OVERVIEW As people age, they face special concerns regarding their oral health. The elderly are more susceptible to cavities and other oral diseases due to inadequate oral hygiene, infrequent dental examinations and cleanings, dry mouth, and problems with dentures. In addition, many elderly people grew up without the benefit of water fluoridation and other fluoride products. Being disabled, homebound, or institutionalized increases the risk of poor oral health. Finally, diseases commonly found in elderly Americans, such as diabetes and stroke, can contribute to poor oral health. It is often the aide's duty to perform oral hygiene, and reinforce proper hygiene practices for home health patients. It is essential to have an understanding of what good oral hygiene is and why it is important. This aide in-service reviews common oral diseases, special considerations for oral hygiene in the elderly, and proper oral hygiene techniques. It also outlines the aide's role in providing quality oral hygiene.

The consequences of these disparities in access to oral health care can lead to a number of conditions including malnutrition, childhood speech problems, infections, diabetes, heart disease, and premature births. Improving Access to Oral Health Care for Vulnerable and Underserved Populations examines the scope and consequences of inadequate access to oral health services in the United States and recommends ways to combat the economic, structural, geographic, and cultural factors that prevent access to regular, quality care. The report suggests changing funding and reimbursement for dental care; expanding the oral health work force by training doctors, nurses, and other nondental professionals to recognize risk for oral diseases; and revamping regulatory, educational, and administrative practices.
