Download or read book Holy Moly written by Ben Rehder and published by Macmillan. This book was released on 2008-05-13 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When televangelist Peter Boothe decides to build a megachurch on the banks of the Pedernales River, he thinks his biggest problem will be a few unhappy neighbors. However, when backhoe operator Hollis Farley unearths a rare fossil on the construction site---a discovery that could lead to plenty of embarrassing Darwinian publicity---the cover-up begins. Soon, Farley is dead, shot in the back with an arrow, and Game Warden John Marlin is asked to help with the case. What he and the local deputies find is a suspect list of biblical proportions: Could it have been the bitter geology professor? The private fossil collector with a somewhat unusual fetish? The minister’s wife who takes the Commandments rather lightly? Or the geriatric environmentalist with a mean right hook? Nothing is sacred in Holy Moly, Rehder’s most laughable Blanco County satire yet, a twisted tale of greed, corruption, infidelity, and, yes, paleontology.

Book excerpt: Dr. Ohrenspan is no ordinary man. Bluntly put, he is something of a freak. His features resemble those of a Neanderthal; his body is hairy and his walk plodding. He has suffered a lifetime of unkind stares and ridicule. In short, his existence has been a quiet hell. But with an IQ of 200 he is also somewhat of a dichotomy. Ohrenspan's origin is a well-guarded secret. The fact that he is the result of genetic experiments performed by the infamous Nazi doctor Johannes Strengele, is known only to a few close confidants like Dr. Chipmonk and Colonel Hal Hilmer. Ever since his escape from Strengele's clandestine laboratories in the hinterland of Uruguay as a young lad, Ohrenspan has had an overwhelming urge to one day return and tear his evil maker limb from limb. That day has come. With the aid of Dr. Chipmonk, Ohrenspan has completed the construction of Aquaria, a sub-oceanic city state off the coast of South America. The two scientists populated Aquaria with their own creations, a new species of pseudo-humans, having both lungs and gills, which allows them to live in water, as well as on land. Ohrenspan's invasion of Strengele's stronghold with an Aquarian army is imminent. Nothing but Strengele's death at his own hairy hands will suffice. But even the best laid plans often run afoul of bizarre events. When he finally faces his nemesis, he is shocked to realize that he has come full circle with the monster buried deep within his genetic stew. Now, a hell of a different kind takes
Book Synopsis Speaking of Animals by : Robert Palmatier
Download or read book Speaking of Animals written by Robert Palmatier and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 1995-04-30 with total page 497 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No other nonhuman source has served as the basis for more metaphors than animals. Speaking of Animals is a dictionary of animal metaphors that are current in American English. It is comprehensive, historical, and metaphor-based. Each entry refers to the other dictionaries that catalog that same metaphor, and the dates of first appearance in writing are supplied, where possible, for both the metaphor and the name of the source. The main text is organized alphabetically by metaphor rather than by animal or animal behavior; all the metaphors are classified according to their animal source in a list at the end of the book. An animal metaphor is a word, phrase, or sentence that expresses a resemblance or similarity between someone or something and a particular animal or animal class. True metaphors are single words, such as the noun tiger, the verb hog, and the adjective chicken. Phrasal metaphors combine true metaphors with other words, such as blind tiger, hog the road, and chicken colonel. Other animal metaphors take the form of similes, such as like rats leaving a sinking ship and prickly as a hedgehog. Still others take the form of proverbs, such as Don't count your chickens before they hatch and Let sleeping dogs lie. The horse is the animal most frequently referred to in metaphors, followed closely by the dog. The Bible is the most prolific literary source of animal metaphors, followed closely by Shakespeare.

Book Synopsis Never Turn Your Back on an Angus Cow by : Dr. Jan Pol
Download or read book Never Turn Your Back on an Angus Cow written by Dr. Jan Pol and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The star of The Incredible Dr. Pol shares his amusing, and often poignant, tales from his four decades as a vet in rural Michigan. Dr. Jan Pol is not your typical veterinarian. Born and raised the Netherlands on a dairy farm, he is the star of Nat Geo Wild’s hit show The Incredible Dr. Pol and has been treating animals in rural Michigan since the 1970s. Dr. Pol’s more than 20,000 patients have ranged from white mice to 2600-pound horses and everything in between. From the time he was twelve years old and helped deliver a litter of piglets on his family’s farm to the incredible moments captured on his hit TV show, Dr. Pol has amassed a wealth of stories of what it’s like caring for this menagerie of animals. He shares his own story of growing up surrounded by animals, training to be a vet in the Netherlands, and moving to Michigan to open his first practice in a pre fab house. He has established himself as an empathetic yet no-nonsense vet who isn’t afraid to make the difficult decisions in order to do what’s best for his patients—and their hard-working owners. A sick pet can bring heartache, but a sick cow or horse could threaten the very livelihood of a farmer whose modest profits are dependent on healthy livestock. Reminiscent of the classic books of James Herriot, Never Turn Your Back on an Angus Cow is a charming, fascinating, and funny memoir that will delight animal lovers everywhere.
