Book excerpt: In this charming series of short stories from Victorian author nonpareil Charles Dickens, four pairs of lovebirds offer up a detailed account of their courtships. There's just one catch -- none of the besotted have yet reached the ripe old age of 10. Displaying his usual knack for uncannily accurate characterization, Dickens gives readers a glimpse into the triumphs and trials of schoolyard romance.

Book excerpt: THIS beginning-part is not made out of anybody's head, you know. It's real. You must believe thisbeginning-part more than what comes after, else you won't understand how what comes after cameto be written. You must believe it all; but you must believe this most, please. I am the editor ofit. Bob Redforth (he's my cousin, and shaking the table on purpose) wanted to be the editor of it;but I said he shouldn't because he couldn't. He has no idea of being an editor.Nettie Ashford is my bride. We were married in the right-hand closet in the corner of the dancingschool, where first we met, with a ring (a green one) from Wilkingwater's toy-shop. I owed for itout of my pocket-money. When the rapturous ceremony was over, we all four went up the lane andlet off a cannon (brought loaded in Bob Redforth's waistcoat-pocket) to announce our nuptials. Itflew right up when it went off, and turned over. Next day, Lieut.-Col. Robin Redforth was united, with similar ceremonies, to Alice Rainbird. This time the cannon burst with a most terrificexplosion, and made a puppy bark.My peerless bride was, at the period of which we now treat, in captivity at MissGrimmer's. Drowvey and Grimmer is the partnership, and opinion is divided which is the greatestbeast. The lovely bride of the colonel was also immured in the dungeons of the sameestablishment. A vow was entered into, between the colonel and myself, that we would cut themout on the following Wednesday when walking two and two.Under the desperate circumstances of the case, the active brain of the colonel, combining with hislawless pursuit (he is a pirate), suggested an attack with fireworks. This, however, from motives ofhumanity, was abandoned as too expensive.Lightly armed with a paper-knife buttoned up under his jacket, and waving the dreaded black flag atthe end of a cane, the colonel took command of me at two P.M. on the eventful and appointedday. He had drawn out the plan of attack on a piece of paper, which was rolled up round a hoopstick. He showed it to me. My position and my full-length portrait (but my real ears don't stick outhorizontal) was behind a corner lamp-post, with written orders to remain there till I should see MissDrowvey fall. The Drowvey who was to fall was the one in spectacles, not the one with the largelavender bonnet. At that signal I was to rush forth, seize my bride, and fight my way to thelane. There a junction would be effected between myself and the colonel; and putting our bridesbehind us, between ourselves and the palings, we were to conquer or die

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is impossible to overstate the importance of British novelist CHARLES DICKENS (1812-1870) not only to literature in the English language, but to Western civilization on the whole. He is arguably the first fiction writer to have become an international celebrity. He popularized episodic fiction and the cliffhanger, which had a profound influence on the development of film and television. He is entirely responsible for the popular image of Victorian London that still lingers today, and his characters-from Oliver Twist to Ebenezer Scrooge, from Miss Havisham to Uriah Heep-have become not merely iconic, but mythic. But it was his stirring portraits of ordinary people-not the upper classes or the aristocracy-and his fervent cries for social, moral, and legal justice for the working poor, and in particular for poor children, in the grim early decades of the Industrial Revolution that powerfully impacted social concerns well into the 20th century. Without Charles Dickens, we may never have seen the likes of Sherlock Holmes, Upton Sinclair, or even Bob Dylan. Here, in 30 beautiful volumes-complete with all the original illustrations-is every published word written by one of the most important writers ever. The essential collector's set will delight anyone who cherishes English literature...and who takes pleasure in constantly rediscovering its joys. This volume contains Dickens's unfinished novel The Mystery of Edwin Drood-six of the planned twelve installments were published in 1870, just before Dickens's death-as well as Master Humphrey's Clock (1840-41), the framing story for The Old Curiosity Shop and Barnaby Rudge; the detective tale "Hunted Down" (1859); the children's novella A Holiday Romance (1858); and the novella George Silverman's Explanation (1868).
