Book excerpt: Anra is a solitary. She was born without the power to mindspeak, and unlike her fellows, she cannot communicate in unspoken thoughts. In the past, she would have been killed at birth, but the arrival of the Wanderer, the comet controlled by the cybernetic intelligence known as the Homesmind, has changed everything. The people of the comet, the skydwellers, now supply solitaries with implants that allow artificial mindspeaking. The solitaries are sequestered in a single village that is willing to care for such children. Anra and her new brethren were thought to be the possible bridge between the people of Earth and the skydwellers, but the gap may be too great, since the people of Earth consider solitaries an abomination and the skydwellers as soulless. The solitaries are, instead, outcasts in two worlds, part of each but fully accepted in neither. Another comet enters the system, refusing to communicate with Homesmind and speaking to the people of Earth with the voices of their own dead, seducing them into a submission of their individual wills and trying to lure them to oblivion. Anra and her fellow solitaries have the power to resist their call, but can they unite in time to save everyone else?

Book excerpt: This volume examines a variety of utopian writing for children from the 18th century to the present day, defining and exploring this new genre in the field of children's literature. The original essays discuss thematic conventions and present detailed case studies of individual works. All address the pedagogical implications of work that challenges children to grapple with questions of perfect or wildly imperfect social organizations and their own autonomy. The book includes interviews with creative writers and the first bibliography of utopian fiction for children.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The adventures of three brave young heroines in a telepathic dystopia, from the Nebula Award–winning author and “one of the genre’s best writers” (The Washington Post). In Pamela Sargent’s fascinating vision of a far-future, post-technological agrarian society, Earthfolk communicate with each other telepathically, can heal themselves, and fly at will, all by using their mindpowers. But those born without psychic ability—solitaries—must be euthanized to preserve the harmony of the society. This is the way of the world—until the appearance of a mysterious comet in the sky. Watchstar: The time has come. Daiya has turned fourteen and must now survive a rite of passage in the desert in order to join the Net—the telepathic web of the villagers’ minds. During this ordeal, she encounters a young man who has come down in a shuttle from a comet with startling news: His people are descended from those who fled Earth thousands of years ago. He is also a solitary. Now everything Daiya has accepted at face value is about to be challenged . . . Eye of the Comet: Young Lydee has always known this strange but wonderful comet-world to be Home. Like all skydwellers, she is linked through an implant to an omnipresent cybernetic intelligence known as the Homesmind, which guides the fate of her world and the people in it. Now she has a special task to perform, for she may be the only one who can be a bridge between her comet Home and her species’ native Earth. Homesmind: Anra, niece of Daiya, is a solitary, born without the power to mindspeak. Once, she would have been killed at birth. But now the skydwellers of the Wanderer, the comet controlled by Homesmind, supply solitaries with implants that allow artificial mindspeaking. The people of Earth still consider solitaries an abomination and skydwellers soulless—making Anra and her brethren outcasts in two worlds. But when another comet enters the system, speaking directly to the Earthfolk, seducing them to oblivion, only Anra and her fellow solitaries have the power to resist the call and attempt to save their people.

Book excerpt: This book offers a first step toward spanning the gap between the writing of male critics of speculative fiction, who do not devote enough attention to the contributions of new female voices to this genre, and feminist critics, who should study a genre that opens all possibilities to women. Although Barr clarifies speculative texts for those who may not be familiar with them, her study is neither a complete survey of speculative fiction nor an introduction to the recent concerns of feminist theory; it applies contemporary feminist theory to contemporary speculative fiction.

