Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published in celebration of the Purchase's bicentennial, this resource offers a multifaceted view of a watershed American event. In one easy-access resource, The Louisiana Purchase brings together the work of over 100 experts covering historical figures, relevant legal and historical concepts, states that formed in the new territory, frontier outposts, and the Native Americans uprooted by expansion westward. The book examines every aspect and consequence of Thomas Jefferson's momentous transaction: the largest real estate deal in American history. Readers will learn how the purchase made Manifest Destiny really seem like destiny; how it sparked the rise of America's urban industrial society and inflamed passions over the expansion of slavery; and how it triggered tragic conflicts between the government and Native Americans as well as immeasurable environmental damage. Ideal for students, historians, and public and private libraries, the Encyclopedia is the most comprehensive reference ever compiled on an event so central to the American experience that it seems to lie at the heart of everything triumphant and tragic in our history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kathleen M. Byrd’s Natchitoches, Louisiana, 1803–1840 is an examination of one French Creole community as it transitioned from a fur-trading and agricultural settlement under the control of Spain to a critical American outpost on the Spanish/American frontier and finally to a commercial hub and jumping-off point for those heading west. Byrd focuses on historic events in the area and the long-term French Creole residents as they adapted to the American presence. She also examines the effect of the arrival of the Americans, with their Indian trading house and Indian agency, on Native groups and considers how members of the enslaved population took advantage of opportunities for escape presented by a new international border. Byrd shows how the arrival of Americans forever changed Natchitoches, transforming it from a sleepy frontier settlement into a regional commercial center and staging point for pioneers heading into Texas.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Oklahoma, the forty-sixth state admitted to the union, has a history much more interesting and extensive than its relatively recent statehood indicates. Roy Gittinger’s classic study begins in 1803, the year of the Louisiana Purchase, which brought the region into the United States and closes in 1906, when Indian Territory was poised to become the state of Oklahoma. The territory became the home of the Five “Civilized” Tribes—Cherokee, Chickasaw, Creek, Choctaw, and Seminole—in the years following the Indian Removal Act of 1830. Through treaties and Indian removals later in the century, lands were reserved to Plains Indian tribes—the Kiowa, Comanche, and Apache in the southwest; Cheyenne and Arapahoe in the west; Iowa, Kickapoo, Pottawatomie, and Shawnee in the central portion; Osage and other tribes in the north and east. The Panhandle was public land and the central region was the Oklahoma District, not open to settlement by whites or possessed by any Indian tribe. In 1889, the Oklahoma District was thrown open to settlement, and the “land run” allowed thousands of home seekers to settle a portion of the vast territory. It set the stage for subsequent openings, for a territorial government, and finally for Oklahoma statehood in 1907. The Formation of the State of Oklahoma gives a definitive account of the original Indian land grant, the treaties that settled tribes in Indian Territory, developments after the tribes settled, the problems raised by white settlement, and the dynamic events that led to the establishment of the commonwealth of Oklahoma.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a thoroughly revised edition of the Historical Atlas of Colorado, which was coauthored by Tom Noel and published in 1994. Chock-full of the best and latest information on Colorado, this new edition features thirty new chapters, updated text, more than 100 color maps and 100 color photos, and a best-of listing of Colorado authors and books, as well as a guide to hundreds of tourist attractions. Colorado received its name (Spanish for “red”) after much debate and many possibilities, including Idaho (an “Indian” name meaning “gem of the mountains” later discovered to be a fabrication) and Yampa (Ute for “bear”). Noel includes other little-known but significant facts about the state, from its status as first state in the Union to elect women to its legislature, to its controversial “highest state” designation, elevated by the 2013 legalization of recreational cannabis. Noel and cartographer Carol Zuber-Mallison map and describe Colorado’s spectacular geography and its fascinating past. The book’s eight parts survey natural Colorado, from rivers and mountains to dinosaurs and mammals; history, from prehistoric peoples to twenty-first-century Color-oddities; mining and manufacturing, from the gold rush to alternative energy sources; agriculture, including wineries and brewpubs; transportation, from stagecoach lines to light rail; modern Colorado, from the New Deal to the present (including politics, history, and information on lynchings, executions, and prisons); recreation, covering not only hiking and skiing but also literary locales and Colorado in the movies; and tourism, encompassing historic landmarks, museums, and even cemeteries. In short, this book has information—and surprises—that anyone interested in Colorado will relish.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the 1930s in the United States, the Works Progress Administration developed the Federal Writers’ Project to support writers and artists while making a national effort to document the country’s shared history and culture. The American Guide series consists of individual guides to each of the states. Little-known authors—many of whom would later become celebrated literary figures—were commissioned to write these important books. John Steinbeck, Saul Bellow, Zora Neale Hurston, and Ralph Ellison are among the more than 6,000 writers, editors, historians, and researchers who documented this celebration of local histories. Photographs, drawings, driving tours, detailed descriptions of towns, and rich cultural details exhibit each state’s unique flavor. The WPA Guide to Louisiana features a state influenced greatly by both Cajun and Southern cultures, as seen in the excellent photography and the chapter focused solely on traditional Louisiana cuisine. From Acadiana to the northern Sportsmans’ Paradise, this guide takes the reader on a journey across the swamplands of the Pelican State with several driving tours and special essays on the rich histories of Baton Rouge and New Orleans.

The emphasis is not on genealogy, but on the story of seven generations of a family, set in the historical and cultural context of their times.
