Book Synopsis Catholic Missionaries in Early Modern Asia by : Nadine Amsler
Download or read book Catholic Missionaries in Early Modern Asia written by Nadine Amsler and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-10-24 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over recent decades, historians have become increasingly interested in early modern Catholic missions in Asia as laboratories of cultural contact. This book builds on recent ground-breaking research on early modern Catholic missions, which has shown that missionaries in Asia cooperated with and accommodated the needs of local agents rather than being uncompromising promoters of post-Tridentine doctrine and devotion. Bringing together some of the most renowned and innovative researchers from Anglophone countries and continental Europe, this volume investigates how missionaries’ entanglements with local societies across Asia contributed to processes of localization within the early modern Catholic church. The focus of the volume is on missionaries’ adaptation to four ideal-typical social settings that played an eminent role in early modern Asian missions: (1) the symbolically loaded princely court; (2) the city as a space of especially dense communication; (3) the countryside, where missionary presence was only rarely permanent; (4) and the household – a central arena of conversion in early modern Asian societies. Shining a fresh light onto the history of early modern Catholic missions and the early modern Eurasian cultural exchange, this will be an important book for any scholar of religious history, history of cultural contact/global history and early modern history in Asia. Book Synopsis "And Touching Our Society" by : Thomas M. McCoog
Download or read book "And Touching Our Society" written by Thomas M. McCoog and published by Studies and Texts. This book was released on 2013 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For students and scholars of Reformation, Jesuit, and Elizabethan history, Thomas M. McCoog's collection of essays encompasses a wide range of individual snapshots that collectively present a rich and nuanced panorama of the daring and often dangerous Jesuit mission in the politically and religiously charged environment of Elizabethan England. The author incorporates some of the more significant insights of the "new" historiography concerning British/Irish and Jesuit studies, as well as new historicism's contributions relating to the religious turn and integrating the voices of the silenced in our literary and historical narratives. In addition to examining important aspects of the lives and missions of major players such as Edmund Campion, Robert Persons, and Robert Southwell, McCoog also explores interesting and contested issues including the lifestyle of the missioners, the sometimes murky boundaries of Church and State, and questions about the geography and social topography of the mission. In all, these essays clarify as well as broaden our knowledge of an often misunderstood but significant chapter in both Catholic and English history. Book jacket.
Book Synopsis Francesco Benci's Quinque Martyres by : Paul G. Gwynne
Download or read book Francesco Benci's Quinque Martyres written by Paul G. Gwynne and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2018-03-06 with total page 755 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1583, five Jesuit brothers set out with the intention of founding a new church and mission in India. Their dream was almost immediately, and brutally, terminated by local opposition. When their massacre was announced in Rome, it was treated as martyrdom. Francesco Benci, professor of rhetoric at the Collegium Romanum, immediately set about celebrating their deaths in a new type of epic, distinct from, yet dependent upon, the classical tradition: Quinque martyres e Societate Iesu in India. This is the first critical edition and translation of this important text. The commentary highlights both the classical sources and the historical and religious context of the mission. The introduction outlines Benci’s career and stresses his role as the founder of this vibrant new genre. This volume is the first one for a new subseries in the 'Jesuit Studies' series: 'Jesuit Neo-Latin Library'.

Book excerpt: 'George Elison's exuberant style, his amazing polyglot skills, and his overwhelming erudition make for fascinating reading. I believe this work will be accepted as a major contribution not just to this phase of history in Japan and the history o the Christian church but also other broader and very up-to-date problems of the meeting of cultures.'
