Book excerpt: Known as Beebe's Corners in the early 1800s, the city of Warren has grown to become the third-largest city in Michigan, surrounding Center Line--the city within the city. Warren's history has something for everyone. A pioneer burial ground was discovered on school property in the 1970s, and an old Norway spruce still points the way for a vanished tribe. In the 1920s, the Warren cooperative supplied goods to a growing community, and the first African American cemetery in the state was established as well. Warren's General Motors Tech Center was dubbed "the Versailles of Industry" in the mid-20th century; in addition to a worldwide radio broadcast, a crowd of 5,000 attended the dedication ceremony, including Pres. Dwight D. Eisenhower. The Chrysler tank arsenal helped to end World War II. World-renowned architects Eero Saarinen and Albert Kahn designed commercial and residential structures in Warren and Center Line. Places of worship represent all faiths, and a top-notch school system serves Warren--testaments to the culture of this community.
Book Synopsis Dancing My Dream by : Warren Petoskey
Download or read book Dancing My Dream written by Warren Petoskey and published by David Crumm Media. This book was released on 2017-02-02 with total page 163 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This memoir of Native American teacher, writer and artist Warren Petoskey spans centuries and lights up shadowy corners of American history with important memories of Indian culture and survival. Warren's family connects with many key episodes in Indian history, including the tragedy of boarding schools that imprisoned thousands of Indian children as well as the traumatic effects of alcohol abuse and bigotry. He writes honestly about the impact of these tragedies, and continually returns to Indian traditions as the deepest healing resources for native peoples. He writes about the wisdom that comes from practices such as fishing, hunting and sharing poetry. This memoir is an essential voice in the chorus of Indian leaders testifying to major chapters of American history largely missing from most narratives of our nation's past.

Book Synopsis Detroit's Lost Poletown by : Brianne Turczynski
Download or read book Detroit's Lost Poletown written by Brianne Turczynski and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2021-02-08 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poletown was a once vibrant, ethnically diverse neighborhood in Detroit. In its prime, it had a store on every corner. Its theaters, restaurants and schools thrived, and its churches catered to a multiplicity of denominations. In 1981, General Motors announced plans for a new plant in Detroit and pointed to the 465 acres of Poletown. Using the law of eminent domain with a quick-take clause, the city planned to relocate 4,200 residents within ten months and raze the neighborhood. With unprecedented defiance, the residents fought back in vain. In 2004, the Michigan Supreme Court ruled that the eminent domain law applied to Poletown was unconstitutional--a ruling that came two decades too late.
Download or read book The TARDEC Story written by Jean M. Dasch and published by Government Printing Office. This book was released on 2013-12-11 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Full of illustrations and photographs, this publication is a comprehensive history of the many innovations in tanks and other military ground vehicles and equipment developed by the engineers at TARDEC, the U.S. Army Tank Automotive Research, Development and Engineering Center. TARDEC was formed in 1946 as an outgrowth of the Detroit Arsenal Tank Plant built during World War II. During the early years, emphasis was placed on evolving new technologies to improve military ground vehicles, culminating in the development of the M1 Abrams tank. Since then, TARDEC has grown to be a key center for advanced technologies for military ground vehicles and equipment. Recent years have brought an explosion of technology development and integration, from hybrid engines to fuel cells, from analytical simulation to enormous physical simulators, and from small robots to entire unmanned vehicles.