Book excerpt: Works of science fiction and fantasy increasingly explore gender issues, feature women as central characters, and are written by women writers. This book examines women's contributions to science fiction and fantasy across a range of media and genres, such as fiction, nonfiction, film, television, art, comics, graphic novels, and music. The first volume offers survey essays on major topics, such as sexual identities, fandom, women's writing groups, and feminist spirituality; the second provides alphabetically arranged entries on more specific subjects, such as Hindu mythology, Toni Morrison, magical realism, and Margaret Atwood. Entries are written by expert contributors and cite works for further reading, and the set closes with a selected, general bibliography. Students and general readers love science fiction and fantasy. And science fiction and fantasy works increasingly explore gender issues, feature women as central characters, and are written by women writers. Older works demonstrate attitudes toward women in times past, while more recent works grapple with contemporary social issues. This book helps students use science fiction and fantasy to understand the contributions of women writers, the representation of women in the media, and the experiences of women in society.

Book excerpt: A comprehensive guide to the speculative sub-genre of alternate history fiction, this book maps the unique terrain of this vibrant mode of storytelling and then explains how to write it. First giving a concise conceptual overview and the critical tools to differentiate the different forms of counterfactual fiction, Jack Dann lays out the 'tricks of the trade' such 'Heinleining', how to create recognizable 'divergent points' and how to employ paratextual elements and 'layering' to overcome readers' unfamiliarity with invented counterfactual events and cultures. Alongside this, Dann takes you step-by-step through a complete short story to demonstrate, line-by-line, how alternative history fiction works. As well as Dann's exacting methodology for writing professional quality alternate history stories, this book also features a live-on-the-page Q&A with some of the most esteemed alternate history writers working today, including Kim Stanley Robinson, John Birmingham and Lisa Goldstein among many others, who will detail their own particular hacks, theories, processes, methods and strategies. Combining extensive and deep knowledge of the field with accessible writing advice, this is the ultimate guidebook to the broad and complex sub-genre of counterfactual and alterative history fiction.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pamela Sargent's latest collection assembles 10 of her recent stories, including "Puss in D.C.," "Strawberry Birdies," and "A Smaller Government," showing why she's one of the most popular authors currently writing science fiction today. From the introduction by Eleanor Arnason: "Sargent has a quality usually associated with hard SF: a certain kind of intellectual rigor. With her, it carries through all of her work. She thinks things through. ... Notice, when you read this collection, how many different kinds of stories are here and notice the range of moods: the stories go from really funny to really dark, with a lot in between. ... I also want to mention Sargent's persistence. Writing is a hard life. Many good woman writers I admired in the 1970s, '80s and '90s have vanished. They stopped writing or stopped trying to sell their fiction or changed their names and moved to writing romance, gay romance, generic fantasy -- whatever they could sell. In one way or another, they were silenced. Sargent has kept doing thoughtful, serious fiction, dealing with the issues that interested her."

Book excerpt: This book provides a detailed study of the relationship between science fiction and other genres. After discussing the problems inherent in classifying works according to genre, Pierce notes how science fiction sometimes incorporates plots from other literary forms. He then explores the relationship between science fiction and related genres, such as fantastic romances and techno-thrillers. The book next examines those science fiction writers who have successfully written in other literary forms, as well as authors active in other genres who have turned to science fiction to treat particular themes. Pierce also discusses the literary and stylistic aspects of science fiction. Throughout the book, Pierce's coverage is encyclopedic in nature. He provides examples from numerous works, and the volume closes with a detailed bibliography.

Book excerpt: A novel of the thirteenth-century Mongolian warrior, and the women who surrounded him, that offers “a panoramic view of the charismatic leader” (Library Journal). In 1167, in the harsh homeland of Mongol tribes, a child was born who was to change the course of human history. His father named him Temujin, but the world knows him as Genghis Khan. Set amid the barbaric splendor of the Mongol hordes, Ruler of the Sky tells the tale of the warrior who forged one of the greatest and most terrifying armies the world had ever seen, and conquered the world from Peking to Persia. Not only is this the story of Genghis Khan, it is also the story of those who were closest to him, especially the women who played such an important role in his life. From the windswept plains of Mongolia to the opulence of the Chinese court, Ruler of the Sky is unforgettable.
