It was received with so great favor, and made so many warm friends among boys and girls, that it is now offered in a form that is better adapted for the home. It has been revised for this purpose, so far as revision seemed desirable, and a number of new pictures have been added. The pictures in the book have been carefully selected by the well-known traveler and lecturer, Mr. Burton Holmes. They are, for the most part, those that have been taken by him during his travels. The material of which the stories and descriptions are made has been taken freely from the writings of those who have lived in the places referred to or of those who have visited the places in their travels. Acknowledgment is made to Messrs. Frederick A. Stokes & Co. for the use of extracts from Admiral Peary's "The North Pole"; to Mesare. G. P. Putnam's Sons for the use of Swiss poems from Alfred T. Story's "Swiss Life in Town and Country"; to Messrs. Charles Scribner's Sons for the use of extracts from George W. Cable's "Bonaventure"; and to the American Museum of Natural History for furnishing a number of pictures and the four photographs of the relief globe.
