Download or read book Boom Town written by Marjorie Rosen and published by Chicago Review Press. This book was released on 2009-10 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Investigating the personal stories behind the headquarters of the Wal-Mart empire, this examination focuses on the growth of Bentonville, Arkansas--a microcosm of America's social, political, and cultural shift. Numerous personalities are interviewed, including a multimillionaire Palestinian refugee who arrived penniless and is now dedicated to building a synagogue, a Mexican mother of three who was fired after injuring herself on the job, a black executive hired to diversify Wal-Mart whose arrival coincided with a KKK rally, and a Hindu father concerned about interracial dating. In documenting these citizens' stories, this account reveals the challenges and issues facing those who compose this and other "boom towns"--where demographics, the economy, and immigration and migration patterns are continually in flux. In shedding light on these important and timely anecdotes of America's changing rural and suburban landscape, this exploration provides an entertaining and intimate chronicle of the different ethnicities, races, and religions as well as their ongoing struggles to adapt. Emerging as subtle sociology combined with drama and humanity, this overview illustrates the imperceptible and occasionally unpredictable movements that affect the nonmetropolitan environment of the United States.

Book Synopsis Bentonville Before Wal-mart by : Michael McFarland Knott
Download or read book Bentonville Before Wal-mart written by Michael McFarland Knott and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2013-09-26 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Three thousand people lived in Bentonville, Arkansas in the 1950s, long before it became identified with the largest corporation in the world. Sam and Helen Walton were just ordinary townsfolk operating a Five and Ten. The corner drugstore sold ice cream sundaes and shakes. And churchgoers prayed every Sunday for their boys to come home from Korea, although young Michael Knott didn't know where Korea was. In this engaging memoir, Michael looks back at a childhood far different from those experienced by most children today. He writes about being a curious little kid, wandering around his neighborhood and downtown Bentonville. He recalls a rich cast of characters with unique personalities, idiosyncrasies, and compelling stories to tell. It was the age before television, when people's lives developed in unscripted, less conformist ways. Rather than clicking a remote control, children imagined and explored their worlds. While not immune to life's tragedies, it was a simpler, less complicated time of relative innocence. Bentonville Before Wal-Mart is one man's record of rural, small town, 1950s America. Some of Michael's stories are mischievous or comical. Others are ironic and sad. But all possess warmth and charm, and a young boy's realization of lessons learned.

Download or read book Sentinels of History written by Mark K. Christ and published by University of Arkansas Press. This book was released on 2000-01-01 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sentinels of History was conceived of as a way to mark the turn of the millennium by the Arkansas Historic Preservation Program. This generously illustrated book contains thirty-nine essays, each of which showcases an important Arkansas site and is written by a noted authority. Also included is a location map for these sites and a full appendix providing location information, county by county, for the more than two thousand surviving properties in Arkansas (as of June 1999) that appear on the National Register. The essays are as wide-ranging as Roger Kennedy's placement of the Toltec Mounds at the time of Charlemagne, Donald Harington's sensitive look at the "bigeminal" architecture of the Wolf dogtrot cabin, and Neil Compton's egalitarian tribute to the Boxley Valley Historic District on the Buffalo National River. At least one current color photo of the site and one historic image are included with each essay. In addition, illustrations of the locations or structures listed in the appendix are scattered throughout sections. In all, Sentinels of History serves as a lavish inventory of historic properties in Arkansas at the end of the twentieth century.
