Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Wayne County Their homely joys, and destiny obscure Nor Grandeur hear with a disdainful smile, The short and simple annals of the poor. Judge Woodward regretted that he had not begun at an earlier day to collect materials for his history, which might have been obtained from the old settlers themselves. But those old settlers are now all gone, and but very few of their children survive. If their history is ever written it must be done soon. Already some of it is fragmentary and uncertain; but such as it is, I have concluded, after much hesitation, to pre sent what I have collected; not for fame, but as a tribute of respect to the people of my native county. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Landmarks of Wayne County, New York In presenting this historical and biographical record of Wayne county to its readers, the editor and his associates feel that no apology is demanded, either for the motives which first prompted the undertaking or for the accomplished results. While several more or less incomplete works treating upon the history of this locality have been published prior to the inception of this volume, it is true that the field has never 'been properly occupied. This fact was realized and appreciated by the representative people of the county, most of whom had long entertained the desire that a work worthy of the subject, and comprehensive and reasonably cor rect, might be published before many of the sources of information should become extinct. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Wayne County, Ohio: From the Days of the Pioneers and First Settlers to the Present Time While the relations of the different townships to the county-seat, or in fact to each other, are as the members to the body, and while the annals of all are interlaced, like the limbs of ancient wrestlers, the plan of tile work is such that each township will have its own separate and specific history. He indulges not the hope that he has prepared a perfect history, or a complete one in all particulars, but trusts he has presented the leading features of Wayne county. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Wayne County, Indiana, From Its First Settlement to the Present Time More than two years ago, I engaged to revise the manuscript of a history of Wayne county for publication. After several months' labor had been bestowed on the revision, the proprietor concluded to relinquish the enterprise. At the solicitation of a number of honorable gentlemen, who were desirous that a history of the county should be written, and who expressed the belief that this desire was general, I consented to undertake the publication on my own responsibility. But of the material in my hands, little related to any part of the county beyond the limits of Wayne township. Believing that nothing short of a regular and well-arranged history of every township would meet the general expectation, it was deemed necessary to alter the plan of the work, and to commence anew the collection of material. For this purpose, every township was visited in person, in order to avail myself of the most reliable sources of information. But in this work a serious difficulty was soon met. The statements of different persons were widely at variance. The confident assertions of some were contradicted by others; and important events were left in uncertainty. Hence it became necessary to visit many persons in different, and often distant parts of the township, to determine doubtful points. Nor was a single journey to every township sufficient. With a view to the nearest approach to accuracy, the county was traversed a number of times. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Using over two hundred historical photographs, Wayne Township offers a unique view of a town that has undergone great change in its lifetime. Wayne was traversed by Native Americans for thousands of years before Dutch businessmen and farmers settled there c. 1695. This book illustrates how Wayne's twenty-first-century landscape of busy retail centers, transportation highways, and residential neighborhoods was once a fertile, cultivated valley. The images in this book reveal Wayne's economic and cultural past, including the farmsteads, barns, gristmills, sawmills, blacksmith shops, and churches that made up the Wayne Township region years ago. Wayne Township provides clues to a past rich in history in the images of more than thirty existing historic structures and lost architectural treasures, and reveals legends, folk tales, ghost stories, and historical fact. The book tells many stories, including those of Arent Schuyler's exploration of the valley and George Washington's formulation of war-winning strategies at the Dey Mansion. It explores early industry in Wayne-the iron furnace at Pompton Falls, the brick manufacturing and powder works in Mountain View, and the arrival of the railroad in the area. Pictured are famous twentieth-century residents Albert Payson Terhune and his collies, Cecil B. DeMille, LeGrand Parish, and the horse Preakness.

Book excerpt: Known as the home of the Prohibition-era Shelton Brothers Gang, the true heritage of Wayne County, Illinois, is the collective life of its ordinary citizens--their surroundings, activities, and challenges. In 1819, settlers named the county seat Fairfield because there was "no fairer field" than the broad prairie between the timberlands. Villages scattered across the 715-square-mile county attracted families, teachers, doctors, blacksmiths, ministers, and merchandisers. The railroad brought prosperity. Fairfield's opera house, college, woolen mill, stately churches, elegant homes, and packed business district made it a social hub. In the 1900s, Sexton Manufacturing added a massive factory complex, including Cambridge Court cottages for unmarried female workers. On farms, poultry production reached industry levels. By the 1920s, the county had over 100 one-room schools. The discovery of oil in 1937 relieved Depression-era woes and fueled Fairfield's civic expansion after World War II. These photographs show generations of shopkeepers, students, farmers, musicians, builders, barbers, teachers, merchants, and factory workers in the heart of the rural Midwest.
