Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Holy Scripture and Modern Negations Testament. There the circle completes itself with the new heaven and the new earth wherein dwelleth right eousness. Now, here is a structure; here is the fact; here is a structure, a connected story, a unity of pur pose extending through this Book and binding all its parts together. Is that structure an illusion? Do we only - have men only - dreamed that is there? Do our eyes deceive us when we think we see it? Or has somebody of a later date invented it and put it all in - wrought it all in - these earlier records, legends and stories, or whatever you like to call it - skilfully woven it into the story until it presents there the ap pearance of naturalness and truth? I would like, friends, to find the mind capable of inventing it, and then the mind capable of putting it in and working it into a history once they got the idea itself. But if not invented, it belongs to the reality and the sub stance of the history; it belongs to the facts; and therefore to the Book that records the facts. And there is internal attestation in that structure of the Bible to the genuineness of its contents that pro tests against the efforts that are so often made to reduce it to fragments and shiver up that unity and turn it upside down. Walk about this Zion; tell the towers thereof; mark ye well its bulwarks; you will find there is something there which the art of man will not avail to overthrow. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Gnomon of the New Testament, Vol. 1 It is quite superfluous to write in praise of the Gnomon of Bengel. Ever since the year in which it was first published, A.D. 1742, up to the present time, it has been growing in estimation, and has been more and more widely circulated among the scholars of all countries. Though modern criticism has furnished many valuable additions to our materials for New Testament exegesis, yet, in some respects, Bengel stands out still "facile princeps" among all who have laboured, or who as yet labour, in that important field. He is unrivalled in felicitous brevity, combined with what seldom accompanies that excellence, namely, perspicuity. Terse, weighty, and suggestive, he often, as a modern writer observes," condenses more matter into a line, than can be extracted from pages of other writers." This condensation of style requires that the reader should have his attention always on the alert, and never presume that any remark is without point Bengel's parallel references to Scripture are never common-place and superficial, and ought to be in all cases looked for, as being often equivalent to an able and lengthened comment. His use of italics, for the most part, has relation to the ipsissima verba of the text or context. Deeply imbued with a holy reverence for all the Written Word, he employs quotations of it in a way which opens out to the diligent student new and rich mines of thought in the Sacred Volume. The notes are not to be read isolated from their connection: they form a continuous thread, guiding the earnest and prayerful reader through the pleasant pastures of the Word, and by the still waters of comfort. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Though the Bible presents a personal and relational God, popular modern worldviews portray an impersonal divine force in a purely material world. Readers influenced by this competing worldview hold assumptions about fundamental issues—like the nature of humanity, evil, and the purpose of life—that present profound obstacles to understanding the Bible. In Inerrancy and Worldview, Dr. Vern Poythress offers the first worldview-based defense of scriptural inerrancy, showing how worldview differences create or aggravate most perceived difficulties with the Bible. His positive case for biblical inerrancy implicitly critiques the worldview of theologians like Enns, Sparks, Allert, and McGowan. Poythress, who has researched and published in a variety of fields— including science, linguistics, and sociology—deals skillfully with the challenges presented in each of these disciplines. By directly addressing key examples in each field, Poythress shows that many difficulties can be resolved simply by exposing the influence of modern materialism. Inerrancy and Worldview's positive response to current attempts to abandon or redefine inerrancy will enable Christians to respond well to modern challenges by employing a worldview that allows the Bible to speak on its own terms.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New Version To their unsophisticated minds, this busi ness is seen in a far different light than by ambitious theologians desirous of increasing their income and glory by a place on the translators' staff. Hitherto, they have really believed the Bible from the first verse in Genesis to the last in Revelations. They supposed that God was the author. The idea that he had left the proof-reading to fallible man had never entered their heads. But now every one is familiar with the fact that there are thousands of different read ings that can only be settled by majority vote. They cannot but reflect that, if these men can change it today, other men may do so again to-morrow. On finding what were to them some of the sublime passages left out, they will naturally ask themselves, If man composed these, why may he not lie the author of it all? The Bible in many a house, regarded in the light of a fetich, will lose much of its sacred character when the revealing light of the new version falls on it. This new version will also set thousands of people to reading the Bible. The reason why many think so much of this book is because they never read it. They have imagined that all the good, true, and beautiful things the ministers find in it are really there. By reading it for themselves, they will discover the deception. I think that, if any one would read the Bible for the purpose of deciding the ques tion of its divinity, they would find a ver dict against it long before reaching the New Testament. The Catholic Church obeys the law of self-preservation by withholding the Bible from the laity. The Pope knows better than to countenance a new version. The friends of humanity can congratulate them selves that Protestantism likes the taste of the poison that will destroy it. I am sure No merely human mind could bear the strain Of some tremendous sorrows we endure. Art's most ingenious breastworks fail at length, Beat by the mighty billows of the sea; Only the God-formed shores possess the strength To stand before their onslaughts, and not flee. The structure that we build with careful toil, The tempest lays in ruins in an hour; While some grand tree that Springs forth from the soil IS bended but not broken by its power. