Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Home Mechanics for Amateurs A work of this character possesses equal merit with one entirely completed before the death of the author. As a rule such works have not had the ad vantage of the final perusal and correction by the author. Such has not, however, been the case in the present. Instance, for the following work by the late George M. Hopkins, was completed before his death. Tl ere is no doubt, however, that this volume will come as a surprise to thousands who have closely followed Mr. Hopkins' work, and who have enjoyed making the many experiments described by him. The present volume contains much matter which has never before appeared in print, and some articles which have al ready been published in the Scientific American. The object of the work is to furnish food for thought to the amateur, and to give him suggestions whereby he may pass many pleasant hours in his work-shop. Mr. Hop kins was an expert mechanic. One of his chief pleas ures was to make experiments at'his home in his well equipped work-shop and laboratory, and the work described in the present volume is nearly all the result of experiments made by him during such idle hours. It has been the intent of the author to make the present. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Home Mechanic: A Manual for Industrial Schools and Amateurs This state of things is his misfortune, because he has no friend to teach him how to do without all these things which at first appear to him to be so absolutely necessary, and which, he is told at the shop, after he has bought his lathe, are essential. If he had the good fortune to have a friend who could teach him, he would begin by making his own lathe, and then proceed to make the tools he requires; this sounds. Rather difficult, and, to many, it may appear quite impossible, but it is by no means so; in many countries turners make their own lathes, which. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Amateur Mechanic I might qualify the above statement by saying that if you are an amateur it will pay you to scan the following pages before you try to do mechanical things. The idea I have tried to carry out is to parallel the case of the locomotive engineer. You know, of course, that he did not build the engine he drives but he knows every part of it, exactly how it works, how to run it to get the most power, or speed, or both, out of it with the highest fuel economy and, further, if he should have a breakdown on the road he knows just how to make whatever repairs are needed to go on with his run. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Spons' Mechanics' Own Book: A Manuel for Handicraftsmen and Amateurs The title of this work almost suffices to indicate the character of the con tents, without the aid of any prefatory explanation. The authors have no new theories to advance, nor discoveries to relate: their aim has been rather to discuss from an everyday practical view the various mechanical trades that deal with the conversion of wood, metals, and stone into useful objects. The method of treatment of each branch is scientific, yet simple. First in order comes the raw material worked upon, its characters, variations, and suitability. Then the tools used in working up the material are examined as to the principles on which their shape and manipulation are based, including the means adopted for keeping them in order, by grinding, tempering, filing, setting, handling, and cleaning. A third section, where necessary, is devoted to explaining and illustrating typical examples of the work to be executed in the particular material under notice. Thus the book forms a complete guide to all the ordinary mechanical operations; and whilst professional workmen will find in it many suggestions as to the direction in which improvements should be aimed at, amateur readers will be glad to avail themselves of the simple directions and ingenious devices by which they can in a great degree overcome the disadvantage of a lack of manipulative skill. To render the book still more useful to the emigrant and colonist, who often has only his own wits to depend on in building and repairing his home, several further chapters have been added, dealing with the enclosure, approaches, water supply, drainage, warming, lighting, and ventilation of a dwelling. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gregory's Classical Mechanics is a major new textbook for undergraduates in mathematics and physics. It is a thorough, self-contained and highly readable account of a subject many students find difficult. The author's clear and systematic style promotes a good understanding of the subject: each concept is motivated and illustrated by worked examples, while problem sets provide plenty of practice for understanding and technique. Computer assisted problems, some suitable for projects, are also included. The book is structured to make learning the subject easy; there is a natural progression from core topics to more advanced ones and hard topics are treated with particular care. A theme of the book is the importance of conservation principles. These appear first in vectorial mechanics where they are proved and applied to problem solving. They reappear in analytical mechanics, where they are shown to be related to symmetries of the Lagrangian, culminating in Noether's theorem.
