Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Worcester, Massachusetts It is true that local self-government, in a modified form, had been known both in Germany and England before the earliest colonization of America. But long before that colonization commenced the Crown had, by repeated encroachments, deprived the people of their ancient right of self-control, and that right or power had been vested in municipal councils or other local boards, and which were self-perpetuating bodies.3 But when removed from the presence of that domi nating power of the few over the many, the colonists at once returned to what has been called the natural order of society in the establishment of government. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Worcester Book: A Dairy of Noteworthy Events of Noteworthy Events in Worcester, Massachusetts, From 1657 to 1883 In the preparation of this volume my purpose has been to provide a Reference Book of Dates for Worcester events, which would readily afford often desired information as to the exact time of any noteworthy local occurrence. With this end in view, a large number of items have been gathered, including not only the more important matters which are familiar in print, but also many of a kind not usually noticed in town histories. Among the latter may be mentioned the visits of literary, theatrical and musical celebrities; political conventions, meetings and disturbances; exhibitions, fairs, lectures and entertainments; riots, accidents and calamities; natural phenomena; and many things uncommon and singular. Notes, explanatory, historical, biographical or anecdotal, have been added; and a complete index will be found at the end. In the compilation of the matter I have drawn freely from the many printed works relating to the history of Worcester, both general and special; from the files of the Worcester papers, (which I have been kindly allowed to consult at my convenience at the library of the American Antiquarian Society); from the publications of The Worcester Society of Antiquity, which have supplied many original items; and from other sources too numerous to mention. I am also indebted to many persons for facts and statements included in the book, some of which appear in print for the first time. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Old Worcester: Worcester, Massachusetts, About 1840; Fourth Paper in Continuation Dr. Thomas built a house, for those days an elegant man sion, on the ground where the New Court House now stands, the building containing his printing press standing just south of it, and here he passed the closing days of his life, dying in 1831, at the age of eighty-two years, the most distinguished citizen of Worcester. Dr. Thomas as well as Dr. Bancroft wore in the street long grey stockings, knee buckles, small-clothes and the capacious coat so fashionable among gentlemen in the beginning of the century, and he was one of the last to appear in the street in that costume. Judge and Mrs. Merrick had no children, but a niece of the latter, Miss Caroline Crocker, made her home with her aunt a part of the year, for the purpose of attending school in Worcester. Mrs. Merrick was a most estimable woman, and one much respected by her friends and acquaintances, and after her removal to Boston, her house was frequented by some of the most agreeable and noted people in the city, the legal element naturally predominating. This town, situated in the north-easterly part of the county of Worcester, forty miles by carriage-road and forty-six miles by the Fitchburg Railroad, and fifty-three miles by the Old Colony Railroad, from Boston, and twenty miles from Worcester, was formerly - a large share of it - a part of Lancaster; being substantially the northerly half of what was called the "Lancaster New" or "Additional Grant," a tract of land conveyed by George Tahanto, Sagamore of the Nashua tribe of Indians, to Insigne John Moore, John Houghton, and Nathaniel Wilder, dated June 13, 1701, and recorded in the Proprietors' Records, now deposited with the records of the town of Leominster, and confirmed to the town of Lancaster by an order of the General Court, passed Nov. 21 and 22, 1711. To this was afterwards added, by chapter 106 Acts of 1838, a part of the unincorporated laud lying westerly of the first tract, called "No Town." The first tract contained 16,602 acres, or thirty-eight acres less than twenty-six square miles, according to a survey made by Jonas Kendall, Charles Grout, Levi Nichols, David Wilder, and Joseph G. Kendall, as a committee of the town, in the year 1830; and the second, or "No Town" tract, about 2,000 acres, or a little over three square miles, making the present area about twenty-nine square miles. This territory is mostly quite regular in shape, and is bounded northerly by Fitchburg and Lunenburg; easterly, by Lunenburg and Lancaster; southerly, by Sterling; and westerly by Princeton and Westminster. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Dictionary of Worcester: Massachusetts and Its Vicinity The plan of the Dictionary of Worcester comprehends a handbook of general information, which, as a collection of useful references or a guide-book to the City and its surroundings, will serve equally the resident and the stranger. The scope of the work differs somewhat from that of the "Dictionaries" issued in other cities, in being more full in matters relating to the history and chronology of the subjects treated, and in containing much that is not usually included in books of a similar character. Many of the facts and figures given are not readily accessible in any other form, and are of more than common interest and value to the enquirer. Occasional mention by name in the text of trades-people, business houses and other establishments, was unavoidable, but in no instance is such mention a recommendation in the interest of the parties named. Advertisements appear in their proper places at the beginning and end of the book, and under no disguise.
