Holographic and photographic recordings were taken in a crossflow environment using various compositions of metallized propellants. The reconstructed holograms are used to provide data on the behavior of aluminum/aluminum oxide particulates in a steady state combustion environment as a function of the initial aluminum size cast into the propellant. High speed, high resolution motion pictures were taken to compare the cinematic data with that available from the holograms. (Author).

Book excerpt: This investigation continued the development of a method for obtaining high quality holograms of the combustion products from aluminized solid rocket motor propellants burned in a two-dimensional motor to provide a cross-flow environment. The use of glass side plates as a motor casing provided both a convenient construction technique and allowed good quality holograms to be obtained. At combustion pressures above 500 psia and propellant slab thicknesses greater than 0.080 inches, the timing of the laser pulse during the burn was found to be critical, since an extremely short time interval existed between the establishment of steady state slab burning and the generation of too much smoke/combustion products to permit laser penetration. As desired operating pressures increase and aluminum powder particle sizes decrease, it will probably be necessary to use thinner propellant slabs. (Author).

Book excerpt: An investigation was conducted to determine the feasibility of obtaining holographic recordings of particulate behavior during the combustion process of solid propellant in a three-dimensional, windowed rocket motor. Transmittance measurements through the combustion chamber were made in order to select the appropriate neutral density filters which would yield the proper scene beam to reference beam intensity ratio. Holographic recordings were successfully made at combustion chamber pressures up to 185 psia using an HTPB-AP propellant containing 2.0 percent aluminum and 0.25 percent Fe203. The laser had to be fired manually because of the unreliability of the current igniter/grain design. For high combustion pressures, it is recommended that the laser beam power density be increased to penetrate the more opaque combustion products. Also, it is strongly recommended that a remote controlled laser firing device be used to improve the timing sequence for the hologram.

Book excerpt: An experimental investigation was performed to determine the feasibility of obtaining particle size data using pulsed-ruby holography in a three-dimensional metallized solid propellant rocket motor. Holograms of a USAF Resolution Target and a LEOS dot target were taken under various conditions, with the system resolution determined to be under 5 microns. Good quality holograms were obtained at pressures of 91, 110, and 280 psi using an HTPB/ammonium perchlorate propellant with 2 percent, 20 micron aluminum. Holograms were not successful at a pressure of 240 psi and 560 psi with a 2 percent aluminized AP/GAP propellant. For this propellant, transmittance tests indicated complete opacity during the steady-state portion of the burn.

Book excerpt: A test area was modified to allow holographic recordings to be made of burning solid propellant samples as contained in a pressurized window bomb. A holographic reconstruction area was also established. An attempt was made to develop a semi-automated holographic data retrieval (HDR) system using existing AFRPL hardware. The purpose of the HDR system was to retrieve particle size and positions information in a timely manner from holographic reconstructions of the propellant combustion. Experiments with the HDR system revealed serious deficiencies in the areas of resolution and particle recognition. Since a primary goal of the program was to establish particle distribution correlations from holographically derived particle information, the present program has been inactivated pending the development and acquisition of an improved HDR system.

Book excerpt: This thesis research was conducted as part of a continuing project at the Naval Postgraduate School which is investigating the effects of the addition of solid particulates to solid rocket propellant to enhance the performance characteristics. In order to correctly assess the effects of the particles, an accurate measurement of the sizes and quantities of the burning solid particles must be made with relation to their axial position within the port of the propellant grain. This thesis concerns itself only with the use of holograms of the burning propellant in a cross flow section of the combustion chamber. It describes a method of computer-controlled image enhancement and particle data retrieval from combustion hologram filtering and processing of the hologram images, and then describes a from the modified image. The ImageAction software and the Fortran program included that indicate that this method is capable of obtaining the desired particle feature information from the hologram image. Certain limitations of the system are discussed as are possible solutions to these limitations.

Book excerpt: An investigation has been conducted to develop techniques for obtaining quantitative data that can be used to relate solid rocket propellant composition and operating environment to the behavior of solid particulates within the grain port and exhaust nozzle. The techniques employed are high speed motion pictures of propellant strand burners and slab burners in a cross-flow environment, SEM analysis of post-fire residue (strand, slab, and motor), determination of D32 across the exhaust nozzle using measurements of scattered laser light, and holograms of burning propellant strands, slabs, and motors. In addition, techniques are being developed for automatic retrieval of particular size distributions from holograms taken of the combustion of solid propellants. Results are presented on (1) the measurement of particular size changes across an exhaust nozzle, (2) holograms obtained at the nozzle entrance, and (3) automatic data retrieval from holograms. Book excerpt: The feasibility of holographically (three-dimensionally) recording particulate generated by the combustion of small (1/4 by 1/8 by 1/16 inch) solid rocket propellant samples at high pressures (1000 psi) was demonstrated. A new lens-assisted holographic technique gave 3 micron resolution of particles in the combustion environment. Laser pulses of less than or equal to 10 nanoseconds were needed to avoid holographic fringe effects with metallized propellants. Reflected light holograms were also recorded of both particulate and burning propellant. A double exposure-double reference beam lens-assisted technique was used to record the particle field at two different times. The two recordings could be separately reconstructed. These records gave particle velocities. Equipment (a double reference beam-lens-assisted holocamera and modified pulsed ruby laser illuminator) was built and delivered to the Air Force Rocket Propulsion Laboratory for their own in-house program.
