Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: _______________ 'Ideal for those who like their recipes to come with a back story ... The book is tremendously funny, and her cooking was way ahead of her time' - Sally Hughes, BBC Good Food Magazine 'Hilarious' - English Home _______________ Recently, Elizabeth Gilbert unpacked some boxes of family books that had been sitting in her mother's attic for decades. Among the old, dusty hardbacks was a book called At Home on the Range, written by her great-grandmother, Margaret Yardley Potter. As Gilbert writes in her Foreword: 'I jumped up and dashed through the house to find my husband, so I could read parts of it to him: Listen to this! The humor! The insight! The sophistication! Then I followed him around the kitchen while he was making our dinner (lamb shanks), and I continued reading aloud as we ate... By the end of the night there were three of us sitting at that table. Gima had come to join us, and she was wonderful, and I was in love.' The cookbook was far ahead of its time. In it, Potter espouses the importance of farmer's markets and ethnic food (Italian, Jewish and German), derides preservatives and culinary shortcuts and generally celebrates a devotion to epicurean adventures. Potter takes car trips out to Pennsylvania Dutch country to eat pickled pork products, and to the eastern shore of Maryland, where she learns to catch and prepare eels so delicious, she says, they must be 'devoured in a silence almost devout'. Part scholar and part crusader for a more open food conversation than currently existed, it's not hard to see where Elizabeth Gilbert inherited both her love of food and her warm, infectious prose. At Home on the Range is a fascinating, humorous and useful cookbook from the past that is essential for the present day.

Book Synopsis Mechanistic Home Range Analysis. (MPB-43) by : Paul R. Moorcroft
Download or read book Mechanistic Home Range Analysis. (MPB-43) written by Paul R. Moorcroft and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2013-10-31 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spatial patterns of movement are fundamental to the ecology of animal populations, influencing their social organization, mating systems, demography, and the spatial distribution of prey and competitors. However, our ability to understand the causes and consequences of animal home range patterns has been limited by the descriptive nature of the statistical models used to analyze them. In Mechanistic Home Range Analysis, Paul Moorcroft and Mark Lewis develop a radically new framework for studying animal home range patterns based on the analysis of correlated random work models for individual movement behavior. They use this framework to develop a series of mechanistic home range models for carnivore populations. The authors' analysis illustrates how, in contrast to traditional statistical home range models that merely describe pattern, mechanistic home range models can be used to discover the underlying ecological determinants of home range patterns observed in populations, make accurate predictions about how spatial distributions of home ranges will change following environmental or demographic disturbance, and analyze the functional significance of the movement strategies of individuals that give rise to observed patterns of space use. By providing researchers and graduate students of ecology and wildlife biology with a more illuminating way to analyze animal movement, Mechanistic Home Range Analysis will be an indispensable reference for years to come.
Download or read book Sheepwagon written by Nancy Weidel and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Sheepwagon": A Home on wheels with an intriguing history, designed to house a sheepherder as he follows his flocks across the grasslands and mountains. A marvel of practicality and efficiency. But on a rare occasion, as I zoom down a highway, I spot the white top of a sheepwagon -- a lonely sentinel on the endless horizon -- and it fills my imagination. This photo-intensive book gives the history of the sheepwagon and the surrounding sheep business. Here are chapters on the early days of Western sheep-raising; the origins and manufacturing of sheepwagons; traditional sheepherders: their superstitions, customs and pastimes; women and families who lived in sheepwagons; the Basque influence; and modern-day herders, sheepwagons, and restorers. Author Weidel spent years interviewing sheepmen and women, sheepherders, wagon builders, and experts for this, the only book on the fascinating "first mobile home." The oblong book format complements the many photographs, most never before published.

Book Synopsis Home on the Range, Montana's Eastside Ranger Stations by : Vicky MacLean
Download or read book Home on the Range, Montana's Eastside Ranger Stations written by Vicky MacLean and published by . This book was released on 2013-12-19 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history of Montana's ranger stations spans most of the 20th century. From small isolated cabins to larger facilities with residences, bunkhouses, cookhouses and offices these were the Forest Service's bases of operation. As the work of the Forest Service expanded in location and complexity, ranger stations were developed to meet the needs of the workforce. Sometimes off the beaten path and sometimes an integral part of rural communities these facilities are a part of Montana's heritage. Some are long gone, some forgotten, and others are still in use. Their architecture is functional and mostly rustic. Many Forest Service retirees worked at these remote locations with out running water, electricity or regular mail service. This book will hopefully provide a bit of history about Montana's ranger stations and the people who lived and worked there.
