civic commissions and, in her seventies, still a member of the Zoning Board, Susan Frost was a life-long worker for city betterment and tirelessly monitored Charleston preservation efforts. Preserving Charleston's Past, Shaping Its Future shows how a preservation pioneer, Susan Pringle Frost, helped shape the Southern new woman image and served as a role model for women of all generations.

He was born in Johannesburg, received his early education at Parktown Boys' High School and studied at Witwatersrand University and Cambridge University where he completed his doctorate. In 1958, he joined the Department of Applied Economics at Cambridge. During this period, other notable economic historians such as Phyllis Deane and W. A. Cole were hard at work, extending data series on the UK economy back into previous centuries. In 1972, Feinstein published his magnum opus, National Income, Expenditure and Output of the United Kingdom, 1855-1965, which has since come to be seen as the standard reference work on UK economic data for the period. The Times said of this book:Although Feinstein undertook many more investigations, this was perhaps his crowning achievement. Of the several similar projects undertaken in different countries, for example the American, Canadian, Australian and German initiatives, it is fair to say that the one that Feinstein brought into being was the most elegantly reasoned, organised and presented. It was all the more remarkable for being the work largely of one man. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How did we get here? Three-and-a-half-day school weeks. Prisoners farmed out to the mainland. Tent camps for the migratory homeless. A blinkered dependence on tourism and the military for virtually all economic activity. The steady degradation of already degraded land. Contempt for anyone employed in education, health, and social service. An almost theological belief in the evil of taxes. At a time when new leaders will be elected, and new solutions need to be found, the contributors to The Value of Hawai‘i outline the causes of our current state and offer points of departure for a Hawai‘i-wide debate on our future. The brief essays address a wide range of topics—education, the environment, Hawaiian issues, media, tourism, political culture, law, labor, economic planning, government, transportation, poverty—but the contributors share a belief that taking stock of where we are right now, what we need to change, and what we need to remember is a challenge that all of us must meet. Written for a general audience, The Value of Hawai‘i provides a cluster of starting points for a larger community discussion of Hawai‘i that should extend beyond the choices of the ballot box this year. Book excerpt: Politics, manners, humor, sexuality, wealth, even our definitions of success are periodically renegotiated based on the new values society chooses to use as a lens to judge what is acceptable. Are these new values randomly chosen or is there a pattern? Pendulum chronicles the stuttering history of western society; that endless back-and-forth swing between one excess and another, always reminded of what we left behind. There is a pattern and it is 40 years: 2003 was a fulcrum year, as was 1963, its opposite. Pendulum explains where we have been as a society, how we got here, and where we are headed. If you would benefit from a peek into the future, you would do well to read this book.
