Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Robert Dowling (1827-1886) holds a special place in the history of Australian art as its first locally trained artist. He is known for his portraits of Australian colonial society, genre, oriental and biblical subjects, and important mid-19th century paintings of Tasmanian and Victorian Aborigines. Born in England, he migrated with his family to Tasmania at the age of seven. Showing early talent, at the age of 24, Dowling became a professional portrait painter. In 1857 he sailed for England for formal studies in London. Between 1859 and 1882, Dowling exhibited works at the Royal Academy as well as sending paintings to Australia--the earliest expatriate to do so. This is the first publication dedicated to Dowling's work and is published in conjunction with a major retrospective. Significantly all his major Aboriginal subjects will be bought together for the first time as well as biblical and genre paintings never before publicly exhibited or published. Beautifully illustrated and designed, the book features over 60 works. It exposes the reader to a much neglected but extraordinary chapter in Australian art and offers new visual insights into interracial relations in colonial Australia.

It includes a biography, 1,550 catalogue records and 700 images of the estimated 3,000 works of art painted by Haughton Forrest"........[Members of The Forrest Project] compiled a web-based catalogue that included a history of Haughton Forrest and his family, an inventory of his paintings, with information on provenance and ownership, and a virtual 'gallery' of images of as many paintings as could be obtained. This pooling of energy, enthusiasm and expertise has achieved a great deal. It now finds monumental expression in this splendid book that will stimulate wider interest in Forrest and provide a solid foundation for further research and reappraisal of his work."Michael BennettProfessor of HistoryUniversity of Tasmania

Book excerpt: For the first time, Kate Ceberano, one of Australia's best-loved entertainers, shares her story. In her own unmistakeable voice, Kate Ceberano takes us on a very personal journey from her suburban childhood, her immersion in the Melbourne club scene of the eighties and her rise to stardom at the age of fourteen when she fronted the wildly popular funk band I'm Talking, to the life of a female performer and recording artist in London, Los Angeles and New York. With parallel careers as a pop and jazz singer and songwriter, Kate has received the highest awards in the Australian music industry including the ARIA for Best Female Artist. She has delighted audiences in Harry M. Miller's hugely successful Jesus Christ Superstar, won a legion of fans when she won Dancing with the Stars, and made a triumphant debut for Opera Australia in South Pacific. Now she reveals, for the first time, just what that was like. People have been talking about Kate Ceberano since she was a teenager: Hugh Jackman described her as having 'truly one of the great voices this country has produced'; for Rolling Stone she is 'pure, soulful and powerful'. Now Kate is talking for herself. Accompanied by never before seen photos.

Book excerpt: The Vision Splendid features the sketchbooks of 22 nineteenth-century artists, ranging from well-known professionals like Eugene von Gurard and John Glover to amateurs about whom little is known. These artists, engineers, surveyors, military men, solicitors, public servants and pastoralists all delighted in recording what they saw and then sharing it with family, friends and the wider public. The sketches reveal what colonial life in Australia was like at that time, both in the country and in the city, and the challenges the artists faced depicting landscapes that were so different from those in Europe.
