Book Synopsis Hometown Inequality by : Brian F. Schaffner
Download or read book Hometown Inequality written by Brian F. Schaffner and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2020-07-09 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Local governments play a central role in American democracy, providing essential services such as policing, water, and sanitation. Moreover, Americans express great confidence in their municipal governments. But is this confidence warranted? Using big data and a representative sample of American communities, this book provides the first systematic examination of racial and class inequalities in local politics. We find that non-whites and less-affluent residents are consistent losers in local democracy. Residents of color and those with lower incomes receive less representation from local elected officials than do whites and the affluent. Additionally, they are much less likely than privileged community members to have their preferences reflected in local government policy. Contrary to the popular assumption that governments that are “closest” govern best, we find that inequalities in representation are most severe in suburbs and small towns. Typical reforms do not seem to improve the situation, and we recommend new approaches.
Download or read book Home Town written by Tracy Kidder and published by Random House. This book was released on 2012-09-05 with total page 490 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this splendid book, one of America's masters of nonfiction takes us home--into Hometown, U.S.A., the town of Northampton, Massachusetts, and into the extraordinary, and the ordinary, lives that people live there. As Tracy Kidder reveals how, beneath its amiable surface, a small town is a place of startling complexity, he also explores what it takes to make a modern small city a success story. Weaving together compelling stories of individual lives, delving into a rich and varied past, moving among all the levels of Northampton's social hierarchy, Kidder reveals the sheer abundance of life contained within a town's narrow boundaries. Does the kind of small town that many Americans came from, and long for, still exist? Kidder says yes, although not quite in the form we may imagine. A book about civilization in microcosm, Home Town makes us marvel afresh at the wonder of individuality, creativity, and civic order--how a disparate group of individuals can find common cause and a code of values that transforms a place into a home. And this book makes you feel you live there.
Book Synopsis Research on Migrant Children’s Educational Choices and Fiscal Policy by : Hui Zhang
Download or read book Research on Migrant Children’s Educational Choices and Fiscal Policy written by Hui Zhang and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2021-05-20 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing from global insights and the education supply and demand theory, this book investigates migrant children’s education in China, as well as the educational financial policies, which serves as both a background and possible solutions. From a comparative perspective, the education fiscal policies regarding issues with migrant/immigrant students and inequality in the United States and Europe were first examined, before comprehensive theoretical framework is constructed to evaluate the government and public schools’ input and migrant children’s educational demand in China. Their school choices, academic performances, educational choices and impact factors from the perspectives of class, gender, society and family are then discussed in depth. By tracing back to previous fiscal policies regarding migrant children in China and local policies in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Shenzhen, the author further interrogates the existing challenges, possible strategies and solutions. This book will appeal to scholars of education economics, education policy, educational equality and those who're generally interested in Chinese education and society.

Download or read book Lu Xun Hometown written by Lu Xun and published by Rudi Publishing House. This book was released on 2018-09-07 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The books in the collection »Read Chinese with Ms. Su« are aimed at advanced Chinese learners who are in the process of reading longer texts on their own. In the autobiographical narrative Hometown, the great Chinese writer Lu Xun created two literary figures, namely the farmer's son Runtu and the "Tofu Beauty" Madame Yang, which belong to the Chinese cultural memory. The first-person narrator visits his hometown to dissolve the household of his now impoverished family. He was in a sad mood, partly because the homeland he had left more than twenty years ago was no longer that of his childhood. His friend Runtu, the radiant hero of his childhood, who now addressed him with "my master," suffered from hunger and the turmoil of war. Nevertheless, there should be hope. At least that is what the first-person narrator wishes for at the end of his journey. Hometown is a particularly lovingly told story of Lu Xun. The style is unusually gentle for this sharp-tongued critic, and the construction of the sentences more simple und fluid. This is typical of Lu Xun when he writes about the landscape and the people of his homeland. The text Hometown has approx. 5000 characters, which are initially reproduced in the book in large font size and with pinyin. The word boundaries, which are normally omitted in a Chinese text, are indicated. Below the text line you will find explanations on word meaning, grammar, etc.; at the right margin of the page you will find a summary of the paragraph. On the left pages of the book, the same text is printed in traditional Chinese characters, so that those who have learned simplified Chinese will quickly be able to understand the traditional characters with a little practice and vice versa. At the end of the book, the texts are reproduced in normal print, i. e. in smaller font size, without any other information, as they would be found in a book from mainland China or Taiwan.

Book Synopsis Racing Research, Researching Race by : France Winddance Twine
Download or read book Racing Research, Researching Race written by France Winddance Twine and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2000 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A white woman studies upper-class eighth grade girls at her alma mater on Long Island and finds a culture founded on misinformation about its own racial and class identity. A black American researcher is repeatedly assumed by many Brazilian subjects to be a domestic servant or sex worker. Racing Race, Researching Race is the first volume of its kind to explore how ideologies of race and racism intersect with nationality and gender to shape the research experience. Critical work in race studies has not adequately addressed how racial positions in the field--as inflected by nationality, gender, and age--generate numerous methodological dilemmas. Racing Research, Researching Race begins to fill this gap by infusing critical race studies with more empirical work and suggesting how a critical race perspective might improve research methodologies and outcomes. The contributors to the volume encompass a wide range of disciplinary backgrounds including anthropology, sociology, ethnic studies, women=s studies, political science, and Asian American studies.

Book Synopsis The Cross-Border Connection by : Roger Waldinger
Download or read book The Cross-Border Connection written by Roger Waldinger and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2015-01-05 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: International migration presents the human face of globalization, with consequences that make headlines throughout the world. The Cross-Border Connection addresses a paradox at the core of this phenomenon: emigrants departing one society become immigrants in another, tying those two societies together in a variety of ways. In nontechnical language, Roger Waldinger explains how interconnections between place of origin and destination are built and maintained and why they eventually fall apart. “When are immigrants ‘us’? When are they ‘them’? Waldinger implores readers to reframe the debate from a before-after dichotomy to a new transnational approach, revealing migrants to be here, there, and in-between at all stages of their migration tenure...The book’s real strength is in the elegance of the author’s argument, supported by evidence that transnationalism itself is not static but an ongoing dialectic.” —R. A. Harper, Choice “The Cross-Border Connection is to be commended for putting substance into the black box of transnationalism, offering scholars a dynamic model to account for the ebb and flow of transnationalism in the real world and yielding testable propositions about the circumstances under which cross-border connections can be expected to expand or contract.” —Douglas S. Massey, American Journal of Sociology