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Catholic Student's "Aids" To the Study of the Bible, Vol. 2: The New Testament (the Gospels) Aids which the author has given us, and I feel sure that all who have read the first part - dealing with the Old Testa ment - will gi\e a cordial welcome to its successor. They already know the value of the help afforded by Father Pope's full knowledge of the Text of the Holy Scriptures, his firm grasp of the various modern difficulties regarding Holy Writ and his clear exposition of the truth of Catholic teaching. They thus know what to look for in the present volume, which deals with the Holy Gospels, and I con fidently predict that after reading it they will not be dis appointed. In these busy days some such work as this for the use of Catholic priests, teachers, 'and for Catholic readers generally is a real blessing. Few even of the clergy have the leisure or the Opportunity to study the many ques tions as to the Holy Bible, which are constantly appearing in various guises, and yet most of us feel that we ought to know what is the strength or weakness of this or that objection and be able to give some account of the faith that is in us. It's an auspicious title for such a humble man, yet no one can deny that the grasp Morris has on science and faith issues is staggering. In this updated classic, Morris walks the reader through history "real history" by showing the absurdity of evolution. From a wide variety of sciences, including astronomy, biology, chemistry, physics, and geology, Morris presents clear evidence that the Bible gives us an astonishingly accurate record of the past, present, and future.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Parchments of the Faith Some years ago the preparation of a volume entitled, The Story of the Manuscripts, met with the kind favor of the public, and proved the general interest in the documentary evidence for the text Of the New Testament, the theme of which it treated. That volume, I believe, was the first of the many that have been published seeking to give in a popular way the results of the special ist's labors in the textual department of biblical studies. In the meantime the discovery of many ancient documents and the progress of archaeo logical research, the appearance of the Canterbury Revision, the publication of Westcott and Hort's Greek New Testament, of Gregory's Prolegomena to Tischendorfs eighth edition, and of other im portant works, as well as great advances in the critical study of the Bible, have enhanced the public interest in the whole subject of the docu mentary sources of the sacred text. To meet a desire frequently expressed, this volume has been written, bringing the story down to the present time and treating of the entire Bible. This work is wholly independent Of the former book to which reference has been made, pursuing a differ ent plan and being independently written, and I do not know of any book that covers exactly the same ground. It would be impossible to mention in detail the multitude of works which have been consulted in the preparation of these pages, but in the most important instances they have been named in ap ended notes. I wish to acknowledge my in ebtedness to all published sources of informa tion which I have found accessible, and especially to the favor shown me by the great libraries which have given me access to original documents and valuable fac similar. The reproduction In this volume of whole pages of text in fac szmzze has been deemed a better method of illustration, than to present plates containing only a few lines of text of the original size. The reader by this method gets a better idea of the appearance of the original page, and while the exigencies of a modern book demand a great reduction in the size Of the fac sz'mz'le, the use of a lens will at once restore the text to its proper dimensions. Why is it that the last place one should go to study the Bible is a biblical studies program at virtually any university? Why are so many faithful priests and pastors, and the people in their pews, unaware of the centuries-long effort to turn the sacred Word of God into just another secular text? In The Decline and Fall of Sacred Scripture: How the Bible Became a Secular Book, authors Scott Hahn and Benjamin Wiker trace the various malformations of Scripture scholarship that have led to a devastating loss of trust in the inspired Word of God. From the Reformation to the Enlightenment and beyond, Hahn and Wiker sketch the revolutions and radical figures that led to the emergence of the historical-critical method and the pervasive ill effects that are still being felt today.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents critical studies of modern reconfigurations of conceptions of the past, of the 'classical', and of national heritage. Its scope is global (China, India, Egypt, Iran, Judaism, the Greco-Roman world) and inter-disciplinary (textual philology, history of art and architecture, philosophy, gardening). Its emphasis is on the complexity of the modernization process and of reactions to it: ideas and technologies travelled from India to Iran and from Japan to China, while reactions show tensions between museumization and the recreation of 'presence'. It challenges readers to rethink the assumptions of the disciplines in which they were trained
