Download or read book Family Fortunes written by Leonore Davidoff and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-04-15 with total page 609 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Family Fortunes has become a seminal text in class and gender history. Published to wide critical acclaim in 1987, its influence in the field continues to be extensive. It has cast new light on the perception of middle-class society and gender relations between 1780 and 1850. This revised edition contains a substantial new introduction, placing the original survey in its historiographical context. Leonore Davidoff and Catherine Hall evaluate the readings their text has received and broaden their study by taking into account recent developments and shifts in the field. They apply current perceptions of history to their original project, and see new motives and meanings emerge that reinforce their argument.

Book Synopsis The Politics of Reproduction by : Katherine Paugh
Download or read book The Politics of Reproduction written by Katherine Paugh and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2017-04-21 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many British politicians, planters, and doctors attempted to exploit the fertility of Afro-Caribbean women's bodies in order to ensure the economic success of the British Empire during the age of abolition. Abolitionist reformers hoped that a homegrown labor force would end the need for the Atlantic slave trade. By establishing the ubiquity of visions of fertility and subsequent economic growth during this time, The Politics of Reproduction sheds fresh light on the oft-debated question of whether abolitionism was understood by contemporaries as economically beneficial to the plantation colonies. At the same time, Katherine Paugh makes novel assertions about the importance of Britain's Caribbean colonies in the emergence of population as a political problem. The need to manipulate the labor market on Caribbean plantations led to the creation of new governmental strategies for managing sex and childbearing, such as centralized nurseries, discouragement of extended breastfeeding, and financial incentives for childbearing, that have become commonplace in our modern world. While assessing the politics of reproduction in the British Empire and its Caribbean colonies in relationship to major political events such as the Haitian Revolution, the study also focuses in on the island of Barbados. The remarkable story of an enslaved midwife and her family illustrates how plantation management policies designed to promote fertility affected Afro-Caribbean women during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. The Politics of Reproduction draws on a wide variety of sources, including debates in the British Parliament and the Barbados House of Assembly, the records of Barbadian plantations, tracts about plantation management published by doctors and plantation owners, and missionary records related to the island of Barbados.
Download or read book Surveying Sisters written by Clara Greed and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-08-24 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past few years there had been a dramatic increase in the number of women entering the surveying profession. Fewer than five per cent of practising surveyors were women, but women comprised twenty per cent of students. Originally published in 1991, Surveying Sisters explores the question of whether ‘more’ would mean ‘better’, either for women surveyors themselves, or for women as consumers of the built environment. Clara Greed investigates the experiences of individual women surveyors, as well as studying the nature of the male majority. Taking a broadly feminist perspective and using an ethnographic approach, she develops a strong theoretical basis, incorporating the gender, class, and spatial dimensions of the situation, centring round the concept that surveying has its own distinct professional subculture. She traces the historical roots of the profession, and its attitudes to women, and makes constructive suggestions for improving the position of women surveying today. This was a highly topical study, at a time when the surveying profession was eager to attract more women in order to allay the effects of declining numbers of school leavers and potential ‘manpower’ shortages. It will be of interest to people concerned about issues of gender in disciplines such as sociology, management studies, higher education, urban geography, and women’s studies, and to the women and men who work in the surveying and other built environment professions.

Download or read book Bread Winner written by Emma Griffin and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2020-06-09 with total page 403 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The forgotten story of how ordinary families managed financially in the Victorian era--and struggled to survive despite increasing national prosperity "A powerful story of social realities, pressures, and the fracturing of traditional structures."--Ruth Goodman, Wall Street Journal "Deeply researched and sensitive."--Simon Heffer, Daily Telegraph, "Best History Books of 2020" Nineteenth century Britain saw remarkable economic growth and a rise in real wages. But not everyone shared in the nation's wealth. Unable to earn a sufficient income themselves, working-class women were reliant on the 'breadwinner wage' of their husbands. When income failed, or was denied or squandered by errant men, families could be plunged into desperate poverty from which there was no escape. Emma Griffin unlocks the homes of Victorian England to examine the lives - and finances - of the people who lived there. Drawing on over 600 working-class autobiographies, including more than 200 written by women, Bread Winner changes our understanding of daily life in Victorian Britain.

Book Synopsis This Day in American History by : Ernie Gross
Download or read book This Day in American History written by Ernie Gross and published by VNR AG. This book was released on 1990 with total page 494 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a meat-and-potatoes reference work, garnished only with a brief preface, a one-page bibliography, and an index. The text is organized by day of the month, listing in chronological order events that occurred in American history. This logical layout will make the book easy to use for librarians and patrons alike. Entries are written in a telegraphic, curt style that in some cases may require clarification. The 70-page index is useful but flawed, lacking comprehensiveness and containing some incorrect citations. The Encyclopedia of American Facts & Dates (HarperCollins, 1987. 8th ed.), while less current, is more thorough and better indexed, for less money. Recommended, with reservations, as a secondary source for public and school libraries.-- James Moffet, Baldwin P.L., Birmingham, Mich. - Library Journal.
