Book Synopsis Love Letters from Golok by : Holly Gayley
Download or read book Love Letters from Golok written by Holly Gayley and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2016-12-06 with total page 415 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Love Letters from Golok chronicles the courtship between two Buddhist tantric masters, Tāre Lhamo (1938–2002) and Namtrul Rinpoche (1944–2011), and their passion for reinvigorating Buddhism in eastern Tibet during the post-Mao era. In fifty-six letters exchanged from 1978 to 1980, Tāre Lhamo and Namtrul Rinpoche envisioned a shared destiny to "heal the damage" done to Buddhism during the years leading up to and including the Cultural Revolution. Holly Gayley retrieves the personal and prophetic dimensions of their courtship and its consummation in a twenty-year religious career that informs issues of gender and agency in Buddhism, cultural preservation among Tibetan communities, and alternative histories for minorities in China. The correspondence between Tare Lhamo and Namtrul Rinpoche is the first collection of "love letters" to come to light in Tibetan literature. Blending tantric imagery with poetic and folk song styles, their letters have a fresh vernacular tone comparable to the love songs of the Sixth Dalai Lama, but with an eastern Tibetan flavor. Gayley reads these letters against hagiographic writings about the couple, supplemented by field research, to illuminate representational strategies that serve to narrate cultural trauma in a redemptive key, quite unlike Chinese scar literature or the testimonials of exile Tibetans. With special attention to Tare Lhamo's role as a tantric heroine and her hagiographic fusion with Namtrul Rinpoche, Gayley vividly shows how Buddhist masters have adapted Tibetan literary genres to share private intimacies and address contemporary social concerns.

You've always had the latest Hillsong album on your phone. But all of this is just jaded responses to your religion. Church girl, it's time to wake up. It's time for you to realize your potential and allow yourself to be taught and equipped now instead of waiting until your today becomes a distant memory. These letters will challenge you to search for things that need to change and inspire you to take these seemingly cliched lessons and allow them to truly impact your life - now. It's time for it to stick. Whether you are waiting on results of your ACT's or trying to get through varsity basketball, these letters are for you. If you are drowning in your freshman year of college or ready to face the career world, they're for you. Planning your wedding? Starting a family? Yes, even you. Even if you are pushing thirty and just feel like you've missed something. These letters are for you, too. With a down-to-earth spirit of authenticity, Holly vulnerably shares truths about topics such as forgiveness, identity in Christ, entitlement, and the role women should play in culture. Holly takes off the filtered lens of perfection and shares how the truth of Scripture transformed her own story in a real and exposing way. These letters were written to inspire young women now, before they are entangled deep in the weeds of adulthood.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Merriam Press World War 2 Biography. Like millions of young men, Robert Holly went away to war and was lost, never to be found. This is the story of a young American airman whose life was tragically ended on June 20, 1944 when the B-24 Liberator of which he was a crew member, collided with another and crashed into the sea near Kiel, Germany. Staff Sgt. Holly was a tail gunner serving with the 389th Bomb Group, Eighth Air Force, based at Hethel, Norfolk, during World War II. Only the pilot and co-pilot survived the crash. All the remaining 8 crew members, including Robert, were killed in the crash, and are commemorated on the Wall of the Missing at the Cambridge American Cemetery, Madingley. This is the compelling story of his short life and tragic death as seen through his own eyes, and the eyes of others close to him, told through their letters, and detailed in numerous documents. This book is a memorial, not only to Holly, but to the millions of others who were killed and disappeared without a trace.
