Book excerpt: Pilgrimage into God: A Study of John Main's Meditation-Oriented Spirituality is a comprehensive investigation of the heritage of the Benedictine monk John Main (1926 -1982). This founder of a worldwide movement for Christian meditation understands meditation as an intentional transcending of all mental processes. Contrary to popular opinion, which associates meditation uniquely with Eastern traditions, Main considers meditative practice to be essential and central to Christian faith. This study not only explores Main's views on practise, but also looks into his theology, his understanding of spiritual growth and the (ideal) contexts for achieving such growth. It does this by critically situating Main's spiritual teaching within the Christian tradition and exploring its relation to Charles Taylor's interpretation of the modern spiritual condition. This study also aims at exploring how Main's heritage may contribute to illuminating Christian spiritual life today.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Holy Wisdom: Or Directions for the Prayer of Contemplation, Extracted Out of More Than Forty Treatises If it is a duty to apply to holy books the practice which the Following of Christ bids us observe towards holy persons, 'not to dispute concerning the merits of the saints, as to who is more holy than another, or greater in the kingdom of heaven, ' it will not be right to give the preference to the work which we are now offering in a new form to the public, over the many spiritual books which have helped on souls in the way of perfection. But it will not be right either to give to other books a preference over this. Certainly Sancta Sophia has been of great service in instructing beginners, in guiding proficients, and in securing those that have arrived at some degree of perfection, in the way along which Almighty God has called and led souls that have been highly privileged; and the Holy Spirit, who breatheth where He will, has through the words of the Venerable Father Baker whispered to these souls, and has drawn them on to a closer and closer union with Himself. Book excerpt: The experience of the divine in India has three components, sight, performance, and sound. One in a trilogy of books that include Diana Eck's Darsan: Seeing the Divine in India, and Susan L. Schwartz's Rasa: Performing the Divine in India, Mantra presents an introduction to the use of sound -- mantra -- in the practice of Indian religion. Mantra -- in the form of prayers, rituals, and chants -- permeate the practice of Indian religion in both temple and home settings. This book investigates the power of mantra to transform consciousness. It examines the use and theory of mantra under various religious schools, such as the Patanjali sutras and tantra, and includes references to Hindu, Sikh, Sufi, Islam, and Buddhist traditions. This edition adds new sections on the use of sacred sound in Hindu and Sikh North American diaspora communities and on the North American non-Indian practice of yoga and mantra.
Book Synopsis Angels of Light? Sanctity and the Discernment of Spirits in the Early Modern Period by : Clare Copeland

This book was released on 2012-11-23 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light." (2 Corinthians 11:14) Paul's warning of false apostles and false righteousness struck a special chord in the period of the European Reformations. At no other time was the need for the discernment of spirits felt as strongly as in this newly confessional age. More than ever, the ability to discern was a mark of holiness and failure the product of demonic temptation. The contributions to this volume chart individual responses to a problem at the heart of religious identity. They show that the problem of discernment was not solely a Catholic concern and was an issue for authors and artists as much as for prophets and visionaries.
