Book Synopsis The Bohemian Flats by : Federal Writers Project
Download or read book The Bohemian Flats written by Federal Writers Project and published by Minnesota Historical Society Press. This book was released on 1986 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Bohemian Flats, first published in 1941, is a charming history of a small, isolated community that once lay on the west bank of the Mississippi River in Minneapolis, tucked underneath the Washington Avenue bridge. From the 1880s to the 1940s the village was home to generations of Swedish, Norwegian, Czech, Irish, Polish, and especially Slovak immigrants. This book's vivid descriptions of their traditions and adaptations offer an unusual insight into Minnesota's multi-ethnic heritage. The Bohemian Flats discusses the early years of settlement on the Flats, the lifeways and celebrations of the residents, and the razing of most of the neighborhood in 1932; it also provides recipes "From the Flats Kitchens." This edition contains a new section of pictures of the Flats and an introduction by ethnic historian Thaddeus Radzilowski, who describes the genesis of the book in the WPA and answers more questions about the identities of those who lived on the Bohemian Flats.

Book excerpt: This study investigated six hypotheses concerning the development of an ethnic community and intra-urban migration in Minneapolis from 1905 to 1945; (1) Although a Polish ethnic core area could be identified, provincial clustering was not sharply defined within that group. (2) The 'port of entry' function grew with the community and was not bound to the area of transient housing; (3) The length of first generation move was more closely related to the expansion of Minneapolis and its economy than to the length of time since arrival; (4) It cannot categorically be stated that second generation individuals are more mobile than first generation members. Important considerations are the definition of mobility used and the age structure of each generation; and (5) More Polish moves were explained by within-group information flows than by Adams' wedge-shaped mental map notion. Stability, not mobility, was the keynote of Polish residential choice.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The perennial questions surrounding human identity and meaning have never before been so acute. How we define ourselves is crucial since it determines our conception of society, ethics, sexuality—in short, our very notion of the “good.” The traditional Christian teaching of “deification” powerfully addresses this theme by revealing the sacred dignity and purpose of all created life, and providing a comprehensive vision of reality that extends from the individual to the cosmos. Hans Urs von Balthasar is a valuable guide in elucidating the church’s teaching on this vital subject. Following the patristic tradition, he focuses his attention on Jesus Christ, whose kenotic descent in his incarnation and passion reveals both the loving character of God and the perfection of humanity. Christ is the “concrete analogy of being” who in his two natures as God and man unites heaven and earth. It is the Trinity, however, that brings to fruition the fullness of the meaning of theosis in Balthasar’s theology. The community of divine persons eternally deifies the cosmos by embracing and transforming it into the paradigm of all reality—the imago trinitatis—overcoming the distance between the created and uncreated while maintaining and honoring their difference.
